Not Political Leaning
By Testy Tim
Since others have prominently noted that this book is very similar to one of Kessler's earlier works, I will say this is my first exposure.

Content:
Although I lean conservative, I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I was eager to read this book because it interests me how the 'anointed' really live their lives. Opposite my expectation, I did not get the impression that this book's sole purpose was to bash one political party or the other. For example, the Obamas are generally portrayed in a favorable light, but not all good. The same is true of the Bush family. I do believe the author reported accurately what the Secret Service agents revealed to him. It seems that the book has two purposes. First, to expose the true character of our elected officials. And second, to expose how the Secret Service management makes bad decisions which ultimately puts protectee lives in danger. Not that it was wrong, or bad, but one thing that did not grab my interest were the parts that delved into the inner workings of the Secret Service.

Style:
This is mostly an easy read. However, in a couple of places in the book the author follows a couple of rabbit trails and then abruptly snaps back to the original subject. I found that to be hard to follow and a bit frustrating, which is why I took one of the stars away.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and learned a few things. What more could you ask for? I will be recommending this book to my friends.

A Danger to Our Country and Leaders
By Michael
The author writes an interesting and thoughtful book about a part of government that many people are not very familiar with: the Secret Service. He describes the vast and impressive array of procedures employed in protecting presidents ,current and previous, vice presidents, and their families, as well as cabinet secretaries and political leaders in the line of succession to become president in case of a severe emergency. During a presidential election the leading candidates are also protected.

To accomplish their mission Secret Service agents must work in close proximity to all their protectees, becoming a part of their lives on a daily basis. This gives the agents a clear window through which to observe their personalities and character. Revelations from some of the agents indicate that what transpires in their clients' private lives may not comport with the image that they desire to show to the public.

As examples, the book describes how a number of protectees were especially "nasty" to the agents and their own staffs: Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Al Gore.
Especially friendly and respectful to agents were Ronald Reagan, Bush 41 and 43 and their wives, Dick and Lynne Cheney and Mitt and Ann Romney. The sexual proclivities of LBJ, Bill Clinton (both inside and outside of the Oval Office) and Gary Hart are portrayed as important character issues. Some revelations are surprising, such as the preference of Joe Biden to swim naked in his home pool while being closely guarded by female agents. Many other observations of family members are also related, Including some of their drinking habits. Tension with the children of protected families seems to be prevalent in many cases.

Another focus of the book is an analysis of the management of the Secret Service. The author describes and details the incompetence and corruption of senior management that has resulted in poorly trained agents with very low morale, lack of leading-edge technology and weaponry to discover and eliminate threats, and in some cases a demonstrable lack of concern about national security. Prior lapses in standard procedures have resulted in the assassination attempts on presidents Reagan and Ford, and have put more current presidents in grave danger. After a number of recent scandals involving penetration of the White House grounds by dangerous perpetrators, the author ridicules president Obama's decision not to bring in a new director from the outside to replace the one who was fired, as he believes that as a result there will not be any change in the dysfunctional culture at the top.

This book is pretty damn good
By L. Charles Wimer III
After reading other reviews, I noticed this book has come under tremendous scrutiny for being an update to the authors first book on the secret service. Let me say, I didn't read that book and my review is strictly based on this title. I found The First Family Detail to be very informative on the dynamics of the Secret Service. I found it to also be very entertaining with respects given to the politicians that the Secret Service provides protection to -- some of which is humorous and confirms public perception. The balance of the intertwines of the Secret Service and the thought provoking coverage to our politicians and there families is 50/50. Personally, I would have rather had more of the later. I'd give this one a solid 4 stars and I will long remember some of the contents during the upcoming 2016 election because I'm sure some of the personalities covered in this book will be key figures during the election.

The Worst Interests of the Child: The Trafficking of Children and Parents Through U.S. Family Courts, by Keith Harmon Snow

“Keith Harmon Snow’s meticulously documented investigation into sex-trafficking of children by American judges is not to be missed. This scandal is one of the most important censored stories in our country today. I might not believe what Mr. Snow has written if I had not independently investigated two dozen cases not discussed in his article, and found ample evidence of the precise dynamics he lays out for us here. Anyone who says they care about child welfare needs to learn what is happening in family courts and take action until it is stopped. Once you start reading this exposé, you won’t be able to put it down.” —Lundy Bancroft Author of Why Does He Do That? History’s largest-selling book on domestic violence

"Keith Harmon Snow's meticulously documented investigation into sex-trafficking of children by American judges is not to be missed... I might not believe what Mr. Snow has written if I had not independently investigated two dozen cases not discussed in his article, and found ample evidence of the precise dynamics he lays out for us here. --Lundy Bancroft, Why Does He Do That?

