From Publishers Weekly
Teen musicians Monty and Simon don't like each other, but because their siblings are getting married, Simon figures that they should learn to get along. They form an uneasy truce just long enough to play a new song at the wedding, but just when it seems like they'll be able to go their separate ways, a bomb explodes, killing the rest of the wedding party. Simon, whose only family has just been killed, and Monty, whose wealthy father may have something to do with the explosion, go on the lam. Soon they've been accused of planting the bomb themselves and there's no turning back. To pay the bills, they form a band and start performing at strip clubs and hooker bars, all the while trying to find out who really ended the wedding with a bang. This issue is all setup, leaving the mystery to be solved later. Monty and Simon are a likable pair, though the long blocks of their song lyrics are insipid. The plot twists and turns, taking the boys unexpected places; the art has manga characters, but with sharper lines that harken to a more Western style. This book skirts the deeper resonance of a story of redemption and settles for being light entertainment. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–The novel follows Monty and Simon, two rock musicians, as they try to make it big and get caught up in a murder scheme in the process. The story is full of plot twists and fresh dialogue. It is also exciting and humorous at times, and will definitely keep teens interested with its fair share of sex, drugs, violence, and drinking. The illustrations stay true to manga form, which doesn't always work, because the story is trying desperately to be American, but the art makes it seem Asian.–Scott La Counte, Anaheim Public Library, CA

alright.
By Harmony Lawler
As far as most original english language manga goes, this is pretty good.
The story is very interesting and is unique. With it's american feel, any manga fan would find it a nice read.
Also, the art is pretty easy on the eyes. I have no complaints. But for american manga, they are all overtoned. But is th least of any worries.
Sort of fast paced but makes up with the plot. One of the best OEL manga out there. Ranks up with Dramacon and RE:play.

For Slavery and Union: Benjamin Buckner and Kentucky Loyalties in the Civil War, by Patrick A. Lewis

Benjamin Forsythe Buckner (1836–1901) faced a dire choice as the flames of Civil War threatened his native Kentucky. As an ambitious Bluegrass aristocrat, he was sympathetic to fellow slave owners, but was also convinced that the Peculiar Institution could not survive a war for Southern independence. Defying the wishes of his Rebel fiancée and her powerful family―yet still hoping to impress them with his resolve, independence, and courage―Buckner joined the Twentieth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry in 1861 as a Union soldier. President Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 ultimately destroyed Buckner's faith in his cause, however, and he resigned his commission.

In For Slavery and Union, Patrick A. Lewis uses Benjamin Buckner's story to illuminate the origins and perspectives of Kentucky's conservative proslavery Unionists, and explain why this group eventually became a key force in repressing social and political change during the Reconstruction era and beyond. Free from the constraints and restrictions imposed on the former Confederate states, men like Buckner joined with other proslavery forces to work in the interest of the New South's brand of economic growth and racial control.

Other studies have explored how Kentucky cultivated a Confederate identity after the Civil War, but For Slavery and Union is the first major work to personify this transformation. Lewis's important book transcends biography to provide a deeply nuanced look at the history of the commonwealth in the nineteenth century and the development of the New South.

Review
"Benjamin Forsythe Buckner was a conservative proslavery Unionist who was for the Union because he thought slavery would be safest in the Union, and who never accepted emancipation as a Union war aim. This insightful book positions Patrick Lewis among the cutting-edge scholars who have punctured the mythology about Kentucky's benign slave system, harmonious social order, and enlightened political leadership."―Daniel W. Crofts, author of Reluctant Confederates: Upper South Unionists in the Secession Crisis.

"Patrick Lewis paints a splendid picture of pro-slavery Unionism in the form of Major Benjamin Buckner. His portrayal of the Kentucky planter gives texture, depth and nuance to an ideological position that has confounded historians for many years. This may be the first biography we have seen to capture the cultural and political center of Civil War-era Kentucky, including the state's embrace of a conservative Union in 1861 and its rejection of a transformed Union in 1865."―Aaron Astor, Maryville College, author of Rebels on the Border: Civil War, Emancipation and the Reconstruction of Kentucky and Missouri

"Patrick Lewis's splendid For Slavery and Union is a most welcome contribution to Civil War, Kentucky, and border state historical scholarship. Deeply researched and gracefully crafted, Lewis's book provides the best insights available into the conflicted ideological and social worlds of Benjamin Forsythe Buckner and like-minded proslavery unionists during the Civil War era. Better than any previous scholar, Lewis untangles the conundrum conservative and upwardly mobile white southerners confronted as the nation dissolved. They believed not only that unionism and slavery went hand and hand, but envisioned that secession signaled the death knell not only of the 'peculiar institution' but also of white southerners' much-boasted 'way of life,' a Weltanschauung predicated on white supremacy. Lewis's mature, richly interpretive study places Buckner's postwar life in the whirligig world of Jim Crow/New South Kentucky, a world he quietly embraced."―John David Smith, author of Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops

