Too much time spent on describing the heroin's romantic connection with her ex

In my humble opinion, the author spent too many time talking about how great the heroin felt about her ex-fiance, so you have to question her feelings for the hero. Just not believable. From the get go I was bored with the heroin's whining. She was like 'Mark is wonderful, Mark is the only man who understand me' and bla bla bla, so how could we buy that her sudden feelings for Damien were genuine, sincere or even honest?
Seriously, the author's decision to spend pages, telling us how the heroin was ready to defy her father and family for her ex because he was the only man understanding her, was tiresome. Did she want readers to feel a type of connection between Charlotte and Mark instead of Charlotte and the hero? I just couldnt feel chemistry between the hero and the heroin. I felt fooled and want my money back.

Pretty Silly

Was pretty underwhelmed by this book.

Charlotte is an heiress who clearly lives in a world where that is all that matters. She tries to get out of that by becoming engaged to a man who supposedly sees past that--of course that isn't the case. Her fiance turns out to be a scuzz bucket.

Damien Wynter (I couldn't get over the cheeze-ball spelling of that) swoops in and saves the day. He proposes since they are both far too wealthy for mere mortals to intermingle with that they get together. Because Charlotte, more than anything wants a baby.

They even have a rather goofy (in my mind) dance off scene where Charlotte challenges Damien with her years of ballet moves and he matches her.

I just couldn't get inside the minds of these characters, they seemed pretty flat to me.

But it was alright for a smidge of escapism.

I do agree with the other reviewers. Cheez-ball way to spell Wynter is number one, & the "dance off" was really hokey. This is not Ms. Darcy's best work for sure. Charlotte was great at whining for sure. I couldn't believe how patient Damien was! This is not one to spend your money on, just borrow it from your local public library. It's what I did so it wasn't a waste on my resources. The book that follows this though, Billionaire's Captive Bride is much more charming and an all around better read. It's about Charlottes brother Peter so if you want to know what happened to him, she did write a book about him.

A Fun Short Adventure!

I admit, I not a huge fan of the fae and in fact, have read very few books about them. More often than not I feel let down by them but once in awhile something fun comes about that is just so entertaining it is hard to resist it.

This little prequel novella was just such a read. I had fun while reading this. There was a lot packed into this little book and it made me very curious about picking up the full length novel.

It was very well written, edited, and had some engaging characters that I can already tell I will like.

I am truly looking forward to reading the first book.

A terrific minuet and invitation to a greater story

With this story, Megan Haskell invites us into a world where elves, humans and pixies coexist. What are pixies? Not wishing to spoil the story I'll only say, think tiny barracudas with wings. Haskell's writing is crisp and efficient, and she introduces us to a compelling character I want to learn more about. I am really excited to read the novel, Sanyare, that builds on Pixie Tamer's world.

A perfect taste for the book.

Pixie Tamer is the prequel that leads us into Sanyare. We are given a taste of Rie in battle and her encounter with the pixies. Rie is a human girl living among the Elves working hard to earn her place among them training hard each day. After a day of letting an elf get the best of her in a fight, her guardian sends her off to survive an encounter with the pixies. However this encounter with the pixies will be anything but what she expects.
We are only given a few short pages of who Rie is but I can see already she’s the kind of character that I’m going to enjoy. Right off I can’t pronounce any of the other characters so far in the book but that’s alright with me I just make it up in my head which is half the fun. While Pixie Tamer is short it does have just enough to wet my appetite for the book and I can’t wait to dive into Rie’s world. While short the story is well written and captivating it draws the reader in giving just enough to leave them wanting more. I can’t wait to start the book Sanyare: The Last Descendant which is my next read.

Leigh Michaels never fails to please. The Fake Fiance is a fast paced contemporary romance, but the story is deeper and more complex than a simple love story. It's a relationship story, about how far a daughter will go to help her father when he is unfairly attacked, plus, a legal story about what happens when false accusations are made in the workplace.

Fun, full of man/woman tensions - business, challenge and sexual

Leigh Michaels has a very special style of writing, mixed with lots of tensions, personal interactions, fun, laughter. Always light hearted, with some semi-tense moments and yet good story line. Always enjoy her books and have read most at least once; now building a kindle library.