"It is a national scandal that family courts systematically fail to protect children from physical and/or sexual abuse by a predatory parent. What is equally scandalous is the silence of the mainstream media to cover the issue... With luck, when reporters like Keith Harmon Snow shine a light on the grave injustices taking place in family courts, Americans will be filled with a sense of responsibility and take action to protect children from family court abuses."
--Garland Waller
Producer, No Way Out But One

"If you are facing the Family Law or Dependency Courts, do not enter until you have read this book by Keith Harmon Snow. We won my daughter's case and protected my grandchildren with the help of the article that led to this book." -- Lori Johnson, Los Angeles

Thank you Keith for your courage and your determination not to be silenced
By Lori Handrahan
Keith Harmon Snow's book is a must-read. For the first-time a writer of courage has called the corrupt US family court systems what they are - criminal organized trafficking of children for sex abuse by, largely, elite, rich, white men.

What PA AG Kathleen Kane is exposing now in the PA court system is exactly what is happening in Maine with Judge Judge Moskowitz and many other judges. When will DOJ and the FBI open a federal investigation into the racketeering of Maine's judges, prosecutors, cops and child protection staff? How many more lives must be destroyed?

Thank you Keith for your courage and your determination not to be silenced.

May God bless and protect you.

Thank you.

Pretty package containing gritty details about the truth of how family courts operate
By Atlanta Reader
Very meticulously researched, beautifully packaged book carrying horrible, timely, essential information for any citizen who believes the justice system needs reform (or in these egregious cases, serious scrutiny followed by outraged action rather)--or perhaps mainly, for anyone who believes our system works just fine as it is. All is not fine. In instances recounted in this book, and which I know apply far beyond its scope, all is the evil opposite of fine. This is not theory--it's hard hitting facts told in the author's insistent, passionate yet soundly journalistic prose. Keith Harmon Snow cuts right to it--please, please take the time to read this book and share it--widely--with others. #weneedtoknow

expose the evil doings of the worst of the worst of our society
By Kindle Customer
Following up on his emotionally shattering article, A LIFE SENTENCE * U.S. FAMILY COURTS SACRIFICING MOTHERS & CHILDREN'
Family Courts Behind an Epidemic of Pedophilia & Judicial Abuse, published online by Conscious Being Alliance and spread widly over the internet via mothers' custody websites in 2012. When I read that piece, I realized that Keith Harmon Snow stands as a giant among the very few investigative reporters there who, despite the real dangers of doing so, expose the evil doings of the worst of the worst of our society.
He nails the corrupt family court system to the wall once again, in his full-sized expose, The Worst Interests of the Child. Here is a man who stands 180-degrees apart from the kind of men described by mothers' custody attorney Richard Ducote as "breastless men," men who deliberately, maliciously, and relentlessly torment their female ex-partners in the cruelest of ways: by separating her from and harming their children. I happen to know a lot about this topic, as I have worked or interacted with thousands of women who have lost their children under the very same kinds of circumstances described by Keith in this book. The entire book rebounds with truth and resonates with integrity. I read it straight through in one sitting--that's how strong his message is; I couldn't stop until I got it all. Get it, read it, and weep for this generation's children.

America's Unwritten Constitution: The Precedents and Principles We Live By, by Akhil Reed Amar

Despite its venerated place atop American law and politics, our written Constitution does not enumerate all of the rules and rights, principles and procedures that actually govern modern America. The document makes no explicit mention of cherished concepts like the separation of powers and the rule of law. On some issues, the plain meaning of the text misleads. For example, the text seems to say that the vice president presides over his own impeachment trial—but surely this cannot be right. As esteemed legal scholar Akhil Reed Amar explains in America’s Unwritten Constitution, the solution to many constitutional puzzles lies not solely within the written document, but beyond it—in the vast trove of values, precedents, and practices that complement and complete the terse text.

In this sequel to America’s Constitution: A Biography, Amar takes readers on a tour of our nation’s unwritten Constitution, showing how America’s foundational document cannot be understood in textual isolation. Proper constitutional interpretation depends on a variety of factors, such as the precedents set by early presidents and Congresses; common practices of modern American citizens; venerable judicial decisions; and particularly privileged sources of inspiration and guidance, including the Federalist papers, William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. These diverse supplements are indispensible instruments for making sense of the written Constitution. When used correctly, these extra-textual aids support and enrich the written document without supplanting it.

An authoritative work by one of America’s preeminent legal scholars, America’s Unwritten Constitution presents a bold new vision of the American constitutional system, showing how the complementary relationship between the Constitution’s written and unwritten components is one of America’s greatest and most enduring strengths.

Washington Post
“In America’s Unwritten Constitution, Akhil Reed Amar aims high and has produced a masterful, readable book that constitutes one of the best, most creative treatments of the U.S. Constitution in decades.... [The book] is filled with thought-provoking material and fun vignettes, suitable for a wide audience.... Amar’s approach is refreshing…. Amar makes a creative case that America’s written Constitution and its unwritten Constitution, since the beginning of the nation, have fit snugly together to form a single, more perfect union.”