"On a fellow historian's tip, as part of a recent book project, I researched the letters of Benjamin Forsythe Buckner written to his fiancée. This revealing collection of Civil War documents offers the perspective of a Kentucky Union officer who resigned his military commission in 1863 specifically to protest the Emancipation Proclamation, long before his home state saw its slaves freed by wartime realities. Patrick A. Lewis has turned this small set of letters into a larger, more troubling story―the postwar transformation of the former loyal Bluegrass State into an unreconstructed southern state, accomplished by the defiant politics of racial hatred, war allegiance, and fictive memory."―Christopher Phillips, University of Cincinnati, author of The Civil War in the Border South

"Well-researched, well-argued, and well-written, For Slavery and Union is an exemplary study. Benjamin Buckner of Kentucky personifies the dilemma of the Upper South proslavery unionist, during and after the Civil War. Author Patrick Lewis ably portrays the trials, contradictions, and struggles of those who favored the union, but who also saw it as the best way to protect slavery. Once the conflict became one to end slavery, Buckner zealously joined blue and gray allies in protecting whiteness. By placing Buckner fully in the context of his times, Dr. Lewis reveals that the old unionist did not change, but rather the circumstances in the world around him did. To Benjamin Buckner, the best way to protect slavery was to keep the union together. He thus joined the Union cause as the Civil War began. But his opposition to emancipation brought about his resignation. Soon he joined his former enemies in trying to shape a postwar world that would replicate the prewar racial one. All this in well-told in a wonderful case study by Patrick Lewis. His well- researched and well-written work personifies the dilemmas faced by Upper South proslavery unionists, in war and in the fights that followed the peace"―James C. Klotter, State Historian of Kentucky and professor of history at Georgetown College

"Patrick Lewis has written and engaging and insightful portrait of a man who embodied the struggle many loyal whites in the Upper South endured during the Civil War era. His nuanced examination of Benjamin Buckner's outlook and choices elucidate the phenomenon of pro-slavery Unionism shared by many white Southerners. This is a biography that will deepen our understanding of an important but understudied wartime faction."―Anne Marshall, Missisippi State University

"Deeply researched and narrated with elegance and verve, For Slavery and Union is the story of a fascinating Kentuckian whose life mirrored the larger ordeal of the state in the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In Lewis' skillful hands, Benjamin F. Buckner's life becomes an account of loyalties divided but never fully reconciled, and of a proslavery Unionism that foundered in the face of emancipation. The result is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand why Kentucky sided with the Union in the Civil War―and then turned south to align with the former Confederates states in the decades beyond. A sobering but thoroughly enjoyable read."―Amy Murrell Taylor, University of Kentucky

"White Unionists in Kentucky, argues Patrick Lewis, fought with the Union for the benefit of slavery, not despite slavery. That one insight is the basis of a gracefully written, beautifully argued reinterpretation of Kentucky's experience in the Civil War era that also speaks to American political culture more generally. Even as the Civil War divided the nation, support for slavery and racial inequality flourished in both the Union and the Confederacy, suggesting how difficult it would be to find a resolution to the conflicts that led the nation to war."―Laura Edwards, author of A Legal History of the Civil War and Reconstruction: A Nation of Rights

A Must Read for any Serious Historian of the Civil War-era!
By Anthony P. Curtis
In a masterfully crafted narrative, Patrick Lewis weaves together, at first glance, two diametrically opposed forces—slavery and Union. Using the life of Kentuckian Benjamin F. Buckner, a conservative proslavery unionist, Lewis irrefutably argues that a majority of loyal, white Kentuckians were both proslavery and pro-Union. Lewis gives the reader great insight into the complexities of Civil War-era Kentucky, placing race and slavery at the heart of the narrative. The author explores the institution of slavery in Kentucky (particularly in the central bluegrass region) making the most compelling argument yet against the “border state myth of mild slavery.” His contribution further shows how Kentucky complicates the national narrative for future Civil War scholars, and how Kentuckians—both Union and Confederate—reunited after the war to further perpetuate a system of racial discrimination on the heels of slavery’s crumbling foundation. This is an engaging, readable book for all levels—and a must read for any serious historian of the Civil War.

Mea Culpa: Lessons on Law and Regret from U.S. History, by Steven W. Bender

In Mea Culpa, Steven W. Bender examines how the United States’ collective shame about its past has shaped the evolution of law and behavior. We regret slavery and segregationist Jim Crow laws. We eventually apologize, while ignoring other oppressions, and our legal response to regret often fails to be transformative for the affected groups. By examining policies and practices that have affected the lives of groups that have been historically marginalized and oppressed, Bender is able to draw persuasive connections between shame and its eventual legal manifestations. Analyzing the United States’ historical response to its own atrocities, Bender identifies and develops a definitive moral compass that guides us away from the policies and practices that lead to societal regret.

