A CLEAR DIRECTION FOR YOUR FIRM

If you are involved in any way with the future development of your law firm -- particularly if it is a medium to larger-sized firm -- this special report from The Law Society should be of interest.
Taking a systematic, methodical and analytical approach to the challenge (fundamentally) of increasing the firm’s revenue and profitability, the author, Robin Dicks, provides a carefully thought-out yet practical guide to identifying the factors which initiate and sustain future growth, while also pointing out the areas in which costly mistakes might occur.
Take Chapter 5 for example, on ‘Growing Billings’ which identifies the five key drivers for achieving just that. Referred to as the ‘building blocks’ of improved performance, these include: reduced write-off… increased client value… improved ability to extend relationships… improved client acquisition… and finally… more productive referrer relationships. These factors are all inter-related, but explaining the dynamics of each is obviously important, which of course the author does.
‘All revenue emanates from some sort of client relationship,’ he reminds us, adding that extending and enhancing relationships with existing clients -- by offering additional capabilities and services, for example -- should ultimately ‘improve the firm’s ability to add new clients.’ The focus throughout the report is on emphasizing those activities that work – and have been proved to work -- while at the same time minimizing wasted effort. (Note the chapter on ‘reasons for failure’).
This is a logically structured report which provides illustrative real life case studies, charts, diagrams and diagnostics. The author, a noted expert on law firm management, has written or contributed to a number of other Law Society publications. This report, he explains is not about a ‘quick fix’, nor is it just about marketing communications and related activities. ‘These can help, he says, ‘but they are secondary to what this report concentrates on.’
The report instead, aims to impart the principles of a clear strategy and the tools needed by law firms to manage and align efforts around a clearly defined and understood vision for future growth.
Also useful in this report are the two appendices, including the note on online references (some of them free) to additional expert advice and help in the area of law firm management.