“Akhil Reed Amar is a rarity: a progressive law professor who is unafraid of the text of the Constitution.... In his ambitious new book, America’s Unwritten Constitution, he examines the paradox of needing to go beyond the text in order to faithfully follow the text.... His is a ‘holistic’ interpretation, one that rejects reading passages or clauses of the text in isolation from the document as a whole. He is masterfully creative in finding overarching themes that tie the disparate clauses together in novel and sometimes counterintuitive ways.... A highly engaging and thought-provoking book.”

New York Times Book Review
“In America’s Unwritten Constitution, Akhil Reed Amar, a commendably unorthodox and, in some ways, iconoclastic constitutional scholar at Yale Law School, bucks dominant opinions on both sides of the political spectrum. He contends that the written Constitution points to an unwritten one, and he argues that we can interpret with both intellectual honesty and analytical rigor.”

Boston Globe
“The Constitution has been described as both binding law and aspirational treatise.... Akhil Amar, a Yale law professor and one of contemporary America’s most brilliant constitutional scholars, [suggests] in his latest, and best, book, America’s Unwritten Constitution, that the issue is not an ‘either-or’ question.... As a lawyer and constitutional rights activist, I cannot imagine how anybody who cares about the law, and justice, which are not always the same thing, could fail to place this important book at the very top of the must-read list. It’s a gem.”

Commonweal
“America’s Unwritten Constitution is full of fascinating history, as well as novel and often persuasive analysis.... An ambitious book, and an impressive one. It tackles many of the most important and controversial issues in constitutional law. Amar’s arguments are uniformly informative and ingenious.... This book demonstrates with force and clarity that the relation between authoritative written texts of the past and conceptions and practices that have developed over time is a central concern not only of religious doctrine but also of secular law.”

The Federal Lawyer
“[An] ambitious work.... Amar’s great contribution is to relate some of the great thematic developments of constitutional history to the words of the Constitution itself.... America’s Unwritten Constitution is not a treatise intended to guide legal practitioners or political scientists. Its aim is the more majestic one of articulating some of the grand underlying themes of American constitutional law and grounding them in the constitutional text. It aspires to be what Thucydides called ‘a possession for all time,’ and it succeeds. Readers today, as well as those of future generations, will read it to their profit.”

Laurence H. Tribe, Carl M. Loeb University Professor and Professor of Constitutional Law, Harvard Law School
“Akhil Amar’s splendid new book, America’s Unwritten Constitution, combines an unmatched eye for detail with a unique capacity for overarching perspective and masterfully elegant synthesis. It is a wonderfully readable companion to Amar’s unparalleled earlier volume, America’s Constitution: A Biography. Together, these two works convey as little else can the majesty and sweep of America’s constitutional project.”

Ken Starr, President of Baylor University; Solicitor General of the United States, 1989-1993; Independent Counsel, 1994-1999
“In America’s Unwritten Constitution, Professor Amar adds to his already masterful bibliography what will instantly become a classic examination of constitutional law. As the Constitution itself stood in need of a seminal biography, so too the vast and varied domain of our Nation’s constitutional law cried out for a guidebook. Professor Amar has now brilliantly provided both.”

Richard Brookhiser, author of James Madison
“Akhil Amar brings the patience of a historian, the ardor of a lover, and (yes, sometimes) the panache of a conjurer to America’s unwritten Constitution. If you want to argue with him, you will have to summon all these qualities yourself. This is a serious and provocative book.”

Steven G. Calabresi, Class of 1940 Research Professor, Northwestern University School of Law; Co-Founder of the Federalist Society
“This book is brilliant, creative, ambitious, comprehensive, imaginative, and thought-provoking. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Constitutional Law.”

Nadine Strossen, Former President, American Civil Liberties Union; Professor, New York Law School
“This is an engrossing, epic work of enduring importance—not only a treasure trove for scholars of American law, history, and politics, but also an inspiring, empowering  guidebook for activists. It compellingly demonstrates how to harness the Constitution’s full meaning in order to promote its thrilling vision of liberty and justice for all. No matter what your prior knowledge of this field, and no matter what your ideological perspective, this magnificent book will enhance your understanding and appreciation of our cherished Constitution. If I had to choose a single work to recommend to either my constitutional law students or my civil libertarian colleagues, this would be it.”

Kirkus Reviews
“[Amar lays] out his argument in case-by-case details that are scholarly and legalistic but always readable.... [An] ingenious mixture of history, legal anecdotes and hypothetical cases.”

Publishers Weekly
“Yale law professor Amar follows his highly regarded historical-textual analysis of America’s Constitution with a companion volume on the history, culture, and legal tenets of the ‘unwritten constitution,’ the traditions and precedents that inform constitutional interpretation.... Sophisticated readers will be rewarded for traveling with Amar as he covers a great deal of ground.”

Booklist
“Deeply researched and carefully argued, this book is nothing less than a sophisticated and comprehensive theory of constitutional jurisprudence that resists being construed along narrow political lines. Indispensable for law students and scholars, this will also be enjoyed by general readers who are passionate about constitutional law.”

