From Publishers Weekly
Leah is a star high school athlete with a cool older sister named Sarai and a single mom who is a state senator in Austin, Tex. One day a letter meant for Sarai finds its way into Leah's backpack and she reads it. It's a love letter, and it's signed "Jessica." Thus begins the plot of this American manga by newcomer Rivkah. Leah can't believe her sister is gay—hasn't Sarai dated boys? Leah also constructs a humorous fantasy in which their harried mother kills Sarai when she finds out. A mysterious phone call from someone who saw Leah reading the letter sends the plot in another direction and ends with her getting hit by a car and waking up in the bed of Elijah, a handsome teenage boy who has two dads. The classic YA themes in play easily adapt to manga conventions—characters who mutate into demons and angels during especially dramatic moments, an emphasis on emotion over plotting and numerous story threads that will pick up in subsequent volumes. The art also sticks to the strongest aspects of manga, with appealing character designs set against background details that are by turns romantic and humorous. Steady Beat sets up enough mysteries and cliffhangers to bring readers back for future volumes. (Oct.)

I was hoping for more
By Brit
On the encouragement of my online friends I picked up this book. After reading it I found myself wondering why they liked it.

The Good: I liked the inking in this book and I liked the backgrounds referenced from catalog pictures. I also liked some of the toning.

I wish there was more that I liked.

The Bad: The characters, especially the women all look exactly the same minus their hair and eye shapes which are slightly different. Sometimes. The mother and all of the older characters look too young, except the man in park who just looks like a troll and sticks out as if he didn't belong. The same faces and body shots were used over and over, to the point that I thought I was seeing the same face on every page. The character's expressions, when not freakishly wacky, looked pasted on and randomized some times with no correlation to the dialog. The characters would look mad in a panel but the accompanying dialog seems to say they were happy, hungry, or even bored.

I'm not usually bothered by most of this in other manga but the slow ponderous flat over the top story made me wish there was something more to the characters and art.

The story was painful. Most of the time I was either bored or wondering why I should care. Why does the fact that her sister might be gay matter? The main character while freaked out isn't prejudice and there is nothing in the plot of the sister being gay or not being gay that has any teeth. The book lacks real conflict in regard to this even though it is supposedly the main point. The Mother who is supposed to be threatening is never actually shown as a threat, but has a few moments where she yells and tells the kids to go to bed. Like a normal mother.

There's no bad guy, conflict, movement, edges, and the one guy in the park that is sort of scummy is played as a joke. The main character is perfect. Just not as perfect as her sister who is now not so perfect cause she may be gay- but you won't find out in this book because it ends before she says anything about it.

The drama in this book is turned all the way up to the point where it passes to bad, then parody, then back to bad again in it's excess. There is crying and sadness and glee and sheer mania but it all feels too forced and wacky to convey a powerful story of self discovery?? Family togetherness? Gay tolerance? I'm not even sure why the gay sister isn't the main character of this book as the straight sister doesn't have anything of interest in her life other then her sister's love life.

Also the story is too convenient. While pondering her sister being gay, although not in any prejudice way, the main girl gets hit by a car driven by a nice gay man with a long time boyfriend that has a hot normal son. She's not going to learn something about tolerance from this hot son of two gay parents, is she?

There was humor in this story but next to none of it was actually funny. The jokes felt forced and clichéd. I looked forward to the author's notes scribbled in the margins only cause they at least were not over the top, and rarely they were cute.

Read this at a library or look through it in the book store before buying it. Who knows you may love it or the next one in the series will be awesome but I can't recommend this first book at all.

What it's like to discover a sibling or loved one is gay . . .
By Isabella De Luca
I first stumbled across this book through my daughter; we're both manga fans, and she reads the artist's online journal. The premise is certainly fascinating. My brother is gay, and I was curious how "Steady Beat" would handle the coming out experience. Everybody reacts a little differently, and some simply don't react at all. How would Rivkah portray this experience not only through the gay character, but the straight ones as well?

"Steady Beat" is stunning in its simplicity. There is a modern edge to the art I find extremely appealing, and I like that it isn't as cluttered as lot of other titles I've read. The characters are expressive but not overly so. The protagonist's internal monologue is punctuated with facial expressions that are original but still recognizable. And I LOVE all the hidden motifs like the "elephant in the room" reference for uncomfortable moments and the Texan (and American) cultural context of the story.

