Truly Educational and Helpful Advice for Parents & a Great Read for Adult Anime Fans as Well!

This is a well written and affordable guide that every parent of an anime fan will truly appreciate. I picked up a copy from the author himself at a booth he and his daughter had set up at an anime convention. He also led a panel (lecture) for parents under the same title of the book that is the subject of this review and also has a blog that parents will find helpful if the anime culture is a new and strange environment for them.
The guide has a well constructed table of contents and lay out. With plenty of illustrations from different anime series, this guide gives a good list of anime titles parents can begin to research. The guide also does an excellent job building a foundation parents can stand on. Knowledgeable foundations of Japanese history and culture as well as a knowledgeable foundation of the development of anime and its many genres and ratings. The author does an excellent job in reminding the reader that anime is not just a genre of entertainment like that of Western cartoons but is rather an entire medium itself that contains within it helpful genres as well as genres that would not prove helpful to children of certain ages, much like movies, as a medium, have the Disney genre as well as the unhelpful R rated genres or worse.
The author does an excellent job as well bringing in, again and again, the clear statement that he believes parents have both the right and the responsibility to set standards in their household to promote the better development of their children. This is an excellent guide that supports parents and can give confidence to researching what is best for one's family. The final part of the guide has a lot of information for parents on how to positively encourage they're children's interests through anime. Anime showcases many hobbies that can lead your child to be encouraged in their interests whether it is sports, art, flower arrangement, martial arts, cooking, singing, the list goes on and on. As a youth, anime encouraged me to pursue my musical interests, I learned a trumpet solo by ear from watching Castle in the Sky.
I would also recommend this to adult anime fans in general. Being one myself I still learned quite a bit about Japanese history, the development of anime, Japanese culture & daily life activities, the Japanese education system, and was even given practical traveling advice when visiting Japan.
To sum up, this was a well written book that gives truly helpful advice to parents of anime lovers. It is also an excellent read for adult anime fans as well.

Great Resource for Anyone Interested in Anime

I attended an anime convention recently and got to hear Mr. Rothman's panel discussion of this topic. As a newbie to anime and manga I found his explanations and descriptions to be a wealth of useful information. He clearly enjoys the anime art form so this book is not an anime bash by a spooked-out adult, but he is also a parent who takes his role very seriously so neither is this book a blanket "All anime is awesome!" fan treatise.
Rothman's approach is well-balanced and considerate. There are unsavory elements to anime that all fans (and parents of fans) ought to be aware of. There are Japanese cultural references that Americans often find hard to interpret accurately-- as well as the inverse-- some Japanese anime includes wild representations of Western Judeo-Christian culture. Simply put, Japanese anime was originally written for Japanese people. Americans and other Westerners are looking in from the outside, and as with all cultural experiences, we need to approach it with a learner's attitude and sensitivity.
The book is well organized. Includes lots of sample screen shots and photos. Rothman's writing voice is honoring to the Japanese culture, the anime fan, and the conscientious parent, which I appreciated immensely.

The Author Doesn't Understand Anime

The author may be looking out for his child, but I don't think that he has a full understanding of anime and manga.
