The Panchatantra Retold: Part 3 - Kakolukiyam, by Sonal Panse

What do you do as a father and a King if your three heirs are indolent and ignorant, and, as a result, the very future of your kingdom is at stake?

You turn the three brats over to the intellectual powerhouse Pandit Vishnu Sharma!

The Panchatantra Retold is a collection of entertaining and enlightening folk-tales from Ancient India, originally narrated by Pandit Vishnu Sharma to the three Princes of Mahilaropya to infuse them with the much-needed worldly wisdom that traditional learning had failed to impart.

So the Panchatantra can actually be described as an Ancient self-help book on how to navigate successfully through the various vicissitudes of life. It is important to mention though that these stories are not didactic and moralistic in any sentimental, black and white way. The good do not always win here. This led the German scholar Dr. Johannes Hertel to describe the stories as 'Machiavellian' in tone. It is a possibility that Machiavelli himself was familiar with the stories from the Panchatantra and that they were something of an influence for his own work 'The Prince'.

The stories offer a vivid picture of life in Ancient India, and it is interesting to discover that, for all the progress made over the many centuries since the Panchatantra was written, the essential qualities of human psychology have not altered to that great an extent.

The stories are divided into five sections - Mitra Bheda (Loss of Friends), Mitra Samprapti (The Gaining of Friends), Kakolukiyam (The Fierce Enmity between the Crows and the Owls), Labdhapranasam (Loss of Gains), and Apariksitakarakam (Ill-considered Action).

This is the third section, Kakolukiyam (The Fierce Enmity between the Crows and the Owls). The main story is about how the crows plan to defend themselves against the marauding attacks of the owls, and the rest of the stories show how they put this plan into action. This is perhaps the most politically-tinged section of the Panchatantra, and is said to be greatly influenced by Acharya Chanakya's 'Arthashastra'.

There are 18 stories in this volume.

The tales of wise India
By vardan partamyan
Very well told parable stories - with life lessons aplenty. I enjoyed the chance of exploring the folk tales of ancient India - of a country and a culture as wise as it is full of good humor and devoid of judgment. The bottom line is - life is life... it is a bit of a cruel thing but don't let it stop you in enjoying it. Recommended!

A well written and engaging collection of interwoven folk stories from India
By Allen Tiffany, author of Youth In Asia, a Vietnam War novella
I found this short book delightful and well prepared.

The book – nicely illustrated by the author – is a retelling of some of ancient India’s oral folklore. As the author explains: “In the Sanskrit language…the Panchatantra is a collection of witty and entertaining folk-tales from Ancient India, involving both humans and anthropomorphic animals that are meant to represent certain types of humans.” She explains the story by noting that “Each section begins with a main tale or frame story, in which one character begins narrating a new tale to another character to prove his/her point, and the listener then takes his/her turn to begin yet another tale to make his/her point. The stories thus develop from one another and are interwoven together. This was a common practice of story-telling in Ancient India.”

I am a writer and well read, and I’ve lived in Asia and traveled in India, but I make no pretense of understanding the social or literary impact or importance of these folk stories. Form a purely entertainment perspective – as a reader – I can say these are well told, well presented and very engaging. The book is not long; it only took me about an hour or so to read. And the drawing, though simplistic, nicely illustrate the main characters and dramatic situations.

It is certainly not your typical American fare, but it is well written and an engaging departure. …the owls and crows have a score to settle!

The Panchatantra- Part 3 is full of fables and parables from ancient India that call to mind the age-old classics of Aesop.

The Panchatantra- Part 3 is full of fables and parables from ancient India that call to mind the age-old classics of Aesop. The stories are full of life lessons, but not without adventure, action, and humor.

King Amar Shakti of ancient India has become far too disappointed and frustrated with his three sons to handle their indolence on his own any longer. So he hands them over to Pandit Vishnu Sharma, an “intellectual powerhouse” who contains wisdom of the ages, to teach his sons the lessons they must understand.

I do not understand much about the history of these stories and how significantly Sonal Panse recreated or reinvented them, but The Panchatantra Retold is captivating and thought-provoking, with humor included. Part 3 was a very quick read, but full lessons that leave the reader with something to chew on after completing each story. Author Panse also provides some beautiful sketches with each story, bringing to life the owls, crows, elephants, rabbits, et. beyond the words on the page. Some lessons bring practical wisdom of forgiveness, trust, and faith. Other lessons instill ideals of strategy, decision-making, and leadership. The practical nature of each story with the supposed heroes not always rising strong at the end, and the way in which the stories intertwine and are told from the perspective of a different narrator, create an engaging book. I am left wanting to go back to Parts 1 and 2.