Another Sterling Performance from Prof. Amar
By Fakey McFakename
I just received this book - two weeks before it is officially released. I'm not entirely sure how that is possible, but congratulations to Amazon for its efficiency.

As a Yale Law student, the temptation to buy this book was overwhelming. And it hasn't disappointed: as one would expect from Akhil Amar, the writing is lucid; the arguments are powerful (even when one might not entirely agree with them); and the level of scholarly detail astounding. I have no doubt that this book will take its place in the canon of Constitutional scholarship, and every law student, attorney, and judge should put this at the top of their reading list.

Amar is known for holding a few positions outside the mainstream, and this book is no exception. Like in America's Constitution: A Biography, readers will occasionally find, particularly near the end of a chapter, some claims that may lead them to raise an eyebrow. But even these deserve a careful read, and from time to time, the reader will be convinced. Even when they are not, hearing Amar's intelligent arguments will remind them of the necessity of not blindly following the mainstream and making one's mind up for oneself, based on all the evidence and logic.

Some arguments in this book are of enormous importance. Amar's call to remember the Common Law and revolutionary experience that colors the words used in the concise text of the Constitution serves as an important reminder to modern judges to avoid the temptation to construe language in a vacuum; like all forms of communication, it is vital to recall that the meaning of language is a product of social and historical context. Similarly, Amar's reminders that, even when a broad principle is enumerated in the Constitutional text, advances in understanding may lead it to be applied differently to how the Drafters may have expected resemble the 'New Textualist' and 'Living Originalist' (see: Living Originalism) schools that have done so much to ground rights 'discovered' recently in sound constitutional theory.

Nonetheless, one cannot accept what Amar says uncritically. Unless I have missed it, he fails to address recent revisionist arguments against the traditional identification of the early 20th Century as 'the Lochner era' (see, e.g., Rehabilitating Lochner: Defending Individual Rights against Progressive Reform). Whatever one thinks about whether these arguments have merit, they deserve a response. While Amar properly criticizes the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade for its singular unwillingness to explain how it found a right to abortion that contradicted the laws of every State, his proposed alternative basis - that these laws that specially affected women were invariably first enacted by all-male legislatures - is almost perverse in its tendency to ignore the fact that such laws are generally created not out of any evil desire to subjugate women (even if some - presumably including Amar - might say that was their effect), but out of a sincere belief that a child's life is terminated. Nor, as far as I can tell, does Amar discuss whether Roe could survive if a legislature in which women were properly represented decided to limit access to abortion. Again - whatever one thinks of abortion and Roe, Amar's argument has notable omissions.

Despite these caveats, and the disagreements many (if not most) readers will have with some of Amar's positions (inevitable for a book that comments on so many controversial legal and political issues), this book clearly deserves five stars. Overall, it is an excellent work of scholarship - and like all such works, it should not be read uncritically. But disagreeing with an argument in the book is part of the fun of reading it.

By Eclecticism
Like another reviewer here, I bought this Kindle book on the strength of Akhil Reed Amar's other book, "America's Constitution: A Biography." Er, no problem with the use of "America" in either of these titles. These two books really should be read sequentially, starting with Biography. In Biography, Reed goes word for word through the "terse text." In Unwritten, he shows how the various Constitutions -- implicit, lived, symbolic, etc. -- flesh out and strengthen the words of the document itself.

While reading this book I was mulling the thought of subtracting a star due to a tendency of the author to get a little too far down in the weeds. And then I came to Chapter 6, "Honoring the Icons: America's Symbolic Constitution." This chapter examines six texts -- no spoilers here but at least one of them will surprise you -- that illustrate not just the Constitution but what it means to be an American. Another part of this chapter -- on the three Supreme Court cases that deserve to be in the SCOTUS Hall of Shame (my words, not his) is similarly insightful. This chapter is worth being issued as a Kindle-single edition.

Akhil Reed Amar's writing throughout is lawyerly but elegant (check out the Look Inside feature to confirm). The book is written for a layperson, not a lawyer, with ample, clear definitions of important terms. Yes, Amar should be on the Supreme Court. Maybe he's been asked, but why would he give up a tenured gig at Yale to come down to Washington, even if a seat on the Supreme Court is tenured as well?

Buy both of these books and read them carefully. You will emerge with a greater understanding of the document and our society. And speaking of Biography, I've given my hard-copy version to a friend and replacing it with the Kindle version. Both books deserve re-reading.

Why Unwritten Law Is So Important In America
By John A. Hunt, Attorney, Las Vegas, Nevada
Akhil Reed Amar, a professor of law at Yale Law School who is well known as a legal scholar and expert on constitutional law, impressed me when I read his scholarly treatise on the Bill of Rights but I am even more enamored after completing “America's Unwritten Constitution: The Precedents and Principles We Live By.” In this book Amar delves into and explains why there are so many legal constitutional precedents now set in stone that are not actually enumerated in the Constitution.

