An interesting perspective on Canadian law and crime scene investigations

This book, by Daniel J. Baum, focuses primarily on Canadian law, and as such does a good job explaining the rights of police officers, how they go about investigating crimes, and what they’re limitations are. I mostly picked this up because I’m a law school student and criminology student, and I wanted to compare the law and rules of across the globe with those in my own country, Belgium. The book did teach me a few things. It’s informative without ever being boring, and a must-read for people interested in learning more about police investigations, especially in Canada. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Only when disclosures of truly horrible information are made (such as sex tapes) should privacy be able to trump our commitment to free expression. But in sharp contrast to conventional wisdom, Richards argues that speech and privacy are only rarely in conflict. America's obsession with celebrity culture has blinded us to more important aspects of how privacy and speech fit together. Celebrity gossip might be a price we pay for a free press, but the privacy of ordinary people need not be. True invasions of privacy like peeping toms or electronic surveillance will rarely merit protection as free speech. And critically, Richards shows how most of the law we enact to protect online privacy pose no serious burden to public debate, and how protecting the privacy of our data is not censorship.

More fundamentally, Richards shows how privacy and free speech are often essential to each other. He explains the importance of 'intellectual privacy,' protection from surveillance or interference when we are engaged in the processes of generating ideas - thinking, reading, and speaking with confidantes before our ideas are ready for public consumption. In our digital age, in which we increasingly communicate, read, and think with the help of technologies that track us, increased protection for intellectual privacy has become an imperative. What we must do, then, is to worry less about barring tabloid gossip, and worry much more about corporate and government surveillance into the minds, conversations, reading habits, and political beliefs of ordinary people.

A compelling, must read for those interested in privacy and free expression

Intellectual Privacy is a brilliant, compelling, and beautifully written book. It is a tour de force that makes the case for why we should care about privacy in our reading, online browsing, private kibitzing, and all the ways in which we develop ideas and learn about the world around us. Richards's book demonstrates that privacy and free speech are bound together. Rather than perpetually at odds, privacy and free speech are essential to one another and both need nurturing. But when they come into conflict, Richards helps us understand when and why free speech should rule the day.

The book's stories pull you in and keep you there. (The book's auspiciously begins with the little known U.K.'s Optic Nerve collection of webcam communications: "one part James Bond and one part Benny Hill"). Its rich development of the core human values at stake in an era of constant surveillance are its gift. The book shows us that networked technologies do raise new challenges but they do not change the stakes and the real risk to human development, ideas, and democracy in the rush to their adoption. Bravo.

Interesting performance

Privacy, our rights to it and how we seemingly don’t always care or cherish it, is at the centre of this book’s focus. Privacy and free speech sit as uncomfortable bedfellows, made worse by the ease in which privacy can be allegedly destroyed by free speech and vice versa. Increasingly courts try and maintain a balance whilst, at the same time, corporations and governments are nibbling away at the edges.

This is an interesting, fascinating book that probably won’t be seen by as many people as it should. Its style (and price) will restrict its distribution and that is a shame. The author argues that society needs to keep up with technological change and that free speech needs to be cherished and maintained over privacy in most situations. Taking a counter position that free speech and privacy are rarely in conflict, the author suggests that we might be blinded to the bigger picture by society’s love of celebrity culture and other factors.

Of course, the average citizen probably doesn’t care, as long as their social media service is working and the latest reality television programme is being aired. What price progress? For the rest of us, it is a timely, concerning development that deserves greater focus and consideration. Books like this pose interesting arguments and can incite debate. Yet can they lead to change?

The book’s style is written for a professional, lawyerly-type audience. It could have done with being a bit more accessible to the mainstream reader and being a little less focussed on developments in the U.S. Relatively small issues overall, but important ones nonetheless. As you may expect, there is a lot of referenced notes and an extensive bibliography at the back so the determined reader or researcher won’t be short of additional reading.

The core arguments in this book deserve wider distribution and anything that acts as a barrier to these should be examined. Society needs to wake up as it might not be possible to put the genie back into the bottle after a time!

I am IN LOVE with Let Dai!!! It is such a fantastic and compelling story. I new it would be from the second I saw the cover art for the first volume. If you are looking for a really awesome BL manga that will bring out all of your emotions, this is it. I also like this story because it isn't all porny and solely centered around the two main boys...there are some really awesome side stories and a very credible supporting cast.

