In November 2005, Sunni insurgents attacked a U.S. Marine squad en route to Haditha with an improvised explosive device (IED). One Marine died and two others were wounded. Within minutes, squad members killed 24 Iraqi civilians, including an elderly couple, four women and six children. It was the worst incident of its kind in the Iraq War. Thirteen months later, four officers and four enlisted men were accused of crimes ranging from dereliction of duty to murder. The legal proceedings dragged on for five years, longer than any in U.S. military history. The only conviction was that of an NCO who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor.Unlike other legal actions conducted during the 60-year history of the present military justice system, these proceedings were held mostly in secret. This book investigates the tactics adopted by Marine Corps commanders and the ineptness of the proceedings, which raise serious questions about the need for reform of the Code of Military Justice.

Mr. England was not there when this happened. How do I know, because I was there and I was one of the members that had to react to engage in a firefight just blocks away from the IED. I received a Purple Heart as well as 7 members of my squad as we engaged nearly 30 armed insurgents that were hunkered down in 3 separate houses. The reason why no one was charged is becuase they didn't commit any crimes. Like usual, the media and Time magazine attempted to make a story out of nothing and it back fired on them. If Mr. England's would like to experience real war instead of listening to false stories, I suggest he start patrolling going on patrols. When a firefight does break out, I'm sure he will do whatever he can to survive.

Documentary journalism at its best
By Marilyn R. Abbey
This is an important book, a dispassionate, scrupulously documented chronology of a battle-zone massacre perpetrated by a squad of U.S. Marines in Iraq in 2005. It is probably the most detailed account we will ever have of a blatant failure of military justice and quite possibly also of combat training.
The events, which dragged on over an unprecedented six years, have so many bizarre features that it’s impossible not to think in cliches, from Keystone Kops blunders to the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. Gross incompetence; seemingly capricious decisions on indictments, grants of immunity, promotions and reassignments; admitted coverups and lies; finger-pointing. It’s all there.
The truth about this massacre will never be known — in fact, there is no one reality — but when the definitive history of the inglorious Iraq War is finally written, the Haditha massacre will be right up there with Abu Graib and Blackwater. And those future historians will have to consult Meltdown in Haditha because Englade, who started his eight-year project favorably disposed toward the Marine Corps in which his father and uncle had served, had no axe to grind and maintained admirable journalistic detachment throughout his reporting.
Perhaps the most disturbing excuse given in testimony by many of the Marines directly involved in the “incident” is that they were doing what they’d been trained to do (Sgt. Frank Wuterich, who ordered and spearheaded the attacks, had never been in combat).
Recently, we’ve been reading of the possibly misguided delegation of authority to commanding officers in cases of sexual harassment. Englade indicates in his conclusions that it may be time to turn that same scrutiny on the military hierarchy in the handling of criminal cases.
Justice delayed is justice denied: That injunction has come down through centuries and cultures, and is explicit in the American concept of law. In this, as in the conduct of so many involved in the tragedy and travesty of Haditha, it seems we should start living our values as well as talking about them.
