Block, MD, FAAP and Past President, The American Academy of Pediatrics “…moving fiction based on non-fiction. Reece’s book, besides being entertaining and enlightening, is a tool for all Americans…supports the reality of abusive head trauma.” Judge Charles D. Gill, Connecticut Superior Court

Why Truth is Often the Second Casualty in a Shaken Baby Syndrome Trial
By I. Michael Grossman
In To Tell the Truth, Dr. Robert M Reece shows how seriously flawed our trial system is when it comes to the use of and reliance on the so-called experts who would discredit the Shaken Baby Syndrome concept. Reece's book, while fiction, is based on his years of experience both as clinician and a trial expert. For a lay reader, it was disconcerting to read how defendants buy experts who will, for a substantial fee, confuse jurors with blue-smoke-and-mirror medical testimony aimed at arguing that Shaken Baby Syndrome isn't real and doesn't occur. Such “experts” belong among the ranks of the flat-earth folks, the deniers of evolution, and the climate change skeptics who would ignore solid science because they have a vested interest to do so. To Tell the Truth, in addition to being well-written, provides important insights into the judicial system that everyone should know about. The fastest way I can think of to understand why the rules related to medical testimony in trials need to be rewritten, is to read Reece's thoughtful, fictional expose. Maybe then we'll learn how - To Tell the Truth.

An emotional ride with the truth at stake.
By Scott A. Benton
This book is an excellent story and a commentary on those who would subvert our justice system. As a "Law and Order" fan, this book is in that vein. It opens with a tragedy and walks the reader through the issues culminating in a criminal trial. This is a solid character and issue study with a grounding in real life drama and science. I own all of Dr. Reece's books. His other books are outstanding textbooks of child maltreatment science. However like "Law and Order", it is this book that engages your emotions to teach life concepts.

and expert witnesses can make a fine living issuing opinions that are predictable if not always ...
By Merrick2145
Dr. Reece succeeds at the very hard job of exposing institutional failures of the adversary system of justice in a fictional account full of three-dimensional people who fully engage your sympathy and concern. The flaws of the adversary system spring largely from understandable human weaknesses. Lawyers want to win, fact witnesses are fallible, and expert witnesses can make a fine living issuing opinions that are predictable if not always true. Dr. Reece's lifetime of professional experience in child abuse cases give him clear insight into the shortcomings of the world of criminal justice and what drives the people who inhabit it. I am not sure the shortcomings affect only the defense side, as they do in his book, but perfect balance is not a fair measure of an author any more than it is a fair measure of a trial lawyer. The adversary system of justice encourages adversary excess. It is the worst judicial system in the world, except for the others.
