About the Author

THOMAS F. GOLDMAN, JD, is Professor Emeritus of Bucks County Community College, where he was a Professor of Law and Management and Director of the Center for Legal Studies and the Paralegal Studies Program. A former member of the Paralegal Studies Advisory Board and mentor at Thomas Edison State College, where he developed the Advanced Litigation Support and Technology Certificate Program in the School of Professional Studies. A founding advisory board member of the American University of Phnom Phen, he created the legal studies curriculm. He is an author of textbooks in paralegal studies and technology, including The Paralegal Professional, Fourth Edition; Accounting and Taxation for Paralegals; Civil Litigation: Process and Procedures, Third Edition; SmartDraw: A Hands-On Tutorial and Guide; Litigation Practice: E-Discovery and Technology; and AbacusLaw: A Hands-On Tutorial and Guide.

An accounting and economics graduate of Boston University and of Temple University School of Law, Professor Goldman has an active international law, technology law, and litigation practice. He has worked extensively with paralegals and received the award of the Legal Support Staff Guild. He was elected the Legal Secretaries Association Boss of the Year for his contribution to cooperative education by encouraging the use of paralegals and legal assistants in law offices. He also received the Bucks County Community College Alumni Association Professional Achievement Award. He has been an educational consultant on technology to educational institutions and major corporations and a frequent speaker and lecturer on educational, legal, and technology issues.

Great book! It's easy to read and has a great deal of information.

It's a course-required book, so I had to get it. Since its more of a introductory type of class I decided to rent it instead. It's pretty easy to read and has a great deal of up to date information in the legal industry. Technology has definitely evolved for the legal industry and it's only going to get better and more advance.

Wonderfully gothic romantic suspense

This is an early Rebecca York, from the 43 Light Street series.

The Story:
Film director Jessica Adams is embarked on the project of a lifetime: she's put her reputation and her savings on the line to make a movie of reclusive author Matthew Griffon's bestselling vampire horror novel Midnight Kiss.

Almost from the start, the project has been plagued by problems--her production manager falls down broken steps in the spooky old mansion where they'll be filming, and Jessica has heard a vampire calling her. She chalks it up to nightmares until a dead body is found in her car--exsanguinated--and they move the cast and crew out to the mansion, where they discover that she's not the only one hearing things... then the bridge floods, the phones go out, and they're all trapped like they're in an Agatha Christie mystery, with everyone a suspect.

Also from the start, Jessica and Matthew have been drawn to each other. But Matthew has demons of his own and is determined not to get close to anyone.

The Good:
The tension builds through the story, each event in both the mystery plot and the romance plot adding to it.

We learn about both Jessica's and Matthew's pasts gradually and naturally, and the unfolding of their histories gives the reader insight into their motivations and serves to add to the increase of tension.

Even the secondary characters are interesting and believable. One small detail that really added to their believability and the general setting is that the film people related things to movies fairly often, rather than a more general mix of pop culture references from movies, books, TV, etc.

The Bad:
Some of the characters were a little too credulous to be believable.

The Verdict:
It's a wonderfully gothic romantic suspense.
I've been collecting Rebecca York's backlist. I still have quite a few to go (she's written over 100 books!), and I'm looking forward to them--she's one of my guaranteed good reads.

Helpful advice to a beginning trustee

This book appears to be self printed when someone orders it. It had its share of typographical errors.
Pros:
It was full of useful advice for a novice trustee of a trust created through a will as part of an estate plan. It explained fiduciary concepts in an easy to understand way. The book contained many useful and interesting to read examples of situations a trustee may easily encounter while serving as a trustee. I highly recommend it if you are new to the role of trustee of funds or assets of another. The information it contains certainly would not replace a personal lawyer's opinion when questions arise as trusts are state specific as to laws, but it was certainly helpful to me to know what I could possibly expect down the road.

Great Series for Everyone

This volume is halfway through the series (there are only 9 volumes total) and it is as addictive as the first. The storyline is complex and well thought out without being confusing. The author does a great job explaining everything plus the artwork is gorgeous. This series has action, comedy, romance, revenge, suspense, true love..it's perfect! I can't think of anything that this story is missing.

