A Mind That Found Itself - An Autobiography by Clifford Whittingham Beers. Documents the Abuse of Mental Patients. This story is derived from as human a document as ever existed; and, because of its uncommon nature, perhaps no one thing contributes so much to its value as its authenticity. It is an autobiography, and more: in part it is a biography; for, in telling the story of my life, I must relate the history of another self; a self which was dominant from my twenty-fourth to my twenty-sixth year. During that period I was unlike what I had been, or what I have been since. The biographical part of my autobiography might be called the history of a mental civil war, which I fought single-handed on a battlefield that lay within the compass of my skull. An Army of Unreason, composed of the cunning and treacherous thoughts of an unfair foe, attacked my bewildered consciousness with cruel persistency, and would have destroyed me, had not a triumphant Reason finally interposed a superior strategy that saved me from my unnatural self.

A Key Work in the History of Mental Health Treatment
By Brooks Keenan
I read an earlier publication of this book and found it exceptionally valuable. It was written by a Yale graduate who had a serious bout with mental illness and was thrown into one of the Dickensian warehouses for the mentally ill in the early 1900s. Given no treatment and treated like a pariah, he nevertheless managed to nurse himself back to mental health and obtain his release. He then led a national crusade to create a therapeutic system for mental health treatment and to make "mental hygiene" a part of school hygiene programs nationwide. It's a compelling true story of the historic turning point at the beginning of a humane system of mental health care.

A Mind that found itself
By Robin Rider-osborne
This book is about a Yale man in the 1900's who ended up in an insane asylm. He was lucky enough to get out and he foundedwhat is now the mental health associations of the united states.
Reading this book changed my life forever. It made me relize that some
have lost sight of his dream and it is up to all of us to make sure the
mental health stigma is erradicated forever.

Dossier Press (Pronoun) edition omits essential correspondence
By RichCzar
This edition by Dossier Press (Pronoun) lacks all of the letters written and received by the author which are included in other digital editions. This improper retelling of the author's word , in my opinion is a major fault, and this edition should be avoided. I found a very good "illustrated" edition at Gutenberg .