Containing only 8,000 words, the U.S. Constitution cannot possibly explicitly provide for every issue faced by our nation down through the years to this present day. Yet, argues Amar, America’s written constitution and unwritten Constitution fit snugly together to create this grand body of laws that guides our nation through its grand history. The author’s call to pay attention to common law and historical context is a solid reminder that legal opinions cannot be written in a vacuum. The author’s lawyerly but elegant style helps all readers understand how our Unwritten Constitution came to be and how important it is to all citizens.

Imprisoned by the Past: Warren McCleskey and the American Death Penalty connects the history of the American death penalty to the case of Warren McCleskey. By highlighting the relation between American history and an individual case, Imprisoned by the Past provides a unique understanding of the big picture of capital punishment in the context of a compelling human story.

McCleskey's criminal law case resulted in one of the most important Supreme Court cases in U.S. legal history, where the Court confronted evidence of racial discrimination in the administration of capital punishment. The case marks the last that the Supreme Court realistically might have held that capital punishment violates the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. As such, the constitutional law case also created a turning point in the death penalty debate in the country. The book connects McCleskey's case -- as well as his life and crime -- to the issues that have haunted the American death penalty debate since the first executions by early settlers and that still affect the legal system today.

Imprisoned by the Past ties together three unique American stories in U.S history. First, the book considers the changing American death penalty across centuries where drastic changes have occurred in the last fifty years. Second, the book discusses the role that race played in that history. And third, the book tells the story of Warren McCleskey and how his life and legal case brought together the other two narratives.

Review

"In McCleskey v. Kemp, the Supreme Court egregiously blinked-finding that patterns of life-or-death decisions in Georgia cases could be explained on no basis other than race, yet approving Georgia's use of the death penalty nonetheless. Imprisoned by the Past for the first time exposes the complex and disturbing reasons why the Supreme Court stumbled so badly in McCleskey and how the nation has been struggling ever since to extricate itself from a flawed and historically tainted punishment." -James S. Liebman, author of The Wrong Carlos: Anatomy of a Wrongful Execution

"Imprisoned by the Past is an important and compelling history of the United States death penalty. By placing that history next to the story of Warren McCleskey and the role of race, Jeff Kirchmeier provides new insight into the legacy of capital punishment and the status of the death penalty today. Anyone interested in understanding the sweeping scope of death penalty history and its human story will want to read this book." -Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocents

"The Definitive examination of a case that might have revolutionized criminal Justice in the United States." - Evan J. Mandery, author of A Wild Justice: The Death and Resurrection of Capital Punishment in America

"This is an incredible book and indeed one of the most important death penalty books that has appeared on American bookshelves in recent decades. It is bound to be adopted in courses in Criminal Law and Criminology, and, in addition, will be widely read by practitioners and the wider public who are looking for a first-rate introduction to the way the death penalty works, and does not work, in modern American society." -Michael L. Radelet, co-author of In Spite of Innocence: Erroneous Convictions in Capital Cases

"No legal decision in the last half of the 20th century characterized America's continuing failure to confront its history of racial inequality more than the McCleskey decision. Jeff Kirchmeier's welcomed and insightful book brings much needed context and perspective to this critically important issue. Compelling and thoughtful, this book is a must read for those trying to understand America's death penalty and its sordid relationship to our failure to overcome three centuries of racial injustice." -Bryan Stevenson, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative and author of Just Mercy: A Short Story of Justice and Redemption

"...Kirchmeier makes a persuasive case that an examination of the death penalty today reveals that "the past is still present" (p. 314). Imprisoned by the Past, Kirchmeier's significant contribution to capital punishment scholarship, impressively marshals a compelling body of historical and contemporary evidence in support of that sobering conclusion." -James R. Acker, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books

"Kirchmeier's is a valuable book. He combines history with clear legal analysis." -Jeff Gamso, Gamso-For The Defense blog

About the Author

Excellent Book
By M F Giesbrecht
Excellent work.
As someone who struggles philosophically with the ethics of established cultural practices and traditions, I was drawn to both this book and this author. Although professor Kirchmeier's "Imprisoned by the Past" is carefully researched, footnoted and sophisticated, it was perfectly accessible to a person like me who has no formal legal training. It's obvious that professor Kirchmeier has vast experience in the classroom conveying complex and difficult ideas in clear and illuminating language.
The book outlines the history and development of the death penalty, including the often agonized decisions of well-intentioned judges, courts, and citizens. With unmistakable evidence, professor Kirchmeier methodically and without bias shows how consistently capital punishment is applied unfairly to African Americans.
Even though most of us understand this to various degrees, the unexpected insight and revelations I found simply made the book hard to put down.

