In 1879, a military court of inquiry was convened in Chicago to determine the issue of cowardice on the part of Major Reno. And a fascinating group of witnesses they were. Here is the testimony of the gentlemanly, sardonic Captain Frederick Benteen, international man of intrigue Charles DeRudio, heroic young Dr. Henry Porter, future-General Edward Godfrey, the trumpeter John Martin, interpreter Fred Gerard and 17 others, including Reno himself.
In graphic detail, the survivors recount their disastrous rout in the Valley fight at the hands of hundreds of Sioux warriors, their disorganized retreat to the bluffs, and their bewilderment at what they believed had been their abandonment by General George Armstrong Custer. They spent two days under a withering hailstorm of gunfire from thousands of Sioux and Cheyenne, led by Crazy Horse, Gall, Sitting Bull, and others.
When they found out two days later that Custer and over 200 of his men were dead, they could not believe it. Before leaving the battlefield, they had to bury their comrades and attempt to identify mutilated officers.

Primary Source Material or Whitewash? Seekers of the Truth or Custer Groupies? Read On!

Abstracts of the proceedings are more readable, omitting all but the 'details' of the inquiry. But considering that this has been primary source material for over a century, the complete version is a must for anybody serious about the event in question. There are few hidden or deep revelations here, and one can almost feel the intense boredom of the court manfully plowing away at the same questions and usually getting the same answers. Suddenly, you get a revelation out of the blue, and it has your full attention! I know that a lot of modern scholars say that this source is tainted, that the officers involved colluded to save their skins at the expense of Custers.
Disregarding the time lapse of several years, and the fact that two officers were not present- Weir dead, French insensible from binge drinking- notice how many surviving officers drank themselves into oblivion or discharge? No such thing as PSTD then. You drank to forget and climbed back on your horse. And there was some rank closing among the officers. It is speculated it was to cover up gross errors, and even conspiracy. Even the court Recorder noted there was a feeling of solidarity that couldn't be pierced. Today we can talk about things such as survivors' guilt and other symptoms but they were considered a cowards or a weaklings way of avoid duty. So they drank and saw the entire event through too much time, guilt and downright hostility that they were being brought to account because they managed to hold the Sioux at bay while Custer failed to do so.
There is much that is blatantly 'spin' here, mostly from Reno. He has changed his story from his initial report quite a bit, and his counsel, a Mr. Gilbert, was pretty harsh with the outsiders of the group- the packers, scouts and interpreters. Even Dr. Porter got a little rough treatment. Some officers seemed to pull an Ollie North, but at the time the fight ocured things that the inquiry most wanted to know were not important, and nobody can be everywhere to see or hear everything. All participants had different views, and this is normal for all circumstances, let alone a traumatic event 3 years in the past that has been speculated on to the point where what you experienced collided with what you actually perceived during the event. Still, there is some obstruction going on, and you can sense that the survivors, particularly the officers, are getting very defensive. And if that means defending Reno- or, as Benteen said later, he shielded him because "there were a whole lot of harpies after him." By his own admission, Benteen withheld things simply because he wasn't asked. Some see this as conspiracy. I see it as feeling a very pronounced 'us vs. them' quality. Remember, the officers in charge of the inquiry were officers, and although I have no doubt they would have ruled against Reno if there was sufficient evidence but there just wasn't.
What do I think of the whole affair? Letters and reports written while the 7th was still in the field are more revealing because, as Godfrey said about Benteen's letters to his wife mere days after the fight, there was no controversy and people said what they really thought. Reno thought that he was facing the entire Sioux nation on his own with no support- at least, none coming soon enough for him. His retreat to the hills was probably his undoing, as an orderly retreat, with bugles, covering fire and coordinated Battalion maneuver would leave us debating his decision but not his courage or his ability to command. Benteen was charged with dwadling on his 'scout to the left'- notice that nobody involved in that movement had anything good to say about it? Guilt at not being where they were most needed? Benteen thought that Custer divided his command and got too far from his reinforcements, and "Lost himself."
What is most strange to me 140 years later is that Custer still has his rabid supporters, and they look for any scrap and bit to discredit the survivors of the battle, claiming they all conspired to commit perjury to cover up dirty little secrets. This Inquiry is ignored, except for the parts that put Reno and Benteen in a bad light, and that is cherry-picked for like-minded Custer groupies. In the end they turned a flesh and blood, earthy man into a parody of himself. The 7th calvary would not be fit for any duty today. With all the drinking, insubordination, womanizing and other knavery the officers would have been cashiered and most of the the enlisted men dishonorably discharged. They were certainly interesting, and a more unlikely group of characters you wouldn't find together outside a Tarantino movie!
