PS Art Books vs. Dark Horse?
By Moss
I don't own the PS Art Books Adventures Into The Unknown, but I do have a couple of their other horror collections: Tomb of Terror vol 1 and Witches Tales vol 1. If PS Adventures collection resembles the production of those two books then it's safe to say I prefer the Dark Horse offering.
My copy of the Dark Horse Adventures Into The Unknown was originally bought from Amazon for $26 when it was released, giving it an immediate advantage over the $48 PS Art copy, which might not have even been in stock at the time. What I like about the treatment of the Dark Horse book is that the art has been cleanly reprinted and colored - not scanned from old pages of the comics. Instead of getting muddy, dark colors and faded linework this book provides sharp lines and crisp color. Generally when I purchase archive editions of old comics I want remastered artwork. Scans are ok sometimes if done right and priced accordingly. Yoe's books are scanned but they are fairly priced and done well.
If you like pre-code horror comics then you will enjoy this material no matter which publisher you chose. It sounds like PS includes an extra issue, so that tips the scales in their favor if the books are going to cost the same amount. What I would have preferred was Dark Horse making this collection similar to it's Creepy and Eerie archives: nice paper, size and binding. This book's binding is tight, it will not lay flat and the gutters are almost too close to the pictures - probably my biggest complaint.

Classic Horror Tales!
By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy)
Back in the 1940s a comic titled Adventures into the Unknown! hit the stands. It was published by B&I Publishing (aka American Comics Group) and was one of the earliest horror comics. The stories were more traditional and stayed away from the blood/gore horror of today, and relied more upon ghost stories and gothic novels which eventually became a popular series. Just like other comics, Adventures into the Unknown! was criticized for its violence, but it (unlike others) survived the Senate of Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency hearings of 1954. The series eventually ended in 1967 after 174 issues.
Now Dark Horse Comics is bringing back Adventures into the Unknown! for a new generations of readers with this volume containing the first four issues with the following creepy tales: The Living Ghost; The Werewolf Stalks; Haunted House; True Ghosts of History; The Castle of Otranto; It Walked by Night; Strange Spirits; The Cursed Pistol; Kill Puppet Kill; The Mermaid Mole; Out of the Unknown; The Old Tower's Secret; The Haunted Hoard; The Master's Hand; Phantom of the Seas; True Ghosts of History: The Grim Lady of Raynham Hall; The Witch-Cat of Salem; By the Light of the Lantern; The Vampire Prowls; Strange Spirits: Celtic Superstitions; The Specter of Little Dread House; Do Such Things Exist? - The Affair of the Ferrick Phantom; The Empty House; "True" Ghosts of History; The Creekmore Curse; Giants of the Unknown; The Affair of Room 1313; Back to Yesterday; Specialist in Spooks; True Ghosts of History: The Mary's Specter; Rescue Out of the Unknown; and The Woman Wore Black.
I enjoyed reading each haunting tale of dread. My favorites would have to be the Haunted House, The Grim Lady of Raynham Hall, and the weird The Living Ghost. I think it's great that Dark Horse Comics is releasing these old stories as some of them are better than today's horror movies, even scarier. I recommend Adventures into the Unknown! Archives Volume 1 to all horror fans.

FUN TO READ! BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT MORE PRE-CODE HORROR REPRINTED!
By K. Jordan
I rated this 5-Stars, although if allowed I'd grade it down a half-star for the paper. I agree with the reviewers who say the paper should be better. However, an old saying is that "Beggars can't be choosers"...so if these don't sell, you might not get more reprinted! The paper Dark Horse uses on the Jesse Marsh Tarzan Archives is what should be used for all of these books.
That said, however, the content is a lot of fun, so if you like Pre-Code horror, just buy this and don't complain.
I do wish someone would reprint the "Superior Comics" horror titles Journey Into Fear, Strange Mysteries, Mysteries Weird and Strange, etc., and others, because the paper on those old pre-Code horror titles is really going fast!
Again, buy this book to encourage publishers to reprint more pre-Code horror!