About the Author

Jim Bainbridge is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has been an active member of the California Bar for more than 30 years. He is a licensed California real estate broker, and a past recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate studies in mathematics at UC Berkeley. He is the author numerous works that have been published in more than 50 journals in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands.

Jim Bainbridge is also a member of the Real Estate Educators Association (REEA) and has received recognition as a Certified Distance Education Instructor by IDECC, which is a function of the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials.

Worked for me!

I took the online ProSchools course and learned absolutely nothing. I bought this book and the practice exams book and studied it for a month, took the actual PSI practice exam ($20) then took my exams. I passed both the state and the national Real Estate exams on the first try. Worked for me! My only suggestion is that they should work on the math computation section for clarity and usefulness.

Dan Busby is a certified public accountant with a Masters degree in business from Emporia State University. He has worked as controller of a university medical center, partner-founder of a CPA firm, and chief financial officer for a religious denomination. He currently serves as the president with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, Washington, D.C, and is he coauthor of The Christian's Guide to Worry-Free Money Management.

John Van Drunen is an attorney and a certified public accountant with a Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law and accounting degree from Anderson University. He has devoted much of his time to working in tax-exempt tax policy and other nonprofit related matters. The Voluminous Laws and Regulations Are Mind-boggling

Most readers of my book reviews either work or volunteer for nonprofits or churches, or serve on their boards. The responsibilities you carry are abundant, even staggering. And you don't want to mess up--especially in the tax or financial area. You don't want to be on the front page of the "Wall Street Journal" or "Christianity Today."

So...just in time, the 24th annual edition of the "Zondervan 2015 Church and Nonprofit Tax & Financial Guide (for 2014 returns)" is available. According to ECFA President Dan Busby, CPA, along with co-authors J. Michael Martin, JD, and John Van Drunen, JD, CPA, "last year brought a fresh round of tax changes that are integrated throughout the text. The voluminous laws and regulations that apply to churches and other nonprofits are mind-boggling."

They add, "This guide challenges those who lead these organizations not just to meet the minimum requirements of the law or to meet fundamental ethical levels but to strive for levels of integrity far behind the basics."

"All churches are religious organizations, but not all religious organizations are churches," note the authors. They list 14 criteria the IRS generally applies when deciding whether a religious organization can qualify as a "church" and benefit from tax exemption. While exempt churches are not required to file IRS Form 990 each year, they must file Form 990-T for unrelated business income, if applicable.

In the chapter on financial records and reporting, the authors write, "Understanding the terminology of outcomes measurement is fundamental." What percentage of our staff, board and volunteers could adequately define these four measurement terms: Inputs, Program, Output and Outcome?

A Must Read

For those of you looking for a good summer read to take to the beach, or just a great book to snuggle up with on a rainy day, I highly recommend opening up the pages of Asylum Denied. It is both informative and inspiring as it tells the story of David Kenney Ngaruri, the political asylee who struggled to stay in America. Although the book is currently being passed around law schools, as the new go-to-guide for asylum law, I am sure it will not be long before it makes the bestseller stands at nation-wide bookstores or grabs a spot on Oprah's booklist. Asylum Denied, written by two authors, the above-mentioned David Kenney Ngaruri and Philip Schrag, the professor of law at Georgetown University, serves both as a law manual and as a heart-warming story of adventure, perseverance, and love. Unlike most law-related books, it reads very smoothly and catches your attention from the first page. Even if this is not the usual type of book you read, I urge you to give it a try. If the face on the cover of the book is not enough to convince you to read it, then I hope this review will.

A surprisingly good book for a law school class

I read this book for my Immigration Law class at school, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed the book. Before I read the book, I was afraid that it would be a boring book about the technicalities of an individual's application for asylum, the process, and the outcome. Although that may be one accurate summary of Asylum Denied, the book actually has more substance and story to go along with the bare asylum application process than I expected. I really liked how the book began with vivid descriptions of Jeff's ordeal in a water cell. It was disturbing and confusing because the reader does not yet know why he's there at this point, but it is the perfect opening to the book that hooks in skeptical readers like me. I forgot that I was reading a book for a law school class. Instead, I was just reading a really good book because I wanted to.