Outstanding on demography, resource potential, climate change in the North and territorial conflicts.

This is a solidly researched and well-written examination of policy and options in Russia's Arctic and Russia in the Arctic. It's mildly academic, particularly at the start, but that does not impact readability. Maps are well done, but some photos would be helpful.

One main theme in the book is that since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has become more inwardly focused and identifies more with the north, and its economy depends on energy extraction, most of which comes from north of the Arctic Circle. Also key is Russia's demographic problems; the nation has dropped to about 140 million and has an aging population, and so will need migrant workers. Russian life expectancy dropped to 60 for men, which can stand for a number of issues. There are a number of native peoples in the Arctic, largely small in numbers, that are given respect but seemingly not much control over energy and mineral resources.

The first chapters describe Russia and the conquest of and exploitation of Siberia, and interest in the Arctic. Chapter 3 on demography of Russia stands out, and anyone interested in Russia should read it, because demography is very important--and may help account for the apparent Russian intent to reincorporate areas of Ukraine and Belorus into Russia proper. It's a clear and significant analysis.

Chapter 4 concerns climate change and its anticipated impact. Some Russians hope it will improve things, such as opening up more land for crops. Problems include permafrost melting, which would release a huge amount of methane, as well as cause great damage to structures built on it. Many Russians think that the international focus on environmental issues is meant to weaken Russia. Nationalism has sharply increased and with it the interest in Siberia (remember that 20 million Siberians, native peoples included, are geographically next to China).

Chapter 6 discusses Russia's projection of military force into the Arctic. It's most powerful naval force is in the Arctic (the power is mostly in missile submarines). Russia's military seems to be on its way back from a nadir in the 1990s, but is still not so dangerous as it once was, and Russia has trouble with troop levels (remember its population is now way less that half that of the USA). Russia has force but it seems likely to be symbolic in the Arctic.

Chapter 7 examines resources and whether resource nationalism or international cooperation will characterize the inevitable development. Russia simply does not have the capital and current knowhow to efficiently exploit all the available resources, and there will likely be roles for Japanese, South Korean and Chinese capital and corporations. There is great potential in minerals as well as fossil fuels in Siberia and the Russian controlled regions (the EEZ) but also in the seabed below waters that may be Russian or may be international. Chinese interest in the Arctic seems to be disconcerting Russia. Chapter 8 more fully examines shipping in the Arctic. The conclusion is a good summary of all this.

If you are interested in Russian politics or the Arctic, this is a good bet. While Putin's recent foreign policy looks quite a bit different from what is here, I still like it because it explores some of the demographic, geo-poliitcal, and economic realities for Russia in the Far North. Better than I expected.

I originally read this story off the Netcomics.com website. Boy Princess is one of the most unique romance tales I've read in a long time and I mean "unique" in a good way. Volume 1 begins the tale of Nicole, a young boy prince forced by a freak set of circumstances to impersonate his sister Princess Elena and marry a foreign prince to maintain peace between two nations. There's no doubt about it, this novel is definitely aimed at a certain market. For those with an open mind, you'll find in Boy Princess, Volume 1, a very new twist on medieval-era romance. This story will appeal to those who like Romance, Comedy and Drama. Make no mistake, there are Action sequences, but that's not really the main focus here. The writer has a very easy style to read and the interaction/relationship between the two princes is very well thought-out. I found myself enjoying the story a lot more than I had expected. Boy Princess, Volume 1 has a certain charm that sneaks up on you and before you know it, you find yourself very curious about what's going to happen next in later volumes.

Surprised at how good it was!

For a long time, I didn't bother picking up this title because of all the negative reviews it got. But one day, I was browsing through Barnes & Noble and though "what the heck." Well, needles to say, I was surprised at how GOOD it was. I mean, I had to suppress my laughter, and was thoroughly enjoying myself (amid all other readers). The art seemed, roughly put, ugly at first, but after getting into the story, I got so used to it that I began to see the beauty of the characters. From a distance, it's still a little sour to the eye, but the story really makes up for it. Take it from someone who is just about the pickiest buyer ever, this is worth to get. I might not keep it in my collection, but I definitely don't regret buying.

If you are a shonen-ai fan, you just gotta read this.

The book's unique drawings first caught my eyes and the plotline was the second thing that interested me. This book is about a teenage boy (Prince Nicole) falling in love with an older guy (Prince Jed) not even know that he is. The naive boy gets married to another guy! only to save his kingdom. Why? his sister runs away with some poor guy just a few days before her arranged marriage is to take place!