However, what really jumped out to me about "Steady Beat" were the characters. They feel like real people--I found I could easily relate to the main character's thoughts and reactions to the situation--I remember a lot of the same confusion when my brother came out to me fifteen years ago, and found myself chuckling in recognition of her naivete. It's only a big deal when it's still a secret! So just ask her already!

While Leah is in sharp contrast to her "perfect" older sister, Sarai, both obviously have similar doubts and ambitions. I especially enjoyed the love-hate relationship between the two sisters. It's obviously they love each other, but like all siblings, it's a love hidden by default.

Of particular interest to me is the mother: she's a State Senator, and it's obvious this fact will be playing a pretty important role later in the series. But the creator for "Steady Beat" only lightly touches on this fact, hinting at a much deeper plot further down the line. Volume 1 feels more like an introductory story--establishing characters, setting, and theme--and setting up readers for a more fast-paced story.

My only complaint with the book as that it is at times difficult to follow where someone is talking or thinking to themselves. In chapter four, dialog balloons are missing. However, this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment and of "Steady Beat". It's beautifully drawn, reads smooth and quick, and I felt drawn into a world I really want to see more of. It's a delicious tease that leaves me eagerly awaiting future volumes!

Too short, not a lot of information..
By Wicked Good Books "Bianca"
I should start off by saying that this is the first ever graphic novel I've read!

The story is about a girl named Leah Winters who finds a letter that her sister dropped. It is signed "Love, Jessica" and Leah begins to wonder if her sister is gay. She receives a phone call with the person on the other end saying that they could explain it. She goes to the meeting place and her adventure begins. BUT before any huge plot could come in place the story freakin' ends! I absolutely was not expecting that. There was about 30 more pages, but it was a sample of a completely different story...apparently thats how a lot of comics are. Anyways, I should be getting volume 2 in the mail pretty soon. I will read/review that.

The graphics: Well, this comic is in black/white and, like I said, I have never read a comic before so I don't know what's a great comic and what's not when it comes to the art. I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to the pictures but they looked okay.

When you stop looking at "The Odyssey" as a serious work, and instead as an ironic comedy of errors, you understand why people bothered to save the story for several thousand years. It's actually funny, and the illustrations remind you of that.

Ex Oriente Lex: Near Eastern Influences on Ancient Greek and Roman Law, by Raymond Westbrook

Throughout the twelve essays that appear in Ex Oriente Lex, Raymond Westbrook convincingly argues that the influence of Mesopotamian legal traditions and thought did not stop at the shores of the Mediterranean, but rather had a profound impact on the early laws and legal developments of Greece and Rome as well. He presents readers with tantalizing fragments of early Greek or archaic Roman law which, when placed in the context of the broader Near Eastern tradition, suddenly acquire unexpected new meanings.

Before his untimely death in July 2009, Westbrook was regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on ancient legal history. Although his main field was ancient Near Eastern law, he also made important contributions to the study of early Greek and Roman law. In his examination of the relationship between ancient Near Eastern and pre-classical Greek and Roman law, Westbrook sought to demonstrate that the connection between the two legal spheres was not merely theoretical but also concrete. The Near Eastern legal heritage had practical consequences that help us understand puzzling individual cases in the Greek and Roman traditions. His essays provide rich material for further reflection and interdisciplinary discussion about compelling similarities between legal cultures and the continuity of legal traditions over several millennia.

Aimed at classicists and ancient historians, as well as biblicists, Egyptologists, Assyriologists, and legal historians, this volume gathers many of Westbrook’s most important essays on the legal aspects of Near Eastern cultural influences on the Greco-Roman world, including one new, never-before-published piece. A preface by editors Deborah Lyons and Kurt Raaflaub details the importance of Westbrook’s work for the field of classics, while Sophie Démare-Lafont’s incisive introduction places Westbrook’s ideas within the wider context of ancient law.

Review

The late Raymond Westbrook was an outstanding scholar of ancient Greek, Roman, and Near East civilization and law. This selection of his essays, originally published in widespread periodicals and Festschriften, is very well done. A desideratum for classicists and readers all over the world who are interested in the problems of ancient legal history.

(Gerhard Thür, Austrian Academy of Sciences)

Both experts and non-experts in the study of the ancient world are indebted to the editors for this splendid edition of Raymond Westbrook’s papers. Westbrook is a master comparatist, and his work is a model for humanists and social scientists who seek to enhance their discovery procedures by combining internal analysis with comparative perspectives. By comparing Near Eastern legal traditions with the relevant evidence recorded in ancient Greek and Latin texts, Westbrook has profoundly changed how we look at ancient law.

