From Booklist
Chadwick's stories about a tenderhearted guy whose intelligence has been put in a huge, granitelike body with heightened strength and senses are usually quiet dramas that belie superhero conventions by focusing on Concrete's undemonstrative use of his powers to make a small difference. Killer Smile departs from that norm. It's a fast-paced nail-biter in which Concrete takes a backseat, while a psychopathic gunman and his troubled girlfriend take Larry Munro, Concrete's personal assistant, hostage. Tension builds as mild-mannered Larry wonders whether he'll have the courage to act should opportunity arise, and Concrete helplessly stands by as police get in a standoff with Larry's captors. Chadwick's hyperdetailed drawings and cinematic, though text-heavy, storytelling make the suspense tangible right up to the emotionally fraught climax, in which Concrete's fearsome demeanor and persuasive powers prove more useful than his strength and invulnerability. Short stories in which Concrete retreats to the desert to write, attends a Halloween party, and shares Christmas with Larry's family, and 13 horror vignettes sans Concrete, round out the volume. "What choice do we have?"
By Xyon McKell
This trade collects Concrete: Killer Smile issues #1-4 and numerous shorter stories from various anthology comics.

The first three volumes add depth and context to what's here but aren't really prerequisites.

Ron's assistant and friend Larry takes center stage in the titular four issues story that comprises the first half of the collection. A small act of kindness and intended flirting at a gas station result in Larry becoming hostage/driver for a psychotic couple with a gun. This is even darker than normal for Concrete, with the author's stated goal in the prologue to "kick dear Larry out of Eden and into the knife-edged world of Good and Evil." It's another lesson on the harsh reality of the adult world and who we really are deep inside. It also spotlights Concrete's devotion to his friends and how it shapes his view of the world and his actions.

The catch is that for a suspense story, I didn't find it very suspenseful. The progression is pretty cliched in parts and while I know the point is to convey Larry's "everyman" status he's becoming too much of a cipher. He doesn't have much character at this point, which hurts in a story like this.

The short stories fare a bit better, and are the usual snippets of their travels, Concrete's inability to avoid trouble, and deep introspection of everyday occurrences and troubles.

The trade ends with thirteen very short (one to seven pages each) horror stories. As someone who already wishes the series was lighter in tone this wasn't to my personal tastes at all.

While I found this to be the weakest of the Concrete collections thus far it still has some high points and is constructed and presented in the usual careful, thoughtful manner.

One of the best
By Brad Teare
The Concrete series continues on its seemingly unstoppable trajectory. I haven't read a comic this good in a long time (well, excepting the last issues of Concrete). This volume begins with a harrowing 108 page tale of abduction and murder. It is a departure from previous episodes in it's emotional intensity but Chadwick handles the drama as if it is his natural metier. I won't spoil it by describing the plot, suffice it to say there is plenty of action. But it isn't just action. Chadwick shakes things up by adding insightful flashbacks into the main adversary's background that really broaden the tale. The flashbacks reminded me of the best of the TV series Lost.

The remainder of the 208 page volume are short stories articulating the same sense of wonder and irony infusing previous Concrete tales. Also included are 13 tales of horror (ranging from one to six pages each) that do not feature Concrete but are intersting in their own right. They read like the lost episodes of The Twilight Zone. Last but not least there is a 5 page gallery that features Chadwick's masterful command of the art of pen and ink.

Strange but enjoyable little series
By Demosthenes Rex
Alienation is explored with occasional humor--sometimes a monster has a heart of gold. The soft pornography is gratuitous and unnecessary to the story, but overall it is a worthwhile examination of what it means to overcome others' perceptions of you.