Mea Culpa challenges its readers. In a different era, might we have been slave owners or proprietors of a racially segregated establishment? It’s easy to judge immorality in the hindsight of history, but what current practices and policies will later generations regret?

More than a historical survey, this volume offers a framework for resolving some of the most contentious social problems of our time. Drawing on his background as a legal scholar, Bender tackles immigration, the death penalty, the war on terror, reproductive rights, welfare, wage inequity, homelessness, mass incarceration, and same-sex marriage. Ultimately, he argues, it is the dehumanization of human beings that allows for practices to occur that will later be marked as regrettable. And all of us have a stake in standing on the side of history that resists dehumanization.

Review
"The book challenges readers to ask if we are as enlightened as we think we are."-The Seattle Times

"Bender is a prolific author-activist whose work always commands a reading. One is rewarded for doing so because of the scope and complexity of Bender’s thought as well as his gift for prose.  That he speaks and writes credibly in so many different conversations enhances the contribution of his work. . . . One need not be a natural law doctrinaire to recognize that law, jurisprudence, and morals have more than an accidental relationship. [Bender] zeroes in on this and shows precisely why this matters."-John Shuford,Director of the Institute for Hate Studies, Gonzaga University

"A fascinating book that explores how American government has come to adopt policies that it regards in hindsight with great regret. Bender does a superb job of exploring both historical and current regrettable decisions and shows that they are all based on dehumanizing others. He offers a path forward based on a law founded on compassion. Through powerful examples and clear writing, Bender has written a book that is profound in its observations and conclusions and that deserves a wide readership."-Erwin Chemerinsky,Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, University of California, Irvine

"Bender articulates a bold challenge to those who value inclusive democracy: confront dehumanizing policies and media images with individual moral courage and collective compassion. Mea Culpa is an energizing elixir to revive our commitment to a broad definition of community and thus to avoid the sorrow of personal regret and the tragedy of national regret."-Hazel Weiser, former executive director, Society of American Law Teachers

"Steven W. Bender’s Mea Culpa provoked deep sorrow and profound anger in me, as it will in most thoughtful readers. Professor Bender, one of the more nuanced listeners writing in the fields of immigration narratives and the codification of hate, has produced one of the more interesting books I have read in some time, paradoxically both troubling and hopeful. Of course, the many depredations he chronicles—examples of sin verguenza, or shamelessness—are dismaying, and have caused great harm to the stigmatized groups and the body politic, but he also notes that the deep shaming of past mistakes has often led to personal and official expressions of genuine regret, reparations, and reconciliation. He is no Pangloss, but his transformative work is ultimately uplifting, despite its documenting such hateful and spirit-murdering narratives."-Michael A. Olivas,William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law, University of Houston Law Center

"Bender, through the prism of regret for policies enacted as a result of dehumanization of particular groups, presents an admirable intersectional synthesis of current and past legal marginalization."-Choice

I am excited about using Mea Culpa for teaching an undergraduate course this coming fall. It is quite topical, and I find that it is perfect for teaching a range of introductory subjects related to U.S. History and Comparative Ethnic Studies. It also serves as a supplementary text for upper-level courses that deal with intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and citizenship as it provides the historical and legal context for the institutional oppression of people of color, women, gays and lesbians, undocumented workers, and the homeless. Bender writes with a voice of compassion that easily strikes an empathetic chord with my students that helps them want to become active players in the transformation of social injustices.

And the drama continues
By deucetokki
It seems like in Volume 2 of Click, the characters' true personalities are slowly starting to be revealed. We realize the once seemingly innocent Heewon is actually an overtly obsessive and brutally violent bully. And Taehyun, who seemed to be a lazy know-nothing punkster, turns out to be a genius in the underground financial world! Of course these revelations become material for more drama in Joonha's (the main character) life. Then even more drama occurs when Joonha's childhood friend Jinhoo FINALLY returns to the series.

This volume was entertaining because of the ambiguity of Joonha's sex. Sometimes she would act like a girl, but other times she would act like a guy. It's definitely funny seeing the other characters getting confused and alluding to the eventual (but not in this volume) revelation of Joonha's "special case."

Mental Health in the War on Terror: Culture, Science, and Statecraft, by Neil Krishan Aggarwal

Neil Krishan Aggarwal's timely study finds that mental-health and biomedical professionals have created new forms of knowledge and practice in their desire to understand and fight terrorism. In the process, the state has used psychiatrists and psychologists to furnish knowledge on undesirable populations, and psychiatrists and psychologists have protected state interests.

