J[ohn].M[erlin]. Powis Smith [1866-1932] was a professor of Old Testament language and literature at the University of Chicago. In The Bible: An American Translation (1935), the Old Testament was translated by a group of scholars under his editorship. He was the author of The Moral Life of the Hebrews (1923) and other works.

A very good old book

I actually read this delightful little book earlier in the year while visiting my son's law school library. Got home and bought an old copy. Splendid and insightful writing that goes to the core of recorded history. Doing a reread adding marginalia; this is very good and original thinking on the very foundation of Western Civ.
