Fat Girls From Outer Space
Fran Orenstein
Sometimes kids can be really mean. Bullying, name calling, envious or just place jealous for no specific reason. Freddy is a smart with a lot of friends yet she is not happy with who she is an at times feels invisible. Thinking that her appearance is anything but pretty, overweight and not realizing that everything is not outer appearance or looks, Freddy fails to see what others see her mirror.
School can be trying at time for middle school girls when faced with friends that seem fair-weather, or just going shopping and hearing the sales girls say that maybe you and your mother should go to the plus size department, can really get a young kids spirit down.
Boys can be really insulting at times and when Freddy and her friends attend a soccer game and are insulted by some of the boys, you won’t believe what the coach does. Author Fran Orenstein brings to light so many issues that teens and pre-teens face when entering middle school and high school. It’s hard sometimes to be the odd person out or to feel that you are not pretty, not good enough or smart enough to hang with the popular crowd. The boys in this graphic novel set the tone as they insult, even hit or hurt Freddy and her friends just to be mean. But, Freddy has two great friends that come to her aid at times but even they have a falling out.
Being overweight can really make young teens feel out of place and not worthy of having friends but author Fran Orenstein changes that all as well first some get kicked out off of the basketball team for being overweight. Next they decide to join the volleyball team but first Freddy gets some advice from a teacher and the idea to keep write her thoughts in a journal helping her to deal with feelings. Even hoping to express to her mother how she feels about her new relationship and at times needing her to be more of a mother is a great way to teach parents to take notice of their children especially when their moods change.
Freddy is not just smart, talented and really pretty but she like so many would like to be called Freddy and not Frederic. With a mother who has just gone though a divorce and dealing with her father and his young new girlfriend, twelve year old Freddy Gold has tons to deal with but with her friends Dolly and Eva who are also overweight, they find out something about themselves that will make them soar. But, first they have to audition, then they have to practice and finally they have to learn to overcome their feelings of inadequacy and much more. Throughout the novel the author allows teens and pre-teens to hear Freddy’s thoughts and understand her feelings as she shares her diary which is private so you will have to read the book to find out what she wrote and how creating this journal or diary greatly helped her. Added in the pictures are quite expressive, they tell the story on their own merit and they help make the story come alive, allowing readers to see the emotions first hand whether, fear, anger, joy or surprise the characters come alive.
Friendship, understanding, tolerance, bullying, anger, fear, self-esteem and family love and loyalties are just some of what educators, parents, discussion groups, counselors and teachers can talk about after reading this outstanding graphic novel. Older brothers can really come to your aid when you least expect it and when a group of bullies decide to take control and ruin the debut of the Fat Girls From Outer Space watch what Freddy’s brother and his friends do. But, Freddy ahs spunk and when Brock and his friends decide to harass and bully her watch what she does.
When the show starts and the audience is ready the girls take center stage and The Fat Girls from Outer Space wearing their special shirts tear down the house. But, not before someone teaches Brock and his friends a lesson they will never forget. Teachers that come to the aid of students and a mother who realizes that her daughter is growing up and needs to make her own choices but can rely on her for advice and more, Fat Girls from Outer Space tops the charts once again for YA books. On page 47 listen to the song and read the words carefully as you hear them sing: “We’re the Fat Girls from Outer Space, We don’t care about size or race, We just want to get along.” How amazing is that! Wait until you hear the rest. Just what happens at the concert? What does the crowd think and do you want any of the cookies, pies and chocolate cakes? Do you think Freddy will overlook her diet just this once? She is trying hard to lose weight and is doing it gracefully. Fat Girls From Outer Space: I was one growing up and I work hard at being thin. Thin, not so thin or just whatever size you are is what is right for you! Everyone is different. Not everyone is going to be thin. Not everyone worries about his or her weight. But, wouldn’t it be great if everyone accepted others for who they are and we did away with hate, prejudice, bullying and intolerance. Learn how when you read this outstanding graphic novel.

Clever handling of a subject we all can relate to -
By ellen
This is another book that is for 'Tweens', but is delightful for everyone. Fat Girls From Outer Space is Fran Orenstein's latest book. It deals with a 12 year old girl who is overweight and has to endure being made fun of by bullies in her school. Her parents are also getting a divorce. The young girl, Freddy Gold, is not comfortable in her own skin. She has so much talent, writing and singing and music, but no one seems to take her seriously because of her weight. It is painful. When Freddy goes to camp that summer, she meets an African American girl named Dolly, who is also overweight, and they form a solid friendship. As they enter what we call middle school here, they meet another overweight girl, Eva Rios, a Hispanic girl who is also overweight. They share not only the weight struggle, but a love of music. They transcend the people who make fun of them and their weight struggle by forming a band, Fat Girls From Outer Space - and they are great!
Ms. Orenstein not only addresses the child weight issues, but we learn a lesson of living together - whatever race or heritage, kids are kids. Period. It is handled beautifully.
I can relate to this book. I was one of the fat kids. Luckily, I excelled in music, writing, and was among the smart kids in class. I didn't get too much grief. Instead, I gave myself grief. I hated being fat. I didn't know how to correct that. In my ethnic background, a healthy baby was a fat baby...and baby, was I fat! My 'baby fat' followed me through adulthood.
I've lost 100 pounds. I was like Freddy.
She took her personality and talent and transcended her problems, with the help of her friends, and a great counselor who also knew what Freddy was going through.
People don't know the power of words. Especially to a young person. Fat Girls From Outer Space is for everyone who has ever had something they were self conscious of, or made fun of, and for those who didn't have those problems to see what words and actions can do.
An imaginative and wonderful book.

I like fat girls!
By Alan Black
This is not about Outer Space. This is not about space ships. This is not even science fiction. It is a first class story of a tween caught in the day-to-day dramas that afflict tweens across this country. That does not mean this book is common or ordinary. It is an atypical look at relatable issues that are relevant to tweens and adults alike.
Remember feeling fat in school? Bullied? Discriminated against? Laughed at? Do you remember family crisis and divorces ripping your family apart? Remember when pimples were a tragedy? This book is about a tween struggling with issues we all found significant in our lives at one time or another and she does it will as little grace and courage that most of us had.
The author has an obvious insight into the lives of young girls and she has blessed us with a heartwarming, yet challenging and enjoyable novel. I recommend this for everyone from young girls through great grandpa.
