About the Author
Cindy Sanford is a self-proclaimed “tough on crime” advocate whose accidental meeting with a juvenile lifer prompted a re-examination of long held values and beliefs. She is a registered nurse, the mother of three sons and the wife of a Wildlife Conservation Officer. She lives in Bloomsbury, USA. With a moving Foreword by Illinois public defender Jeanne Bishop whose own sister was killed by a minor who, like Ken, received LWOP.

This book changed me.

This book changed me – gave me perspective and empathy I never would
have otherwise experienced. I love that we hear from both the author
and the prisoner in a sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes funny, but
always honest way. It touched my heart. I highly recommend it.

A very careful, compassionate treatment of a very sensitive subject. Ken Crawford is as much a victim as the victim. But only enlightened souls will see this. Others will be too focused on vengeance and hate to understand the impact of a terrible childhood on decision making, and the consideration of consequences.
Seasoned attorneys like Stewart Greenleaf and Jeanne Bishop have changed from hard-driving, 'lock 'em away' mindsets, to an insightful consideration of the individuals who commit such crimes. If professionals like these folks and many others can use intelligence and humility to alter the way they treat such criminals, who are we---the lesser-experienced masses---to hold fast to our harsh views?

When I think of Ken’s childhood, I am struck by how no one showed up to help him survive the agonies of that tender and brutal time. To read of the gentle, gracious, compassionate adult Ken has become, I become even more committed to work for reforming such a broken system that we call juvenile justice. I am so grateful to both Ken and Cindy for opening hearts and minds to redemption. I commend Ken for creating a meaningful life for himself within the confines of prison walls, and I commend Cindy for reaching out to Ken with such deep empathy and love. This story will challenge LWOP and will advance our quest for true justice. It is through Ken’s humanity that many will rise to seek an end to this archaic and senseless form of sentencing.