Professional interpretation, like all interpretations, is subject to cultural forces. Drawing on cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology, Aggarwal analyzes the transformation of definitions for normal and abnormal behavior in a vast array of sources: government documents, professional bioethical debates, legal motions and opinions, psychiatric and psychological scholarship, media publications, and policy briefs. Critical themes emerge on the use of mental health in awarding or denying disability to returning veterans, characterizing the confinement of Guantánamo detainees, contextualizing the actions of suicide bombers, portraying Muslim and Arab populations in psychiatric and psychological scholarship, illustrating bioethical issues in the treatment of detainees, and supplying the knowledge and practice to deradicalize terrorists. Throughout, Aggarwal explores this fascinating, troublesome transformation of mental-health science into a potential instrument of counterterrorism.

Review

Very few people are able to synthesize the disciplines of anthropology, mental health, cultural studies, political theory, religious studies, bioethics, and forensics in the way Neil Krishan Aggarwal does in this book. He offers a balanced and insightful account of the challenges of forensic psychiatry in assessing and managing terrorism suspects.

(Hamada Hamid, Yale University)

Using concrete clinical cases to anchor sophisticated and thought-provoking analysis, Aggarwal demonstrates that not only ethics but also the very nature of clinical knowledge and practice are at issue in the use, and especially misuse, of mental-health categories in the War on Terror. His book brings a new level of critical self-reflection to the psychology of terrorism.

(James W. Jones, author of Blood That Cries Out from the Earth: The Psychology of Religious Terrorism)

An indispensable and astute account of the insidious cultural manifestations emerging from the justifying framework that is the War on Terror. In light of the increasingly intolerable actions permissible through deference to notions of national security, Aggarwal's review of bioethics is crucial to understanding the evolution, through politicization, of approaches to mental health. Aggarwal's review of orientalist positions within psychotherapy literature, which underpin this creeping securitization of mental health, reinforces the impact of culturally laden views on Islam and Muslims. An essential read.

(Orla Lynch, Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, University of St Andrews)

Aggarwal has written a theoretically sophisticated, multisided exploration of how the War on Terror and mental health are powerfully connected through the 'culture' of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, hospitals, courts, the military, and Islam. His argument is that science, religion, and moral experience are not just infiltrated with cultural meanings but come to create new cultural forms such as 'trauma,' forensic processes, and 'terrorism,' which in turn remake the world. An important achievement.

(Arthur Kleinman, Harvard University)

A clear and impassioned discussion of the presence of psychiatrists and mental-health knowledge practices in the micro-functioning of the War on Terror and the impact of each on the other. The book is a compelling portrayal of the way that medicine and its scientific languages and knowledge structures are able to move through and across political domains, being put to use to challenge and undo the very power structures they are meant to serve. Engaging, rigorous, and beautifully written.

(Sarah Pinto, Tufts University)

In this impressive and provocative volume, Aggarwal reveals many hidden failings of dominant social and political thought on radicalization and terrorism. Bioethics, arabic science, and symptoms in Guantanamo detainees are all debated to present an alternative, rounded, and compelling approach that includes medicine and cultural psychiatry as essential actors.

(Kamaldeep Bhui, Queen Mary University of London)

The questions it poses are valuable, difficult, and without easy answers – for clinicians, military leaders, or even civilians, all of whom must live with a medical culture deeply marked by the war on terror.

(Publishers Weekly)

Should be required reading for psychiatrists and mental health professionals interested in the psychology of Islamist terrorism... It is an exemplar of the manner in which the lens of transcultural psychiatry can clarify our perspective...

(Psychiatric Services)

Often times it reads more like an academic dissertation than a nonfiction book
By booksunderfive
As a psychologist I was eager to read Aggarwal's treatise on Mental Health and the war on terror. My profession had dishonored itself when psychologists and even the American Psychological Association (or at least a small group from there with questionable loyalties) became intimately involved with the enhanced interrogation of detainees. While Aggarwal does discuss this in Chapter two, he does not delve as deeply into how the psychologists (who personally profited from their contribution) strayed from the ethical constraints of our profession> Nor does he provide much that is new about what various healthcare professionals have done to cooperate with the military and circumvent research based knowledge and - operating outside the the scope of their expertise - meanwhile lending their imprimatur to a dubious endeavor that had no factual basis in either the mental health culture of the culture of the intelligence community.

What Aggarwal does accomplish is a very through, and sometimes exhaustive discussion of cultural psychiatry, attempting to clarify the recursive and competing interests of the two competing clashing agendas. His writing can at times be ponderous as his paragraphs can go on forever. Often times it reads more like an academic dissertation than a nonfiction book, but his use of clinical cases does help to make it more enjoyable t read, Nevertheless a good deep editor would have been helpful to make his writing style more accessible, and to cut down the details to a more manageable level.