I'm not the biggest shonen-ai book fan but I give Boy Princess two thumbs up!

A competing narrative about what caused the financial crisis has received little attention. This view, which is accepted by almost all Republicans in Congress and most conservatives, contends that the crisis was caused by government housing policies. This book extensively documents this view. For example, it shows that in June 2008, before the crisis, 56 percent of all US mortgages were subprime or otherwise low-quality. Of these, 76 percent were on the books of government agencies such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. When these mortgages defaulted in 2007 and 2008, they drove down housing prices and weakened banks and other mortgage holders, causing the crisis.

After this book is published, no one will be able to claim that the financial crisis was caused by insufficient regulation, or defend Dodd-Frank, without coming to terms with the data this book contains.

About the Author
Peter J. Wallison holds the Arthur F. Burns Chair in Financial Policy Studies and is co-director of AEI's program on Financial Policy Studies. From June 1981 to January 1985, he was General Counsel of the United States Treasury Department, where he had a significant role in the development of the Reagan Administration's proposals for deregulation in the financial services industry. His most recent book is "Bad History, Worse Policy: How a False Narrative about the Financial Crisis Led to the Dodd-Frank Act" (AEI Press 2013). He testifies frequently before committees of Congress, and is a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of the "Wall Street Journal" and other print and online journals. He has also been a speaker at many conferences on financial services, housing, the causes of the financial crisis, the Dodd-Frank Act, accounting, and corporate governance, and is a member of the Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee, the Council on Foreign Relations, the SEC Advisory Committee on Improvements to Financial Reporting (2008), co-Chair of the Pew Financial Reform Task Force (2009), and a member of the congressionally- authorized Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (2009-2011). In May 2011, for his work in financial policy, Mr. Wallison received an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Colorado.

The subprimes made all the difference.

One of the best - perhaps the best - explanation of the financial collapse of 2008.
Most "explanations" of the cause of the crash are really a description of "What" happened: packages of mortgages (which contained some bad stuff) being traded between banks and others, which led to a financial collapse, which led to an economic downturn.
In his book Peter Wallison takes us back to what created the circumstances for the mortgage meltdown: The government policies - under both Clinton and Bush II - that forced the lowering of underwriting standards, in the intent of increasing homeownership. This resulted in a higher and higher percentage of subprime mortgages (the bad stuff). Without so much of the "bad stuff" in the mix, there could not have been the "mortgage meltdown". This book demonstrates that the subprime mortgages, almost by definition,
were bound to fail. Wallison gives us one very telling statistic, for 30 years - right up to 1992, when the government push to issue subprime began - the US percent of home ownership was constant at 64%. By June 2008, it was slightly above 69%. Now, after the past six years of recession and foreclosures, it is back at the historic 64%. The subprimes made all the difference.
Bankers and Economists are not the only readers who will benefit from this book. The casual reader will find very helpful the
definitions and explanations of the terms that are batted around so freely by politicians and the "talking heads" on TV; Sub-Prime and Prime for starters. This truly is a book for all investors, homeowners, and taxpayers.

When i see a string of 1 /5 ratings on a book which has a political or economic topic - which has a lot of lobbyists involved with making money It draws my notice.
Generally in life there are a variety of grades - not a slew of only 1 out of 5
The housing bubble cost people their life savings and more
People who should have never had houses - through political motivations did and it caused big trouble to hard working quote ordinary people

He was more than thorough , common sense led and provided good documentation of past and present excesses - or where our quote politicians want to lead us

You can listen to the podcast yourself before purchasing the book and get a taste of the credibility of the speaker and information
Unfortunately for these left wing posters who gave these low ratings or lobbyist driven commenters with their vodoo economics nothing is for nothing in life and their is no such thing as a free lunch

A must-read for those who seek the truth.

The negative reviews below are testimony to how much fear Peter's work strikes in the heart of the lobbyists and cronyists who benefit from the very entities that caused the financial crisis. You can easily google Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and see the millions and millions they poured into buying power and influence in Washington to prop up their Ponzi schemes. Thank God for Peter Wallison, one of the lone voices in our nation's capital for sound housing policy. This book is a must-read for young and old, right and left, but especially for those who are particularly concerned when special interests collude against the everyday citizen, while pretending like they're helping him or her.
