Psychologists have always played a key role in determining how the juvenile justice system assesses and treats young offenders. Recent neuropsychological findings shows that there are important developmental differences between juvenile offenders, such as varying levels of maturity, risk potential, and amenability to treatment, not to mention individualized personality traits and possible mental disorders. Psychologists must therefore strive for targeted rehabilitation services to avoid unfair treatment and redirect youth to healthier life choices.
This book is a practical guide that will help psychologists answer important psycho-legal questions to properly assess and treat juvenile offenders. These guidelines primarily focus on disposition evaluations, which describe adolescent offenders and paths to rehabilitation, and transfer evaluations, which determine whether juveniles should be moved to adult courts. Psychological assessments can greatly influence a judge s decision, so this book will help forensic clinicians consider important external factors, such as local laws and the political climate, and present assessment data to judges in a thorough, understandable manner.
This book will also be valuable for attorneys, judges, criminologists, and legal scholars who want to understand the psychological science behind juvenile assessment.

From the Inside Flap
Psychologists have always played a key role in determining how the juvenile justice system assesses and treats young offenders. Recent neuropsychological findings shows that there are important developmental differences between juvenile offenders, such as varying levels of maturity, risk potential, and amenability to treatment, not to mention individualized personality traits and possible mental disorders. Psychologists must therefore strive for targeted rehabilitation services to avoid unfair treatment and redirect youth to healthier life choices. This book provides forensic clinicians with practical strategies for evaluating juvenile offenders and seeking individualized rehabilitation services that will redirect youth to healthier life choices. It highlights five broad areas of juvenile assessment that are essential to any evaluation: veracity in reporting, personality and pathology, risk for dangerous behavior, developmental maturity, and treatment amenability. Readers will also learn how to present assessment data to judges in a thorough and understandable manner while also accounting for local laws and the political climate.

...refreshing, and scientifically grounded quality based perspective...not just the same old risk and protective factor outlook.
By PsychNerd
This book is beautifully written. A bold but refreshing, and scientifically grounded, quality-based perspective on juvenile evaluation and treatment. Salekin provides a fantastic review of the extant literature on this topic. His book offers both breadth and depth - the text is dense enough to feel immersed in a course on juvenile forensic evaluation and treatment, but it is written with such clarity that a novice could understand the material. This book is not just the same old risk and protective factor outlook, but rather this book integrates important information and infuses material on neuroscience, and personality and provides pivotal practical guidelines, and addresses important training and treatment issues. Salekin also takes on APA's “flip-flop” on adolescent maturity and decision-making and provides an explanation for the two perspectives which is likely to help those working in this area. Overall, a very refreshing read that will be helpful for practicing clinicians, academics, legal professionals, and both undergraduate and graduate students seeking training in child forensic evaluation and treatment.

For professional and mainstream audiences!
By CaseyD
Dr. Salekin's book is a must have for academics working with the juvenile justice system, but is also an interesting read for those who simply want to learn more about adolescent disruptive behavior and the possible legal outcomes. The juvenile court system is vastly different from the adult justice system in a variety of ways, and they are highlighted nicely here. Dr. Salekin has brought the most recent research together and presented it for professional and mainstream audiences alike. He covers historical legal cases, forensic evaluation and practice, and treatment of adolescents in the juvenile justice system. It feels like the most up-to-date collection of information on this topic, and I highly recommend this book if this subject matter is what you're looking for!