The book did not disappoint me after the initial opening scene. It continued to tell the life story of Jeff, which I found interesting and gripping, giving me a sense of who Jeff is and how he would later end up in a situation where he needed to apply for asylum in the US. Notwithstanding the title, this book is really about the whole life of Jeff, not just his application, and subsequent denial, of asylum. I was supposed to read this book with immigration law in my mind, but I could not help but be engrossed in the story and hurried through the pages describing the substantive law and the asylum process, slowing down only when the pages turned back to the story. I did however pay attention to the retelling of the oral arguments in the 4th circuit, only because I found the judges so obtuse that I was infuriated. How could they not understand that it was his state of mind before he left for Kenya that matters and not whether he was actually tortured again when he returned to Kenya that matters?

I understand that the book was written by Jeff and his lawyer, thus, it would only be natural that readers would sympathize with their story more than they would with the typical asylum applicants. However, the book did do a good job illustrating vividly what a lengthy process application for asylum is, what it entails, the emotions that the people involved can suffer, and what could be at stake for every asylum applicant. This was a really good book to see the law in a real life situation.

Although I read this book for a class, I would definitely recommend it to others as a pleasure read. Although there are parts of the book that are a little dense (the parts describing the law and asylum process), they are not hard to get through as they are integral to understanding the hardships that Jeff had to go through. Jeff's story is definitely interesting enough to keep you reading until the end.

John Grisham meets Kafka in the US Immigration System - Must Read.

This is an eloquent and heartbreaking tale of one immigrant's journey throught the U.S. Immigration system. It reads like a John Grisham novel although the story is sadly true. The author, a 7-foot tall Kenyan, was a political prisioner in Kenya for his role as a labor organizer. He faced imprisonment and torture and was ultimately able to escape Kenya via the promise of a basketball scholarship in the United States. In his quest for political asylum in the U.S. he encouters heartless judges,corrupt officials, State Department bureaucrats, a beautiful "witch", kidnapping rebels, interpid law students and a dedicated and brilliant law profressor (his co-author). I couldn't put it down and felt a mixture of outrage at the U.S. immigration system while in awe of the power of the human spirit to overcome the most dauting of odds.

Superman is many things to many people.

It is very clear that to each of us Superman is a different person and the same goes for his alter ego Clark Kent and the rest of the characters in the DC Universe. As a Superman reader and collector for 65 years and as one who used Superman in the classroom for 40 years, I start reading any book like this with a prejudiced viewpoint. I know Superman, I was born in his birth city or rather the city his creators lived in.

I wish I could give this book five stars, some of the selections are sensational. Others kind of go against everything I personally believe about The Man of Steel. In some cases I can't believe the authors really read the comics or saw the films and TV shows. This is just my perception. I won't cite examples one way or another as this is a matter of personal opinion.

Over all I love the book and especially enjoyed reading plotlines and quotes from various comic books that took me back to when I first read them. You are bound to forget a great deal in 65 years and in that context this was a trip down memory lane. However, you can over analyse and I am reminded of college English teachers who destroyed more than one person's interest in reading by being picky over every little line in a story.

Most of the writers were careful in their analysis, using logic and good sense while showing a love for the Superman legend. Others over killed by trying to intellectualize everything said or done by Superman, Clark Kent, Lois and others no matter how trite. My favorite current reading about Superman is Steve Skelton's, "The Gospel According To The World's Greatest Super Hero". That I have read twice since receiving it a month ago.

I am glad that after the documentation section at the end of each article there is mention of other works by the authors that the reader may want to check out. Some I will.

A fun book of essays about Superman from about 9 years ago, so some feel a bit dated

'The Man from Krypton: A Closer Look at Superman' edited by Glenn Yeffeth is a series of essays about Superman. Most of them are pretty good, but the collection is about 10 years old, so there are probably things that could be updated.

Essays include everything from examinations of all the actors who have portrayed Superman as actors and voice actors. There is an examination of closed communities and how those might relate in to Smallville and the show Smallville. There is an essay by Larry Niven about the impossibility of Superman and Lois Lane ever being very intimate. There is an essay wondering why Superman never just stopped Hitler, and giving an excellent explanation of why.

The book was written while Smallville was still on the air. Lois and Clark wasn't too distant. Brandon Routh was about to play him on the big screen (and we all know how that turned out).

