About the Author
Ralph Warner, a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1971. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.
Ira Serkes is a local Realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate (www.berkeleyhomes.com) and a Certified Residential Specialist. He and his wife, Carol, specialize in helping home buyers and sellers throughout the east bay. He is a founding member of The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing and author of Nolo's How to Buy a House in California and Get the Best Deal When Selling Your Home -- San Francisco Bay Area Edition from Gabriel Publications. Serkes is also a graduate of Realtors Institute (GRI), a Certified Internet Real Estate Professional (e-Pro), a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and one of only 4,000 U.S. an Accredited Buyer Representatives (ABR).
George Devine is a licensed real estate broker and a widely respected educator in the real estate field. He holds a B.A. from the University of San Francisco, and an M.A. from Marquette University, and has pursued additional studies at San Francisco State University, Seton Hall University, Fordham University, New York University, the University of California at Berkeley and other academic institutions. Currently, he teaches real estate at the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco, where he was named the Outstanding Adjunct Professor. For several years, George wrote the popular "Real Estate Handbook" column in the weekly Real Estate Guide section of the San Francisco Progress. He is the author of For Sale By Owner in California and coauthor of How to Buy a House in California.

May be useful for people who need a lot of checklists and ...

May be useful for people who need a lot of checklists and navel gazing. None of the necessary forms that you need in order to go through the housebuying process. Real estate agents want the exact forms they are used to using mostly due to ignorance of the law and reluctance to deal with people who are not in the "club". Since the book lacks even a form to make an offer on a property, the reader is stymied. Worse, the book advertises "downloadable forms!" which consist of useless questionnaires and financial statement forms which are available all over the place. Other Nolo press books provide the forms you need for the transactions they cover, i.e. you buy the book on making a will, you will get a form you can use to make a will. Not here.

Not a replacement for getting an agent.

This book is not an end to end guide on how to buy a house without using an agent. The book is premised on you getting an agent that will guide you through the details of your local area. However, there was some useful information regarding California specific environmental and regulatory information as well as customs in California on who pays for what parts of the selling process.

Must read before you start.

This was recommended to us by another coworker when we were struggling with the realtor and broker jargon. It has very good scenarios and common pitfalls that buyers fall into. I HIGHLY recommend this before you even start searching. It will explain the financial side very deeply up to the way the deeds should be recorded if you are in a domestic partnership. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