About the Author

Jim Bainbridge is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has been an active member of the California Bar for more than 30 years. He is a licensed California real estate broker, and a past recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate studies in mathematics at UC Berkeley. He is the author numerous works that have been published in more than 50 journals in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands.

the practice exams book and the Real Estate Exam Prep book we picked up for a song on Amazon are far more valuable than the clas

I ordered both books--Real Estate Practice Exams and Real Estate Exam Prep--for my daughter. She was having trouble with the reading materials assigned in class by one of the major national realty companies. These two books are much more user friendly than the manual (and tons of loose papers) given in class, making things easier to organize and understand. I've done the comparison myself, and there really isn't one. These books are much easier to follow and understand than the manual (and tons of papers).

Pardon me if I'm a bit off the mark here, Major Realtor, but from what I've surmised, the practice exams book and the Real Estate Exam Prep book we picked up for a song on Amazon are far more valuable than the class for which I shelled out a cool $400.

I can't help but wonder if whoever put the manual for the class together purposely made it hard to understand, and wrote this book to make more money!

An utterly enchanting and engrossing tale of the medieval heart

The young medieval nun Agnes Dei has given her vowed life to a convent and her heart to a dragon: huge and shimmering, fiery and lonely, she discovers him in the forest one day and forever after he vows he is her dream and that she gave him life. He comes to her now and then, accidentally unfurling his powerful wings and breaking the stone wall of her cloister cell; he takes her on his back and rides her beyond the known corners of the world. But he belongs to the skies and lives on the edge of eternity; she is human and devoted to her more humble promises.

One day she is found dead, leaving a suicide note on parchment. The nuns are both in grief and horror as the things Agnes Dei believed begin to make some of them question their strict Christian vows. Into their lives, trying to discover why she died, comes Edmund, a handsome young monk who has once killed a man over a girl and who now goes in search of the dragon Wyver to understand the secrets the young nun kept.

Christine Emmert writes with great poetry and enchantment; this little novel is not only an utterly original and compelling story, but delves deeply into the hearts of humans and dragons, asking: What do we believe? What decisions do we make in his life? In the end, what is love?

An unusual tale, beautifuly told

You know, you look at a title like “The Nun’s Dragon” and figure it has to be symbolic, right? Well, in this case that’s literally what the story is about – a nun and a dragon. It threw me for a loop at first too, but author Christine Emmert’s skill at storytelling is effective enough that it doesn’t take more than a few pages to come around to the idea.

The basic story here is how a reluctant member of a small, isolated convent falls in love with a dragon, and what happens when she is found dead under the convent’s waterwheel. I say basic story because there’s so much more to this story than that. Yes, there’s the basic murder mystery, but beyond that it’s a look at faith and dogma, not to mention just being a story where unforgettable characters interact in complex and compelling ways. That and an epic battle between magical creatures that is sure to satisfy many a fantasy fan. Emmert does a wonderful job bringing conventional subjects together in unconventional ways, and making conventional styles – the mystery and fantasy genres – seem daring and new. There is beauty here. And ugliness. Pure joy and pure sadness as well.

The Nun’s Dragon is a short novel (a novella, maybe?), though obviously a very memorable one. It might have been nicer to have a longer novel to draw the story out a bit and let us spend more time with the various characters, but that’s a minor complaint. The ebook also contains the short story Lilith, which is set in modern times and is reminiscent of some of Laird Barron’s troubling horror stories.

It’s hard to offer up a quick recommendation for a book as unusual as The Nun’s Dragon. Fans of medieval tales and fantasy fans are the obvious target audience, but both camps will need to be open-minded to really appreciate what is going on here. If you’re willing to take a chance on an unusual tale, you are going to find something special here.

Loss of innocence, loss of certainty

Since I dearly love dragons, I was naturally very excited to receive a copy of Christine Emmert's "The Nun's Dragon" from the publisher, Dante's Heart.

