Pet-a-phobes beware

My Cat Loki is the sort of thing you'll either love or hate. If you're a pet lover, chances are you'll love it. If you're more of a `pets are pets' person, than the cheesy dialogue and corny storyline will get to you right away.
The story is about Ameya, a young, handsome and highly talented artist who has stopped painting and has shut himself off from the world for three years because his pet cat died. One day, out in the pouring rain, he comes across a drenched and somewhat violent cat, named Loki. And suddenly he has a purpose again in life.
Just the premise of the story itself gives it all away at once. If it appeals to you than you're prolly in for a treat. If it has you rolling your eyes, so will the rest of the story. On the other hand, even the most die-hard pet lover may find some of it hard to take. "Maybe I don't want to draw anything...Maybe there's nothing worth drawing anymore." "He wasn't just a cat, he was my BROTHER!" "She knows how sensitive I am about this" "Oh, Luka, how I wish you were here. You'd know what to do." "I would never and will never hurt you" (with tears streaming down his face) Some choice pieces of dialogue. Frankly, I felt like slapping Ameya back to his senses and have a small opinion of him as of yet. He's sweet and all, but...drama-queen comes to mind. It really has nothing to do with his object of his affections being a cat; but his whole attitude.
The art is not particularly well-done and the anatomy is off at times. Expressions aren't always the best, with Ameya making (or trying to) a particularly moving speech with tears streaming down his face yet with a stone-faced look. Hopefully the art will improve in subsequent volumes. However, it is well-paced and easy to follow.
One thing I loved actually was the way Loki is drawn as a kittyboy, showing you how Ameya perceives him as a person, not simply a pet. It gives a whole dimension to his character and makes you care more for the cat. While you may scoff at Ameya's obsession with his previous cat, his growing affection and attachment to Loki simply makes more sense because of that human aspect. You will find yourself loving that cat every bit as much as Ameya. On the other hand, this sort of ruins the pet-love aspect of the book; too much human, not enough real pet? But I don't want to pick too much. ^^;
Perhaps what got to me the most was the melodrama. It needed to be toned down a little; maybe one year or a few months instead of three, a little less intensity. I would have taken it more seriously. Honestly, how can we be expected to care for him and his lost cat from the first pages when we know neither? We can, however, expect to soon love Loki the cat as much as we did Herby the car.
So, check it out, it may be your thing. It's a sweet story, if a touch overdone, and pet lovers are sure to adore it. And if Ameya is your fantasy guy, it'll please you even more.
Predictable? You bet. Sweet? As sugar. Enjoyable? Quite. A title to overlook? Not at all.

she is an all around wonderful human being

Met the artist in person, she is an all around wonderful human being. This series is absolutely great an she has continued it (google it for more info) on her own after Tokyo Pop terminated its presence in America. Seller was wonderful and the book was in great condition, shipped quickly.

and well done book.i was disapointed that the series only went two volumes as this is a really good book with a great story and great art;i only hope someday this gets put back into an ongoing series.