I can recommend this is a worthy read for those interested in cultural psychiatry as an academic discipline, but you should be aware that the war on terror and mental health are both explored less as ethical dilemmas and more as a point counterpoint discussion about their dialectical impact on the questions he raises. This failure to delve deeper makes it seem longer than it needs to be, but a good first attempt at a non-fiction book.

From the Back Cover

Without a doubt the most important of Shakespeare's nondramatic works, the sonnets have engendered reams of scholarly disputation as to the identity of "the dark lady" and the "lovely boy" to whom the vast majority are addressed. Controversy has also long simmered over the full name of the "W.H." of the dedication. What is not in dispute is the superior quality of these lyrics, which rank among the finest sonnets ever written—in any language.
Overt 150 poems deal with love, friendship, the tyranny of time, beauty's evanescence in power, death, and other themes in language unsurpassed in power, precision, and beauty. Now this inexpensive Dover edition enables any lover of poetry or fine literature to have this exquisite verse in his or her personal library. A brief glossary illuminates a number of archaic terms.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

From AudioFile
The Complete Sonnets is a handy resource for lovers of these poems. Recorded in consecutive order, with each actor reading in shifts of one or two sonnets, this production really does let the poem, in this case, be the thing. There's not much introduction before each sonnet besides the announcement of the next number. While it's nice to hear different readers deliver the poems, the transitions are, on occasion, jarring; one just settles into the timbre of a voice only to have it suddenly altered. Overall, the collection is a great resource and would make an excellent gift for a Shakespeare fan. R.A.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Perfect - if you want only the bare bones
By Bill R. Moore
The Dover Thrift Edition of the Complete Sonnets is exactly that: the complete sonnets, and nothing more. Though often scorned by literary snobs, the entire Dover series does fulfill one very useful function: it provides cheap, easy-to-read, and widely-available versions of literary classics. What you get, in this case, are all of Shakespeare's sonnets (undisputably some of the greatest poems ever written and a true treasure of English literature; obviously, a review of any edition of these poems will inevitably focus not upon the work itself, which is beyond repute, but, rather, on the individual edition as presented) -- and nothing else. Much more expansive (and expensive) versions are available, featuring an introduction to the sonnets with background information, notes and annotations, a handy list of definitions for archaic and obscure Elizabethian words -- and, more than likely, at least one pretentious individual interpretation of the work. Obviously, if one is looking to study Shakespeare, really go in-depth into the sonnets for scholarly or academic purposes, then one should look into one of the editions just described. If you just want a copy of the sonnets without desiring to spend too much money, you don't need or don't want all of those extras, or you simply want to impress incredulous people by owning a set of Shakespeare's sonnets, however, then you could do worse than picking up this inexpensive little book.

Good, portable edition
By Mary Jane Chaffee
A colleague advised that I assign my college students this edition, and I am glad she did. Rather than reading the few anthologized works together with some handouts, students now own the entire set. For anyone not familiar with Shakespeare's 154 sonnets, this gives an affordable and portable version. For anyone familiar with the works, this book offers them in a beautifully light, compressed format that itself enhances rereading and re-interpretation. The book begins with a helpful one-page background on the sonnet form and on Shakespeare's collection, and ends with an also-helpful alphabetical list of first lines. The two-page glossary of terms at the end may be too little, too late, but the drawbacks of Dover's edition--its lack of notes and its use of roman numerals to number the poems--pale compared with the book's availability. As an enthusiast myself--someone who studied at the Shakespeare Institute, England, writing a 310-page thesis on the Bard--I feel grateful to be able to help others to such an inexpensive and pleasant way to own and explore Shakespeare's entire collection of sonnets. Because I could skim the poems in sequence so quickly and easily with this edition, the interrelationships among Sonnets 113, 114, 115, and the famous 116, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds," for example, struck me in a new way as I reread them in this little book. A highly- recommended edition.

Left me lost - till I got a better edition
By Steve in Chicago
My English major friends kept raving about the sonnets, so I finally decided to spend a buck to get this least expensive edition. It was kind of interesting. I could tell that Shakespeare was really intense about his issues - but I was lost as to why everybody was so crazy about them. I also did not like having paper that was so thin that my highlighting and notes went right through to ruin the other side of the page :(
Finally I spent another buck to get an (almost as inexpensive) edition (used) - the Signet edition edited by Burto. That helped a lot - with definitions of terms and hints about lots of secret relationships possibly there for those who would dig further. At last I'm starting to figure out why this guy is considered so awesome. To really get an appreciation of Shake's heart and mind, beginners like me really need more than just the poems.
Now I'm borrowing an English major's copy of Dr. Vendler's edition (Art of Shakespeare's Sonnets). It's pretty heady, so I'm just trying to read her introduction. Whew! I haven't tested out all her theories, but is so much incredible care and complexity going on behind the scenes in these poems - it's no wonder people are still boggled after 400 years.
Truly amazing - but unless you're an English major I wouldn't recommend bothering with this doubtful dollar deed. Getting a copy of the Signet or Folger Library editions will make beginners much happier.

