Fascinating presentation of a true story

In writing classes, they teach (or at least used to teach) that all stories fit neatly into one of less than three dozen scenarios. However, I can’t imagine anyone having read anything like Shawn Casey O’Brien’s “For the Love of Long Shots.” I know I never have.
But for those who draw comfort from the familiar, I suggest they consider what would happen if “Meet John Doe” met political/social reality in the 1990’s. The joy of the common folk being organized for the truly common good is infectious.
As for the relating of the tale, those who share Mr. O’Brien’s heritage talk about achieving enhanced eloquence by kissing the Blarney Stone. While a simple peck will suffice, clearly the author has placed a bodacious buss on the beneficent boulder. Just as clearly, the righteous rock has resoundingly reciprocated.
“For the Love of Long Shots” is a literary memoir, not journalism. The difference is that reportage gives you the facts while a memoir, especially in the capable hands of someone like Mr. O’Brien, can also offer all manner of truths, eternal and otherwise.

A joyride of gonzo political action!

An energizing, riveting read, O'Brien definitely has a talent for creating strong narrative drive – and a unique voice that teases you along while conjuring a wholly consistent world view. Readers will enter a delightful world in which characters have evocative names such as "Mountain" and those who use crutches and wheelchairs are referred to as "sticks and wheels." Once you get your bearings, though, it's a page-turning hoot! I hold back one star because "ol' buddy" (such terms of endearment are sprinkled throughout) O'Brien's voice may at times come across as sexist and it is peppered with a few good old-fashioned stereotypes, but all done in a spirit of bonhomie. It may seem loopy (if alcohol-fueled), and occasionally ranty – and a few of his political references are dated and may fly over the heads of some younger readers – after all, he's describing events from 20 years ago – but it's still a joyride of gonzo political action.

O'Brien's book is a delightful read! He shares memories of helping to launch a voter registration drive with humor and high spirits. I had no idea such an enterprise could be so exhilarating and challenging, but O'Brien sweeps you up in the adventure with great gusto. Time well spent! What I especially like about the book is O'Brien's storytelling Irish style. He makes "Hail Fellow, Well Met" company as he draws out his narrative about how he was offended by a Café owner who denied him legal parking all the way through what he quite notably did about it with the help of friends and those who believe in populist democracy. O'Brien will make you a believer as well!