80 Proposals to STOP Wrongful Convictions: - Before the End of This Decade, by Morrison Bonpasse

The United States has a large wrongful conviction problem, and it’s a travesty. This book presents 80 Proposals to STOP the problem. The forensic DNA revolution, which produced its first wrongful conviction exoneration in 1989, has led to some changes in the U.S. criminal justice system but not nearly enough. In the history of criminal justice systems, the people wrongly convicted over the centuries always knew what had happened to them, but few others knew or cared. Now we all know. Despite such books as Edwin Borchard’s 1932 classic, Convicting the Innocent - Sixty-five Actual Errors of Criminal Justice, wrongful convictions were thought in the early 20th century to be improbable or extremely rare. In 1963, Eugene Block published The Vindicators, which, if written today, might have been named The Exonerators, to align with the current word usage. A year after Eugene Block’s book, Edward Radin published The Innocents, which he began with a discussion of “The Myth,” that “innocent people are not convicted for crimes they have not committed.” The four Appendices of this book are lists of books relating to wrongful convictions before and after 1989. Appendix A is a list of general books, with some articles about wrongful conviction, organized by date. Appendix B has a list of books about specific cases of exoneration organized by state and date. Appendix C has a list of books in support of claims of innocence by those convicted of crimes, also organized by state and date. Appendix D provides a short list of novels where wrongful conviction is an issue. By December 31, 2014, twenty-five years after Gary Dotson was exonerated by the vacating of his rape conviction, the count of exonerations in the National Registry of Exonerations had risen to 1,520, including 67 in 1989. The sad and intolerable truth is that even with the highly publicized exonerations of an ever- increasing number of people, but still fewer than 100 per year, there are many more innocent people being convicted each year than are being exonerated. As will be seen in Chapter 1, that 100 is less than one percent of the people likely to suffer wrongful convictions every year. Thus, the vast majority (99+ percent) of wrongfully convicted people either serve their sentences or die in prison. This book presents a call-to-action to achieve two goals within five years: 1. reduce wrongful convictions in the U.S. to .1 percent. 2. reduce the percentage of wrongly convicted inmates in prison to .1 percent, by liberating thousands of wrongly convicted inmates. The last clause of title of this book, “before the end of this decade,” comes from President John Kennedy’s setting the goal for the U.S. to land a person on the Moon by the end of the 1960s. This book is being published in January 2015, which is only five years from the end of this decade of the 2010s, but the country now knows a lot more about the problems of wrongful convictions than the U.S. knew in 1962 about landing a person onto the Moon. For practical purposes, the book title’s goal to “STOP” wrongful convictions is the same as “REDUCE TO .1%,” which is one in one thousand. Themes of this book. The book provides 80 practical proposals for national reform of the criminal justice system in order to reduce the frequency of wrongful conviction to .1 percent or less There are several themes which permeate the book. 1. Make Truth and Justice the highest priority goals of the Criminal Justice System and for its participants. 2. Ameliorate the Adversary Process. 3. Take a systematic look at the criminal justice process. These 80 proposals by no means include the complete set of possibilities, of which there are hundreds. Daniel Medwed has presented many proposed “reforms” and those of others in his excellent book, Prosecution Complex. Those reforms are aimed at the problem of wrongful conviction from the perspective of prosecutors.

Free the innocent, nail the real criminal
By Professional Investigator
This book is obviously the result of enormous research and intelligent thought presented in a most scholarly fashion, a must-read for anyone who wants to halt the tragic consequences of errors (even deliberate misconduct) by police and prosecutors. Wildalone: A Novel (Wildalone Sagas), by Krassi Zourkova

In this enchanting and darkly imaginative debut novel full of myth, magic, romance, and mystery, a Princeton freshman is drawn into a love triangle with two enigmatic brothers, and discovers terrifying secrets about her family and herself—a bewitching blend of Twilight, The Secret History, Jane Eyre, and A Discovery of Witches.

Arriving at Princeton for her freshman year, Thea Slavin finds herself alone, a stranger in a strange land. Away from her family and her Eastern European homeland for the first time, she struggles to adapt to unfamiliar American ways and the challenges of college life—including an enigmatic young man whose brooding good looks and murky past intrigue her. Falling into a romantic entanglement with Rhys and his equally handsome and mysterious brother, Jake, soon draws Thea into a sensual mythic underworld as irresistible as it is dangerous.

In this shadow world that seems to mimic Greek mythology and the Bulgarian legends of the Samodivi or “wildalones”—forest witches who beguile and entrap men—she will discover a shocking secret that threatens everything she holds dear. And when the terrifying truth about her own family is revealed, it will transform her forever . . . if she falls under its spell.

Mesmerizing and addictive, The Wildalone is a thrilling blend of the modern and the fantastic. Krassi Zourkova creates an atmospheric world filled with rich characters as fascinating and compelling as those of Diana Gabaldon, Deborah Harkness, and Stephenie Meyer.

