The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian law code of ancient Mesopotamia, dating back to about 1754 BC. It is one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world. The sixth Babylonian king, Hammurabi, enacted the code, and partial copies exist on a human-sized stone stele and various clay tablets. The Code consists of 282 laws, with scaled punishments, adjusting "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" (lex talionis) as graded depending on social status, of slave versus free man. Nearly one-half of the Code deals with matters of contract, establishing, for example, the wages to be paid to an ox driver or a surgeon. Other provisions set the terms of a transaction, establishing the liability of a builder for a house that collapses, for example, or property that is damaged while left in the care of another. A third of the code addresses issues concerning household and family relationships such as inheritance, divorce, paternity and sexual behavior. Only one provision appears to impose obligations on an official; this provision establishes that a judge who reaches an incorrect decision is to be fined and removed from the bench permanently. A handful of provisions address issues related to military service.

About the Author
Leonard William King, (1869 – 1919) was an English archaeologist and Assyriologist. He collected stone inscriptions widely in the Near East, taught Assyrian and Babylonian archaeology at King's College for a number of years, and published a large number of works on these subjects. He is also known for his translations of ancient works such as the Code of Hammurabi. He became the Assistant to the Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum.

I know I should have read the description - but this is incredibly short. I believe this book is now more of an academic reference than something you sit down and read. All I can grade it on is the translation and binding. The cover and binding looks to me like something from the 70s.. but thats not a bad thing. I like the sterile feel of this book. It is very academic feeling (and reading). Those of you looking at this book I am sure know what it is.. I am not sure if this is the best option for everyone - I feel it is expensive for what it is and I would recommend Kindle if you are looking to read it. If you are looking to keep it - this version is excellent - but as I mentioned - expensive.

Ancient Code

This is an interesting book of laws and gives you a great picture into ancient times where kings were gods or god-like. Having experienced the middle east for a time, I made some connections and as law has been passed down; it is easy to see how some of modern day customs or penalties have not appeared out of thin air. Apparently, Hammurabi thought more of unborn life than we.

Great knowledge of ancient history

This code of legal statutes provide great historical knowledge. Written well before the legal codes of the bible and, the ten commandments. It is of great insight and lets you see how the men who wrote the bible took inspiration from this prior work as well as others before The Code of Hammurabi. Pre-dating this work is The Code of Ur-Nammu and even pre-dating that one is The Code of Urukagina. All this codes should be read/investigated for the understanding of how and why this texts just like the bible, in the eyes of the readers, become the words of a god.