It's interesting viewing a long-lived character like this over the lens of time. Superman has changed because he's had to to stay relevant. In the current incarnation of the Man of Steel, he is a dark, brooding character. Some of the essays feel a bit dated and I'd love to see a revised version that includes something about the Henry Cavill version of Superman.

What a great read! Most of the essays I agreed with and some I did not, but I enjoyed reading everyone of them. What a fun and intellectual way to look at, who I believe is the greatest character in the history of popular culture.

A new twist on an old problem

Professor Powell's book is jammed with facts and wisdom. He combines law, sociology, history, and psychology into a well written text that shows how white privilege is unhealthy for both whites and non-whites. Anyone involved in mixed racial marriages,friendships,clients, or work place, this is an essential read. For all others, it is a must read. The origin of racism as well as numerous racial myths are discussed and why America must embrace inclusion if it wants to flourish. Larry Papier

Thoughtful profound book

powell covers tremendous ground across disciplines and traces the deep roots of racism. He shows how our unconscious preconceived notions inhibit our movement toward resolution and offers great insight into future steps. A magnificent book.

Cutting of Edge, Nuanced, Illuminating

“Race operates as a verb before assuming significance as a noun” (53). Powell’s central thesis is that we have been “racing” society, and that the verb-operation of race can and will continue even if we never talk about the noun “race.” Post-racial, colorblind rhetoric does not work because it fails to undo the unconscious and systemic components of the white racial hierarchy. Race has been “raced” into our culture and only through direct and explicit engagement can a more just society be approached. In terms of policy reform, powell advocates for “targeted universalism” (24ff). Such an approach sets universal goal of enfranchisement for all peoples while recognizing the particularities of our situatedness. Unless whiteness as the governing power structure is intentionally dismantled, powell explains, inequitable social arrangements will continue reconstituting themselves.

What is needed today, and what has been sorely lacking in racial discourse up to this point, are robust examinations of whiteness. Unless we can draw out the many layers of its totalizing character, we will continually discover that as soon as we have dismantled one structural manifestation it has shape-shifted into a fresh evil. The best example powell provides is the distinction between North and South/pre- and post-Civil Rights forms of racism. The South’s Jim Crow apartheid system was the prime target (alongside universal suffrage) of civil right’s reform. This was not, however, the way whiteness had “raced” the North where segregation of metropolitan space through redlining, blockbusting and other tactics was the central tool. As Jim Crow was repealed, the Northern strategy slipped in on its heels (147ff). In the spirit of redirecting the social construction of race in America, Powell offers a slew of penetrating insights into the nature of whiteness: whiteness as anxiety and fear, as isolation, as a property interest, and even as “emptiness” because it is unconstitutable without a discriminatory relation to the non-white other. A beautiful moment of exposure comes through his use of a quote from James Baldwin, “As long as you think you’re white, there’s no hope for you” (150). Whiteness, as it functions in America, is not an ontological fact for anyone. Painful though it may initially be, there is hope for those who identify as “white” to discover that the implicit meanings under this term need not possess any descriptive power over us.

The reconstructive fight for powell lies at two levels: 1) rooting out our unconscious biases, and 2) transformations in our political economy. For him, this is fundamentally spiritual work for it involves both redemptive suffering and profound relational work that must be guided by love.

If there is a lack, it is that his book does not dig back far enough into the substrates of Western civilization to uncover the root causes of racism. For that, I recommend Willie James Jenning's brilliant text *The Christian Imagination.* But no book can do everything, and powell is excellent at what he does.

Powell named the most difficult aspect of anti-racist work for me as a white man in a more honest and accurate way than I have ever heard:
“Beyond these distortions, however, lies a more fundamental fear: self-annihilation. For in the context of this society’s unwillingness to come to terms with its racial organization, to ask people to give up whiteness is to ask them to give up their sense of self. We cannot expect people to expose themselves to ontological death or worse. Instead, we must provide space--institutional space, political space, social space, and conceptual space--for the emergence of new relationships and a new way of being that exists beyond isolation and separation” (xviii). Being able to name the pain whites experience--without comparing or equating it to pain of people of color--is a healthy and constructive step toward progress, something I needed fresh permission to own. Powell helped renew my soul, deepen my resolve, and clarify my mission.
