Amazing multi-layered reinterpretation of a world of Gods and Man in which brutality and misogyny are rampant!
By Bella Swann Erotica
This book was absolutely amazing in its multi-layered reinterpretation of a world of Gods and Man in which brutality and misogyny are rampant. I could not predict what was going to happen next in terms of major character actions and for me that made this book an even more fascinating and compelling read. Johanis clearly has ideas for a sequel because my subconscious kept pulling me back to re-read certain scenes as I felt they would become more important later on in the overall story arc if not necessarily in this book. Even after I got to the ending (and it was a mind blowing ending but no spoilers), I still could not be absolutely sure what had happened to several of the characters and will have to wait to find out more in the next book. I don't want to give spoilers but will just say that the general plot has the God Akad go off on a mission to find the Siren and throw himself on her mercy for his actions that had led to her dethroning and imprisonment. I did not like Akad no matter how hard I tried to do so because he was the main character. Even when I tried to excuse his actions and those of his soldiers as a symptom of the time, his brutality towards Aphrodite, Venus, his wife, and a young girl made it hard for me to bond with him notwithstanding the crimes against humanity he had committed aeons before. Even when I learnt more of his backstory and his treatment at the hands of his father, I still thought he needed to be punished for his actions although I could not have predicted the nature of his fate. The character that blew me away was Siren - a powerful goddess who believes in the universal laws of justice regardless of whether one is human or God. She is a symbol of female power and in the final chapters of this book, her reckoning begins. I just wanted to offer a quick word of warning to readers who might be wanting a light-hearted, fluffy story of Gods and mortals - this is not that story. This is a story of love, hate, humiliation, revenge, and justice, and well-worth reading!

Even the most powerful gods have regrets...
By Robert William Case
Siren's Reckoning tells the story of an all-powerful patriarch in a mystical time experiencing a tumultuous mid-life crisis. His name is Akad and for much of his existence, his only techniques for dealing with others (gods or mortals) is with sex or struggle. The book's early chapters take place in the pantheon where the author introduces a gaggle of gods and goddesses through their sexual antics and proclivities. It takes a while, too long I think, for a plot to unfold, but once it does, the story is captivating and well-worth the read.

Akad leaves the safety of the nest to embark on something akin to a hero's journey: one that becomes his individual quest for redemption. The unlikely object of his quest is to win the heart of an equally powerful matriarch, a goddess named Siren. The quest is all the more challenging because they have a history, including unrequited love. First, he must find her. On one level the book's theme is about crime and punishment. But on a deeper level Siren's Reckoning is also about redemption and atonement. Akad's journey includes sailing across the mystical islands of the ancient Aegean Sea to a volcanic island paradise, which bears a striking resemblance to legendary Atlantis. The setting could be enchanting, but Akad and his crew can't resist the temptations for pillaging, plundering, and sexual predation. Not surprisingly, the story ends with an eruptive climax.

With three mighty and patriarchal religions all laying claim to the same piece of present day Middle Eastern real estate, in this reviewers opinion the later theme makes this book both timely and compelling. It is a good story and there is an obvious depth of research behind it. The book would benefit from another round of editing. For all these reasons I give the book four stars and strongly recommend it to adult readers with a taste for historical fantasy.

I simply didn't like them. I had no one to root for
By booklove
This book was difficult for me. It was written well and the story was interesting, but what I struggled with was the characters. I simply didn't like them. I had no one to root for, no one I wanted to see succeed or make it to the end. I even stopped halfway through, because I was simply unhappy and frustrated with the characters. The only ones I enjoyed were minor ones and I didn't see enough of them to truly attach myself. In spite of this or perhaps because of it I believe this would be the perfect book for a book club or for people to discuss. It brings up so many questions of morality and it's role in society and religion. The characters you believe should be above mortal failings are the ones that have the most faults. For example, one of the main characters, Venus, is the supposed to be the goddess of love, yet she is so wrapped up in her own obsession and lust it's obvious she has no idea what real love should be.

I believe I will read this book again, possibly several more times, because I simply can't decide on it. I feel like I need to marinate on it. To think on the characters and their faults, then read it again.

The message is profound, that much I know, because it struck me. It made me think on it after I set it down. It made me wonder and it made me look at myself.

Isn't that what a good book should do?
