One day in the small Mississippi town of Laurel, a 26-year-old expectant mom named Karen Street sat down at the edge of her bathtub—and felt her hip split in two. The episode was so bizarre it wasn’t until later, after she saw the doctor, that she realized her bone disease was almost certainly linked to her father-in-law’s business. Winston Street ran a machine shop that drilled the gunk out of pipes used by Chevron, Shell and other giants of the oil industry—creating a white powder that covered Karen Street’s husband’s overalls every night, which then landed in their vegetable garden...and was highly radioactive.
Winston Street didn’t know the dust was poisonous, nor did his workers or his family. But someone did know. Indeed, there was evidence that America’s Big Oil companies were aware for decades that they were pulling up radium from under the earth, poisoning yards like Street’s while dumping radioactive water in unlined pits across the South. Now, to prove that and win justice for his blue-collar clients, an untested young lawyer named Stuart H. Smith and his eccentric team would have to get the better of America’s best-known radiation attorney and the global clout of Chevron inside a Mississippi courtroom.
In a gripping tale that reads as if torn from the pages of a John Grisham novel, Crude Justice tells how the Little Guy can take on the behemoth of Big Oil and win…with the help of a good attorney. Recounting more than two decades as a top environmental lawyer in the toxic oil patch of the American South, Smith tells the story of how he upped the ante again and again—getting the best of Chevron, then taking on the world’s most powerful corporation, ExxonMobil, with $1 billion on the line, and finally ferreting out the elusive truth behind BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Smith finally builds upon the courtroom drama of his past and the environmental threats of the present—from fracking to the Keystone XL pipeline—to issue a resounding call for America to break its crippling addiction to fossil fuels.

Review
"Crude Justice is a hugely satisfying legal thriller in which Big Oil suffers a well-deserved fall at the hands of bright, underfunded young lawyers and their small businessmen employers. At the same time, it is an alarming close-up view of an industry that routinely distorts or hides any evidence against it."
—John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
"In Crude Justice, attorney Stuart Smith reveals the ruthless bag of tricks Big Oil employs everywhere from small town oil fields to state courthouses to the highest offices of Washington, DC—and what you and I can do to stop it. An eye-opening call to action."
—David Brock, author of the New York Times bestseller Blinded By the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative
"Stuart Smith draws on his deep Southern roots to produce a true-to-life, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, hard-hitting David vs. Goliath thriller. Crude Justice is hands down one of the most powerful environmental books of our age."
—Josh and Rebecca Tickell, directors of the award-winning documentaries Fuel and The Big Fix
"Crude Justice is a page turner that reads like a crime novel—only the events documented in the book are all too real. . . . This book is a reminder of how difficult it is to shine a spotlight on even the most basic life-and-death stories from the frontlines of the energy economy. It is also a reminder of why those stories are so important and must be exposed."
—David Sirota, of the New York Times bestselling book The Uprising
About the Author
Stuart H. Smith is a practicing plaintiff attorney licensed in Louisiana. He is a founding partner of the New Orleans-based law firm Smith Stag, LLC. The firm’s practice is concentrated in the fields of environmental law and toxic torts. Smith has practiced law for nearly 25 years and is recognized internationally as a crusader against major oil companies and other polluters for damages associated with radioactive oilfield waste.
Smith has also been lead counsel on more than 100 oil pollution cases, which focus primarily on damages caused by the wastewater and sludge oil companies discharge into the environment. Smith’s litigation experience includes a lawsuit against Ashland Oil for contaminating the Lee aquifer, once one of the largest sources of fresh water for residents in eastern Kentucky. He also sued Chevron Corporation for damages associated with that company’s contamination of the groundwater in the rural town of Brookhaven, Mississippi. His firm also represents clients injured by chemicals and defective drugs.
Smith is currently representing commercial fishermen, whose livelihoods have been devastated by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

A welcome collection of real wins
By David Wineberg
What is different if not unique about this environmental disaster book is that the hero wins the battles, repeatedly, and bigger and better every time. Not that it is optimistic or even encouraging, but it does provide a modicum of satisfaction that at least some redress is possible.
Stuart Smith was not a passionate environmentalist. He was a newly minted liability lawyer when some new clients descended on him - after firing a string of other attorneys. The ensuing courtroom drama is worthy of a motion picture, and it caused Smith to accumulate an ever more sophisticated set of investigative and courtroom skills. He has parlayed them into massive wins over the likes of Chevron, Exxon and the ever present BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.
His insider's look at how Big Oil defends itself is a confirmation of everything you ever thought of as pure evil. No lives are worth more than quarterly profits. Nothing is worth saving that causes additional oversight, regulation or fines. They play for all or nothing. They are accustomed to having their way with victims, courts, states and the federal government.
Smith is an unlikely hero. He flaunts the wealth he's claimed from massive settlements and jury awards. He lives high, in a state that is among the poorest in the country - both because of and despite Big Oil. But he's about the only successful guard dog there is. And he tells a great story. He explains that the tort lawyer is the last and only hope in a rigged system. In all his years and research, he has never seen the government side with a victim.
Crude Justice is about toxins, mostly of the radioactive variety (radium), that children play in and eat, that workers bring home on their clothes, and that oil companies donate to playgrounds in their used pipes. It is the perfect complement to another book I reviewed, Hydrocarbon Hucksters: Lessons from Louisiana on Oil, Politics, and Environmental Justice, which deals with the statewide effects that wanton negligence Big Oil foists on benighted Louisiana. Between them you have a complete overview of the miasma, from micro to macro.

Real Inside Information

Fascinating case studies/autobiography about the oil business and a lawyer who fought for little guys and won. Thought provoking and a call to action for anyone paying attention. The book details oil companies' immense power in all parts of government. The book brilliantly illuminated the full story (versus that provided by the media and press agents) of BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Suggested for anyone wanting to be a better informed and participating citizen.

This is a great tale of talented advocate that breaks ground on the Big Oil companies lying, cheating, and stealing. Very fun story and legal tale all with the background of a southern charm. Enjoyed this and would recommend for anyone interested in legal, political, and southern realm.
