Idiom education - vital and frequently overlooked
By Whistlers Mom
English is one of the most difficult languages to master and one reason is our extensive use of idioms. Even kids who grow up speaking English are frequently puzzled about idioms, particularly those they hear from their grandparents! Therefore, I'm a big believer in "idiom education." I think this book is a good effort. There are a few typos and sometimes the language is a bit stilted, but it's well done over all.
Of course, as a village elder, I'm not thrilled to read that "a dime was the price of a phone call a long time ago." I like to think that things that I can remember myself can't be THAT long ago. However, the author had his work cut out for him just explaining pay phones and why people just didn't use their cell phones, so I suppose I can't expect him to worry about hurting MY feelings.
There were a few of the meanings that I would take issue with. "A picture paints a thousand words" may be a common idiom in some parts of the world, but in the U.S. it is commonly phased "A picture is worth a thousand words." Also, "Making ends meet" doesn't mean doing well with money, but barely getting by financially. Of course "making ends meet" implies that you can pay your bills, which in the present economy might be considered to be doing pretty darn well.
The expression "I didn't just fall off the turnip truck" is a very old one and unlikely to be used by anyone under sixty. I don't think that it means that the speaker is claiming not to be a turnip or as dumb as a turnip. Without dwelling on the intelligence of turnips, I can tell you that (and, yes, this WAS a long time ago!) it was once common for farm workers or members of the farmer's family to ride on the top of a load of vegetables when the farmer drove into town to sell his produce. Trucks were smaller then and seating space in the cab was limited. So saying that you didn't just fall off the turnip truck is a way of saying that you aren't a gullible, naive country bumpkin as opposed to a sophisticated city slicker.
I love the way that the author gives several different ways of expressing the meaning. It makes it very clear to the reader and impresses it on his memory. This is a cute book for kids, especially those who want to be able to trade idioms with Grandpa, but it would be equally valuable for a person learning English and wanting to become more idiomatic (or just understand what's going on!) I hope this is the first of a series.

A good introduction
By C.M.
A few spelling mistakes, however, a good start in using idioms for children. I liked the way each idiom was broken down to a simple form.