Review
''Readers who love fantastical romances and mythology are apt to fall under the spell of Zourkova's debut, and once they reach the final page, they will hope that Thea and the Estlin brothers' adventures continue in future books.'' --(Booklist)

''Ancient Greek mystery religions, culture clash, and college romance form a heady blend in Zourkova's poetic, striking debut.'' --(Publishers Weekly)

''Zourkova pens a wonderful debut that intertwines love, mystery and Greek mythology in its pages. Readers will eagerly journey alongside Thea as she tackles an atypical freshman year of college. [...] her story is one that cannot be missed.'' --(RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 STARS))

''Bulgarian-born Princeton student Theodora Slavin gets caught up in tales of the samodivi, or wildalones - forest witches of her country's folklore who ensnare men. Think ''Twilight'' and ''A Discovery of Witches''; the fluid, pulsing, gothic narrative seems right for the screen.'' --Library Journal

For every world, there is an underworld

Arriving at Princeton for her freshman year, Thea Slavin finds herself alone, a stranger in a strange land. Away from her family and her Eastern European homeland for the first time, she struggles to adapt to unfamiliar American ways and the challenges of college life—including a young man whose brooding good looks and murky past intrigue her. Drawn to the elusive Rhys and his equally handsome and mysterious brother, Jake, she ventures into a sensual mythic underworld as irresistible as it is dangerous.

The mysteries and backstories are compelling and the reliance on mythologies are inventive and the highlights of the novel.
By Bookreporter
When Thea Slavin comes to Princeton from Bulgaria for her freshman year, she is following in the footsteps of her mysterious older sister, Elza. Her attempts to fit into the culture of American elite higher education are secondary to the strange things that begin happening to her on campus and the magical world she discovers, connecting her to Elza. WILDALONE, Krassi Zourkova’s debut novel, follows Thea from her home in Eastern Europe to Princeton and from a childhood of secrets to a coming of age full of astonishing revelations.

As a small girl, Thea never knew she had an older sister. Despite her parents’ best efforts to protect her from what happened to Elza, she first finds the piano that Elza played and then ends up at the same American college studying with some of the same professors. The beautiful and musically gifted Thea feels her sister's presence at Princeton, but Elza has been dead for many years. Thea is haunted, too, by a handsome and enigmatic man who appears at piano performances and disappears just as quickly. When she meets Rhys, she is drawn into a passionate but confusing affair with him. At the same time, she begins to unravel the perplexing story of Elza.

But Elza's story and Thea's life at Princeton are complicated by the role of Rhys in both their lives, not to mention with Rhys' brother, Jake. The love triangle among Thea, Rhys and Jake becomes increasingly complex and Thea's emotions more and more muddled as the novel progresses. The plot is not a simple romance or mystery, however, because Zourkova's tale is interwoven with threads from Greek and Balkan mythology. The central myth and titular reference is the samodivi, or the wild, powerful forest nymphs of Balkan folklore, translated into English as “wildalones.”

As much as the book is about Thea's coming of age, of the romance she finds in America, and of the music she uses to express herself, it is also about supernatural myths come to life. The truth about Elza can only be realized when Thea understands it in light of the myths of the samodivi and of Orpheus and Dionysus. The result is that WILDALONE is a lushly layered novel, full of sensual relationships, harrowing encounters and secrets brought to light.

The book incorporates several genres and presents them in a dramatic and sometimes breathless manner. Thea is a wide-eyed innocent in a world of deception and inexplicable actualities. It is romantic in both senses of the word, but also otherworldly and tense. The overt sensuality and thick plot may not appeal to all readers, but the mysteries and backstories are compelling and the reliance on mythologies, especially the mostly unfamiliar samodivi tales, are inventive and the highlights of the novel. Zourkova's knowledge of music and art is apparent, thus the passages where she lingers on visual or musical descriptions are successful.

Krassi Zourkova is a talented new writer, and her style undoubtedly will grow more subtle with time.

A lot of promise, but just didn't work for me
By misplaced cajun
Thea Slavin always knew her family was hiding something, but it's only when she's ready to head off to college that she discovers exactly what that is. Looking back, Thea recalls how the family piano was locked away until she discovered it by accident. Her parents allowed her to play, reluctantly. And it's with reluctance that they now allow her to move to the US for college. When she chooses Princeton for her studies, the family secrets slowly begin to reveal themselves. Being a freshman in a new country is enough to deal with, but the myths and legends that surround Thea and her family are amplified at the historic university. As Thea struggles to reconcile her new discoveries with her day to day reality, she meets a man who will cause her to fall head over heels in love. And it's a love that could overwhelm them both.

Wildalone is really hard to sum up without giving anything away. I apologize then if my synopsis is stunted or odd, but I struggled with how much to tell and how much to keep back from the reader.

This debut was one that I'd really been looking forward to. The promise of mystery and Balkan folklore drew me to it, as did the premise and the comparisons (The Secret History and Jane Eyre). In truth, those comparisons turned out to be just a smidge beyond being truly appropriate.

Let me first say that Krassi Zourkova writes quite beautifully. Her description is poetic - fitting considering how much of the story does rely on classic poetry. Sadly, though, the book didn't hit the spot for me.