"The Nun's Dragon" begins with an apparent suicide, then slips gracefully into the past to uncover the tragic, secret friendship between Sister Agnes Dei and Wyver, her dragon. This short novel is a complex narrative about loss of innocence and loss of certainty. It's a story about the degree to which any church can comprehend or adequately reflect the compassionate nature of God. It will appeal most to those who love and endlessly reread Milton's "Paradise Lost," and will likely prove less exciting to readers who prefer the dragons of Naomi Novik or Rachel Hartman. There's a touch of "Kristin Lavransdatter" about the medieval setting that I liked very much.

The Kindle version of "The Nun's Dragon" includes a bonus short story, "Lilith," which I feel lacks many of the strengths of the Emmert's longer work. I would recommend skipping "Lilith" entirely and getting right to the good stuff.

The basic problem centres on the matter of restoring literally tons of treasured properties to their rightful owners, either to the victims themselves or, as their numbers are fast diminishing, to their heirs. But to what extent has justice actually been done in the past? And can ‘fair and just solutions’ be implemented in the future? This book provides some of the answers, but certainly not all.

The ‘fair and just solutions’ of the title refers to the standards, or principles established as the basis for fair and just assessment of claims by the owners of looted art as formulated in the Washington Principles 1998 endorsed by forty-four governments participating in the 1998 Washington Conference on Holocaust Era Assets. These principles are reproduced in one of the book’s fourteen appendices, (which also present the major international initiatives in this area from 1943 to 2009).

With its self-explanatory subtitle, ‘Alternatives to litigation in Nazi-looted art disputes: status quo and new developments,’ the book is the result of a conference -- of the same name -- created under the auspices of the Dutch Restitutions Committee and held in 2012 at the Peace Palace in The Hague to discuss the vexed question of Nazi-looted art.

Editor Evelien Campfens is, note, the Director of the Bureau of the Restitutions Committee -- a fact which enhances the book’s authority, authenticity and fascination. For those of us who are only vaguely familiar with the enormity and scope of this subject, this book provides much information and detail.

For the most part, the book contains papers submitted to the conference by leading experts in this field and also features three interviews with actual claimants willing to share their experiences. The authoritative and very moving Foreword was written by Jet Brussmaker, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science.

The Conference and the book are welcome and timely initiatives which have shone the light of logic and informed opinion into this complex and murky subject. It is useful to have a Dutch perspective on this ongoing international problem, as Holland was one of the European countries that suffered the most under Nazi occupation. Robert Habush was in his second year of law school when his wife gave birth to their first child, a healthy baby girl. Just two months later, a defective vaccine irreparably damaged the child's brain.

Eventually, Habush successfully sued the drug maker, won a settlement that helped care for his daughter, and the vaccine was pulled from the market. Born of intense personally tragedy, this was famed trial lawyer Robert Habush's first major victory.

An engaging book about an exceptional attorney and an even more exceptional person. Bob Habush built a reputation for his effective advocacy for the injured. The book provides a compelling account of the major milestones in that career, while providing insight into the personal stories that fueled his passion and commitment. A good read not only for aspiring attorneys, but anyone looking for a compelling narrative of how to build a life in service to others.

Illuminates the Divisive Unemployment Politics of Yesterday -- and Today

Dr. Levine-Clark brilliantly exposes the roots of an enduring conundrum: In a volatile, largely faceless modern economy, how can we distinguish the "honest" unemployed who truly want jobs from "loafers" who seem to be unwilling to work, and how should this influence the provision of welfare benefits? She begins the story in late nineteenth century Britain, when Britons first wrestled with the problems of modern mass unemployment, and follows it through the early twentieth. As the nation's economic and social foundations shuddered, working-class men and government officials negotiated new definitions of deservedness, citizenship, and masculinity that incorporated reliance on welfare. It is a unique and fascinating period in history, narrated with unfailing clarity and incisive analysis.

But it speaks to our world as well. The recent "Great Recession" witnessed clamorous debates -- in the U.S., Britain, and beyond -- over the deservedness of the millions of newly unemployed, their debts to society, and society's obligations to them. The NOLO books seem to always be excellent

The IRS collector said "I see you did your homework" and he filed the form to suspend collection activities. He asked me the name of the book I used (I didn't tell him I had read a book). I thought that was odd so I said I couldn't remember.
