Gavin is a man who has lost his faith in God.
During a periodic meeting with his lifelong friend and religious mentor, Dr. Faulkner Brickley, Gavin confesses that he is no longer a believer. Alarmed that his friend has lost the capacity to see that life can be extraordinary, the professor decides it’s time to reveal a secret. “We can either choose to use our talents or not to use them,” he tells Gavin before dramatically demonstrating to him that God has granted him with an amazing gift.
Meanwhile, Gavin runs into his old flame at a funeral. He brought Elizabeth Kashner into the faith, all those years ago. But in his state of grief following the death of his father, he had told Elizabeth he no longer wanted her in his life. Although their chance meeting stirs up old feelings, nothing much comes of it—until Elizabeth goes on a missionary trip to the Russian republic of Ingushetia.
When Elizabeth ends up being held hostage, Gavin offers to use his newfound talent to win her freedom. In the meantime, Elizabeth’s own plan of escape is to create a bond with one of her captors.
As a result of their adventures, lives are changed—in very surprising ways. And Gavin sees that life can be extraordinary. But is this enough to shake his disbelief?

Review
"Unexpected plot twists, including an uncanny chain of events, fast moving action, deception, danger, bold escape attempts, and miraculous intervention, all provide the reader with page turning entertainment, suspense, and thought provoking questions for in depth contemplation. On occasion I felt the plot; scenes and characters were incongruent and lacked certain cohesiveness; however in the final chapter the loose ends were tied together. C. L. Shaffer has written "The Link That Could Not Be Broken" with a twofold purpose: to remind those who feel disconnected, and are wavering in their faith, that God is still there. It is also written as a Christian apologetic action-drama to encourage readers to be open to exploring a meaningful dialog between those of the Christian faith, atheists, and those of other cultures, philosophies, and religions." -Richard R. Blake for Reader Views "I admire C.L. Shaffer for being so courageous as to write a book in which religion is so central to the plot. Overall, C.L. Shaffer handled religion well. Characters were written not only as passionate but also as compassionate. The book is fast-paced and eventful. In my opinion, it might have been too eventful. To me, it felt a little chaotic at times. Especially since there is so much mental and emotional turmoil surrounding the main characters, the supernatural elements and thriller-type action sequences seemed almost excessive. I think it is most likely to appeal to a Christian or religious-seeker readership. Additionally, it would probably be best received by readers who particularly enjoy fast-paced thrillers or young adult novels because of the eventful nature of the plot." -Onlinebookclub.org
From the Author
What is The Link That Could Not Be Broken about?A man who has broken his link to God. His life has become just the routine day-to-day. He's cut out all the extraordinary so that he doesn't feel any hurt, but with that comes not feeling any good or love. Something happens along the way, however, something incredible that begins to dissolve his numbness. What was the process like to write this book? The beginning came easily--the middle not so much. I certainly changed the trajectory of the story several times. I knew I needed some danger, but I was unsure where this danger was going to come from. At one point, I even thought about doing something with aliens, of all things. Then 9/11 happened and terrorism was at the forefront of my mind. I'd always had an interest in Russia so the combination of this with terrorism made Chechnya the obvious choice. Were you concerned about writing about a place you knew little about?Yes, I was worried about getting things wrong because really what do I know about Chechnya? Plus when I was researching there was not a lot of news coming out about the region. Photographs from the area were helpful. Travel blogs were helpful. What news articles were being generated were somewhat helpful but at times they contradicted each other on certain facts. When that happened I just had to say, "Okay, what is the most probable thing that could happen in this culture or in this situation?" You have to be a writer at that point. Even though I wanted to be as factual as I could about the culture, history, and region, Chechnya is really a backdrop. It's not the story. The spiritual journey of the characters is the story. What are the lessons in The Link?Links to people may become disconnected, and there is a lot of this happening in the book, but God is always there even when we no longer believe in Him. To a more controversial point, I tend to believe "once saved--always saved." It's obvious from the title that I am of that opinion, but at the end of the story, I allow the reader to decide for themselves. Why should people read this book?I think they'll enjoy it. It's entertaining. That was something I really aspired to do with this book. Not only was it going to be ministy-minded but I wanted it to be a book you would not fall asleep reading. It's not something for your bedside. I hope it keeps the reader up. I hope it gets them thinking. Why do you write?I love organizing my thoughts on a blank white screen. I loved writing assignments in school. Even though I put out a few that were pretty bad, I missed the process when I left college. I missed the researching and the arranging of information. A complex fictional plot can cause you to go through a similar process. You can write yourself into a corner and then have to write yourself out of it. I enjoy the challenge of that even though that is usually when a lot of prayers get said.

A Creative Challenge of Maintaining Faith
By DRM
Agree that it was confusing at times with changes of characters and venue, yet it was definitely evident that the author was sharing her belief that "once saved, always saved." Unique style and story line.. Creative. This was a free download provided for an honest review.

Very confusing at times, but good!
By Vickie @Vickie's Kitchen and Garden
The Link That Could Not be Broken is sit our modern day age. This book takes circumstances that you know could very well happen now and do in our time. The descriptions are very vivid and convincing in this action packed book.
Although a very interesting read, it did take me awhile to get used to the switching of characters. It seemed as though when I wanted to know more about one, the other was back in the game. This made it very confusing but eventually I knew enough about all characters to get immersed in the book.
This book reminds me to never refuse an offer to express your faith. Make sure you do, you never know who is listening.
This book was given to me by the author C.L. Schaffer in exchange for an honest review.

Does God Really Care About His Children?
By Judith A. Fritz
This is the first book I have read from this author. The young man has a devastating loss in the family that has him turning his back on God. Because of this hurt, he wants nothing to do with God. A college professor, who is also a close friend of the family, works with the young man with his non- beliefs and tries to get him to realize that God is still there for him. The young man wants nothing to do with God and soon goes on an excursion over seas in search of his close friend. He goes through s toon-packed trials and tribulations on this journey. Did a God dessert him? Is God's hook still in this young man? Judy Fritz