From Booklist
The professional habits of lawyers can isolate them, driving them to drink or even to suicide. An ex-lawyer turned psychologist, Sells knows the mentality that brings distressed barristers into his office and writes about it in an almost spiritual way without producing anything like the ethereal, God-loves-me idiocy that afflicts pop-psych titles. No case narratives, no self-inventories, not even much psychiatric analysis: Sells omits these in favor of pertinent generalizations about the law, and the adversarial and hierarchical character of its practice, that can sap a lawyer's soul. Diction is a classic example. Admonished to craft drum-tight language, Sells says that lawyers reduce words to a "pseudo-mathematics" that is the death of imagination. On he goes with the field's other traits (objectivity, proceduralitis) that spill into nonwork life, delivering experienced insight for the new lawyer. Fine for the career shelf and as a supplement for law courses. Gilbert Taylor

About the Author
Benjamin Sells, a former practicing attorney and psychotherapist, is now retired and living in Riverside, Illinois.

It identifies a long needed soulful review of the Law's soul
By A Customer
A timely contribution to the Law. Without soul we are nothing. The pain and loss many lawyers are confronting and the open hostility in the law by consumers has to change. This work is a start of a journey to renew the law's soul. Best Practice may be the bridge between the lawyer and the consumer thereby helping to heal the soul of the law? I would welcome comment on this point.

The other review here is for the Kindle version. Mine is for the book.

The book is an in-depth, political and economic analysis of the laws and government of the ancient hebrews as recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible. The writing style is a bit flowery and archaic at times, but understandably so since most the the chapters are converted from a lecture series given around the time of Abraham Lincoln.

The book is insightful and original, and touches themes that are relevant to any issue of the right way to order the laws and customs of a society.

warning concerning wines' download
By John Saggio
For those thinking about purchasing the kindle version of E. C. Wines' THE LAWS OF THE ANCIENT HEBREWS, BEWARE! This book is a classic and worth having in your kindle library. However, the kindle version of the text is so small one cannot read it even if you use the zoom mechanism. A problem exists, and until it is corrected, it should not be purchased. Also, it is indicated that the text can be listened to, but this is inaccurate since when attempting to do so, the message indicates it is not possible. This is a great book, but needs to be corrected before it is put on sale.

Guantánamo Diary, by Mohamedou Ould Slahi

An unprecedented international publishing event: the first and only diary written by a still-imprisoned Guantánamo detainee.

Since 2002, Mohamedou Slahi has been imprisoned at the detention camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. In all these years, the United States has never charged him with a crime. A federal judge ordered his release in March 2010, but the U.S. government fought that decision, and there is no sign that the United States plans to let him go.

Three years into his captivity Slahi began a diary, recounting his life before he disappeared into U.S. custody, "his endless world tour" of imprisonment and interrogation, and his daily life as a Guantánamo prisoner. His diary is not merely a vivid record of a miscarriage of justice, but a deeply personal memoir---terrifying, darkly humorous, and surprisingly gracious. Published now for the first time, GUANTÁNAMO DIARY is a document of immense historical importance and a riveting and profoundly revealing read.

Review
"A longtime captive has written the most profound and disturbing account yet of what it's like to be collateral damage in the war against terror."―Mark Danner, NYTBR, & Editors' Choice

"Slahi is a fluent, engaging and at times eloquent writer, even in his fourth language, English....Slahi's book offers a first-person account of the experience of torture. For that reason alone, the book is necessary reading for those seeking to understand the dangers that Guantánamo's continued existence poses to Americans in the world."
―Deborah Pearlstein, Washington Post

"A riveting new book has emerged from one of the most contentious places in the world, and the U.S. government doesn't want you to read it....You don't have to be convinced of Slahi's innocence to be appalled by the incidents he describes."―Kevin Canfield, San Francisco Chronicle

"Guantánamo Diary will leave you shell-shocked."
―Vanity Fair

"Slahi emerges from the pages of his diary...as a curious and generous personality, observant, witty and devout, but by no means fanatical....Guantánamo Diary forces us to consider why the United States has set aside the cherished idea that a timely trial is the best way to determine who deserves to be in prison."―Scott Shane, New York Times

"An historical watershed and a literary triumph....The diary is as close as most of us will ever get to understanding the living hell this man--who has never been charged with a crime, and whom a judge ordered released in 2010--continues to suffer."―Elias Isquith, Salon

"Everyone should read Guantánamo Diary....Just by virtue of having been written inside Guantánamo, Slahi's book would be a triumph of humanity over chaos. But Guantánamo Diary turns out to be especially human. Slahi doesn't just humanize himself; he also humanizes his guards and interrogators. That's not to say that he excuses them. Just the opposite: he presents them as complex individuals who know kindness from cruelty and right from wrong."
―Joshua Rothman, The New Yorker