My issue with Wildalone was the fantasy aspect. It was what I'd craved in the story but mid way through I'd resigned myself to it being maybe a more of a psychological read rather than a mystical one. And then the book shifted - just a little - and the fantastic became part of Thea's normal. Amidst the somewhat heavily philosophical classroom discussions and the eventually tiresome boyfriend issues, this little taste of magic wasn't really enough to make the book a win in my opinion.

Ugh, and the boyfriend issues! This isn't normally an issue for me but in this book it definitely grated on me. And it was the driving force of the story! Even when all was revealed, I didn't have much sympathy for Rhys. What's worse, I liked Thea fine until her entanglement with him so overpowered the rest of the book. By the time we roll to the end of the tale, I felt more than a little lost, unable to grasp what had really happened or what Thea's choice ultimately ended up being. (Though I know what I WANTED it to be at that point and I definitely don't think the author had THAT in mind.)

Ah, well. Wildalone had a lot of promise but sadly just didn't quite work for me.

Unique, Enthralling, Incredibly Written
By C.A. O' Driscoll
I have some good news and bad news for readers of Wildalone by Krassi Zourkova. The good news is that I cannot tell you clearly enough how unique and refreshing this book is! The bad news is that I am not sure how many reasons to give you without spoiling the plot.
As an author and avid reader myself I wasn't expecting the contents of this story. What truly blows me away is that this is Zourkova's debut novel. It's beautifully written and the plot is well executed. She is a written illustrator of unparalleled talent. Seriously. You don't just see red poppies. You smell them. You can feel the warmth of the petals between your fingers after you pluck one from the sunny fields. It's incredible.
On to the plot. How many times have you read a book with the tired dynamic of "girl loves one boy and his brother too?" I can think of five titles with that general plot without trying. However, throw in the mystical Bulgarian folklore waifs called "samodivi" and the dynamic changes. Just like that. Add in a god from Greek mythology and the dynamic turns again. For good measure, lets throw in an older sister of our main character who died on an elite college campus fifteen years prior but was never talked about. Interested yet? You should be.
In a tragic tale of death/disappearance, carnal longing for one brother you cannot have, and a sense of obligation to the brother who reached you first. You cannot tell which direction Thea, our Bulgarian piano prodigy, will choose to lean until the very last page. Knowing her older sister, Elza, was found dead on campus, Thea already feels that there are facts she must know. Thrown headfirst into a professional concert atmosphere she sees a shadow drop a rose and nothing more. A short time later she gets her first assignment and meets the mystery shadow in another dark corner. No name. Not even a good look at him. He promises to find her. Instead his equally attractive brother Rhys finds in a morning fog. By the time she realizes her mistake it's too late to change it. Now Thea is torn between tragic Rhys and his self sacrificing younger brother, Jake. Both men have good qualities but she feels pulled toward both and cannot decide. Then, the shoe drops. To go into more detail would be to spoil your reading pleasure so I'll stop there.
Suffice it to say that have never read a book with this story line. Zourkova gives fabulous descriptions of her native Bulgaria without spending long periods of time there. She introduces and explains her countries folklore and the stunning differences to our own. She then seamlessly weaves them into a tale in America in a way that makes the reader why they hadn't looked at these things before. It's truly engrossing.
This is an absolute five star read and I highly recommend it to readers of all genres. There is something in here for everyone.

Continues setting up the world of Vol. 1
By Philip Daay
This volume develop's Jed's and Nicole's relationship a bit more from Volume 1, but focuses primarily on developing the political context the two princes come from. Jed belongs to a cut-throat political family, so his focus is on protecting those he cares about and pushing them far away from him. Nicole's family rules a weaker, more whimsical kingdom and so he's often innocently self-absorbed. Hence, the natural tension between the would-be lovers. In Vol. 2, Elena returns to take her place as Jed's true wife and Nicole is forced to trade places with her yet again, but discovers that he misses Jed. While the charm of Volume 1 remains, one gets the feeling that the writer is setting up a much larger and darker story for later volumes. A few mysterious characters are introduced who all seem to have an agenda.

The Struggle is REAL!
By Tayler
A beautiful work of art with many different character facets. Though NetComics is a strange manga publisher that doesn't use the original format of "back-to-front" reading. And I just figured out that the author is Korean!? My copy looks wonderful with only minimal spine damage.

Elena returns
By xxEchostreamxx
In this continuation to the first installment of Boy Princess, things take a more political turn, and more is focused on Prince Jed's family issues.

This volume adds more to the Prince Derek/Apothecary "romance" and the shifty-looking would-be queen. A secret is learned about why Derek was given the crown instead of Jed, and more tension is added between the two, foreshadowing a future breakdown between the two half-brothers. Princess Reiny and Nicole's brother also share some moments that might foreshadow a future romance.

This is all good (especially with the two short scenes between Derek and the Apothecary, name still unknown. Hawtness), but Nicole and Jed share only one romantic scene, which was pretty sad in itself. Nicole looks depressed throughout the whole book, upon seeing Jed ride off with his sister, but very little is seen from Jed's point of view. I am anxious to see what will strengthen Jed and Nicole's relationship in the next volume.