"The tragedy of Slahi's memoir is not just his grave abuse at the hands of U.S. officials. It is that....Slahi's account of life--if it can be called that--at Guantánamo is not the exception. It is the rule, and it continues today."
―Alka Pradhan, Reuters

"Guantánamo Diary stands as perhaps the most human depiction of an entire post-9/11 system."
―Omar El Akkad, Globe and Mail

"Literary history was made today with the publication of the first-ever book by a still-imprisoned Guantánamo detainee....As astonishing as the scope of the abuse is Slahi's enduring warmth, even for his torturers and jailers."―Noa Yachot, Huffington Post

"A vision of hell, beyond Orwell, beyond Kafka: perpetual torture prescribed by the mad doctors of Washington."―John le Carré

"This is an incredible document, and a hell of a story."―Steve Kroft, correspondent for 60 Minutes

"Anyone who reads Guantanamo Diary---and every American with a shred of conscience should do so, now---will be ashamed and appalled. Mohamedou Ould Slahi's demand for simple justice should be our call to action. Because what's at stake in this case is not just the fate of one man who managed, against all odds, to tell his story, but the future of our democracy."―Glenn Greenwald, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State

"Here, finally, is the disturbing and stirring story the United States government tried for years to conceal. Mohamedou Ould Slahi's ordeal shocks the conscience, to be sure. But on display in these pages is something much deeper as well: an enduring faith in our common humanity, and in the power of truth to leap prison walls and bridge divides. With devastating clarity and considerable wit, Guantánamo Diary reminds us why we call certain things human rights."―Anthony Romero, Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union

"Once considered such a high-value detainee that former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld designated him for 'special interrogation techniques'....Slahi had been subjected to sleep deprivation, exposed to extremes of heat and cold, moved around the base blindfolded, and at one point taken into the bay on a boat and threatened with death....Slahi faces no criminal charges."―Carol Rosenberg, Miami Herald

About the Author
Mohamedou Slahi was born in a small town in Mauritania in 1970. He won a scholarship to attend college in Germany and worked there for several years as an engineer. He returned to Mauritania in 2000. The following year, at the behest of the United States, he was detained by Mauritanian authorities and rendered to a prison in Jordan; later he was rendered again, first to Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, and finally, on August 5, 2002, to the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where he was subjected to severe torture. In 2010, a federal judge ordered him immediately released, but the government appealed that decision. The U.S. government has never charged him with a crime. He remains imprisoned in Guantánamo.

Larry Siems is a writer and human rights activist and for many years directed the Freedom to Write program at PEN American Center. He is the author, most recently, of The Torture Report: What the Documents Say About America's Post-9/11 Torture Program. He lives in New York.

The human face of Guantanamo and American torture
By C. Olson
This book is an incredible, first-person story about imprisonment, torture, and life in the secret world of Guantanamo. It is complete with government redaction bars as well as footnotes tying the narrative to declassified documents. Especially interesting are the human relationships formed with guards and interrogators throughout Slahi’s ordeal. Sadly, this tale illustrates the plight of many other Gitmo prisoners.

A little of Slahi’s story: he’s from Mauritania and when he was 18 went to college in Germany on a scholarship. In the early 1990s, he interrupted his studies to fight with al-Qaeda units against the communist government in Afghanistan (the U.S. supported anti-communist forces). He returned to Germany a few years later and got his degree. In November 2001 he went to his local police station in Mauritania to answer questions about suspected involvement in a terrorist plot – he’s been a prisoner ever since but never charged with a crime. He was rendered by the CIA to Jordan and Afghanistan for more interrogation before being sent to Guantanamo in 2002.

Slahi was one of two so-called “Special Projects” whose treatment Donald Rumsfeld personally approved – treatment that included extreme isolation, sleep deprivation, sexual molestation, frigid rooms, stress positions, and death threats against both Slahi and his mother. Military prosecutors have said that they declined to prosecute him because he was tortured or because they could simply not find anything to charge him with.

In 2010, a federal district court judge ordered him released, but the Obama administration successfully appealed and the case was sent back to the district court with instructions to use looser standards to decide whether someone can be held. And so Slahi remains locked up indefinitely, 13 years and counting -- for doing NOTHING.

If you want to try to do something about it, there's a petition to send him home at https://www.aclu.org/free-slahi

An Unlikely Review, A Story Worth Reading
By K. Groh
I am probably the least likely person to write a review for this book. But after listening to the editor/author, Larry Siems, on NPR, I knew I had to read it. I am not a highly political person. I am not great with history. I don't understand all the nuances of the military. I also understand that there are people, foreigners, who would love nothing better than to blow up our country and wouldn't feel any remorse. However, the story of Mohamedou is so outlandish that it is hard to believe that we, as Americans, would be okay with this kind of treatment. Let's just say that one of our citizens was held captive (and I'm not naive enough to think that it doesn't still happen) under these conditions in another country for 13+ years, we would be up in arms. The injustice of it all would be all over the news. We are a better country than that. We are morally sensitive on so many issues that it is hard to believe we stoop so low in this regard. So why are we allowed to treat a prisoner this way? Primarily, I am so upset that he has never been charged. That there has been no obvious evidence all this time that actually links him to a terrorist activity. He was pulled from his family and has been brutally and unjustly treated for years.

Again, I am not so naive that I don't think torture is going on for the sake of garnering information to protect our citizens. Some is expected and we tend to look the other way, the same way that we don't want to know about how our animals are slaughtered for consumption. I don't necessarily agree with it and it goes against the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of war. As quoted in the introduction, "Prisoners must at all times be humanly treated. Any unlawful act or omission by the Detaining Power causing death or seriously endangering the health of a prisoner of war in custody will be prohibited, and will be regarded as a serious breach of the present Convention..."

The Geneva Convention is violated almost daily with Mohamedou and many of his fellow prisoners. While I can't comment on the innocence of the others since they are not sharing their story, I can say that Mohamedou was granted a release by a federal judge 5 years ago and has yet to be released or even charged with a crime.

So getting on to the story. Larry Siems has written a nice introduction. He has tried very hard to organize the information so that we have as much history and detail as possible. Mohamedou has also done a wonderful job of recounting the events of his life, sometimes in gruesome but not gratuitous detail. But the story is redacted, sometimes for three pages at a time, which makes for some stilted reading. Additionally, it jumps around in the timeline. After reading for a bit, it does get a little easier to stay on top of it but the redactions can be really frustrating at times.

Mohamedou has a wonderful way of looking at things. He is a prisoner for no apparent reason. He is beaten, subjected to extreme temperatures, restraints, deprivation, seclusion and extreme isolation, interrogated for days, months, and years, and had other atrocities beyond imagination. But he looks for the positive things in his days. Being forced to sit blindfolded next to another prisoner which was comforting just because he was touching another human being. The occasional guard or interrogator with a bit more of a conscience, ones who treat him with a little more respect and humanity. The ability to have a conversation with anyone. He is, by his account, a decent, intelligent man who was just trying to live a normal life when he was suspected of being involved in the Millennium Plot.

This is a hard read at times but Mohamedou presents it in such a way that he does not glorify or exaggerate. It is worth a read for us to open our eyes to the horrors of Guantanamo and probably many other prisons, including some housing Americans, under our care. We should be ashamed of the treatment of Mohamedou.

Prisoner #760
By Sarah S. Forth
Mohamedou Ould Slahi has been prisoner #760 at Guantánamo Bay military prison since 2002.

In 2001, at the behest of U.S. authorities, he was arrested --or kidnapped, depending on how you see it--in his native Mauritania, on the West coast of Africa, and secretly taken to a "black site" in Jordon where he was interrogated for eight months, then flown to Cuba.

At Guantanamo, military intelligence officers and guards subjected him to "special treatment," a protocol personally approved by then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. This included 24-hour-a-day interrogation, beatings, sexual abuse, extended periods of sleep deprivation and enforced stress positions, withholding of food and medical care, and isolation so complete he did not know if it were day or night. His guards wore masks and the International Red Cross was prevented from meeting with him.

Slahi's transgression?

None.

U.S. authorities were unable to find any crime with which they could charge him. In 2010, a federal judge ordered Slahi released.

Our government appealed this decision and Slahi remains, to this day, incarcerated at Gitmo.

You are excused for imagining Slahi's memoir would be filled with bitterness and invective. It is not.

In remarkably readable colloquial English--Slahi's fourth language, which he taught himself in prison--this young, pious Muslim details his treatment with poignancy and dark humor.

If anything, he under-reports the brutality, providing a just-the-facts description. Even so, readers will get a good sense of the day-to-day brutality, the nitty-gritty that news reporting cannot convey.

Where guards are kind, he says so. And where the U.S., CIA and FBI are stupid and cruel, he also says so.

Reading Guantanamo Diary, you realize that you are in the presence of an extraordinarily decent human being.

Slahi finished his hand-written manuscript in 2005. We have the published form--redacted, often clumsily, by military censors--because Slahi's attorneys fought for seven years to have it released. Larry Siems, author and human rights activist, edited the manuscript with a light hand, preferring direct impressions of Slahi to a tidy chronological tale. He did yeoman's work digging through public records and news reports in order to augment redacted passages with copious footnotes.

The ACLU is leading a campaign to free Mohamedou Slahi. You can find out more at [...]