(Gregory Nagy, Harvard University, author of The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours)

Individually and cumulatively (his) essays encourage a re-examination of shared cultural heritage often fiercely resisted by classicist.

(Rockwell CJ)

Intriguing and Better than Average
By KMW
I'll be honest: I got this book with the hopes that it would deal in-depth with issues of sexuality and gender identity and not just be another humor story about a boy who turns into a girl and has some awkward relationships that don't cause much fuss. I say "hope" -- a distant hope. I didn't leaf through it before buying it or anything.

A few pages in I was worried. The main character, Joonha, is a ridiculously sexist sixteen-year-old. It's exaggerated quite nearly past believability not so much because of what he thinks and does, but because he seems, on some level, aware that he is wrong, and the things he says out loud are just so over-the-top. But maybe I'm looking at it too hard from an American perspective, and I had hope still, so I read on.

Some of my worries were allieviated when his parents come onto the scene. After a somewhat worrying scene where his father beats him -- obviously in a way meant to be comical, but also with a note that he's been beaten often for ten years -- they end up being the extreme counterpoint to his views. At first they seem heartwarmingly accepting of all sorts of sexual identities, but then they go past that when they claim Joonha is "overreacting" about the sudden change (which they managed to forget to tell him about... somehow). Luckily, they provided me with something I was looking for: Joonha's mother admits that she would have loved his father even if he had stayed a woman forever. (She might've said it as a joke, though.) Luckier yet, the two disappear, with the explanation that they're rich and neither needs to work. Joonha is eighteen by this point anyway.

After a two year gap in the story, I was very pleasantly surprised. Joonha isn't the same person as before, and doesn't seem to be slowly learning his lesson for his sexist ways in a shoved-down-your-throat way. He's much more interesting as a girl: she's shut into herself, still feeling more or less male (she's embarrassed about her period and still sometimes accidentally walks into the men's restroom). She spent a year out of school to deal with the change. She doesn't have many friends. She doesn't immediately become a giggling, blushing schoolgirl who just can't resist the high school hunk, Taehyun. She's also not immediately a striking beauty -- she's still tall and gangly and tomboyish, to the point that some of the boys in the school are completely uninterested in her and dismiss her as too boyish.

Other characters include Jinhoo, Joonha's best friend from junior high (back when she was a boy), who is much less sexist than early Joonha (though it might be noted that his girlfriend says he never yells "in front of girls" -- so he doesn't quite view them as equal, like Joonha's parents do). There's Heewon, the prettiest girl from their middle school, who Joonha enticed just so he could reject her as being too forward -- and who is still interested in her after a display of emotion on Joonha's last day at their school. She continues to search for her two years after she disappears -- even though Jinhoo suspects she might have died.

And then there's Taehyun. He almost looks like a ganguro girl, though I suspect that's just the artist's style. He's older than all the other students, having failed many times -- mostly because he didn't show up; he only keeps his place in school because he has money. Taehyun, seen in the first few pages to show his sexism (and with the first display of anything other than sexism from Joonha), is the older version of the boy Joonha. He antagonizes Joonha and speculates several times that Joonha might not be female. He's almost less infuriating, though, but ends up pushing Joonha to punch him, humiliating him.

The girls at the school (which is co-ed, but separates the girls and boys into different classes) are odd, though not completely ridiculous. Although some fall hard for the boy Joonha and Taehyun, others -- more, it seems -- are well aware that they're jerks. Their strange quirk, though, is that they all seem to openly crush on the girl Joonha; some simply say that she would be their perfect man, while others just stop and stare at her. Maybe it's just an overdone bit of hero worship for the sake of comedy.

The comedy, might I say, is a little awkward at times, though some of it seems to have a point in the plot -- somehow. Before transforming, Joonha repeatedly worries and is teased about the size of his penis; even his father comments that he "can't really miss something that was that small in the first place." Later, though, it's suggested that this may be because his transformation was actually the beginning of his puberty. The most commonly used word for humor here is "pervert," so much so that in a note on the bottom of one of the pages the author jokes "Maybe I should've named it 'Pervert' instead of 'Click.'"

There's some misuse of the word "transvestite" (I think they were aiming for "transsexual," though I'm not quite sure in this situation that that works). This may be a fault of the translation.

All in all, though, I was pleasantly surprised, though I'm still a little unsure. I'll definitely be buying the second volume, at the very least.

Exciting, romantic,
By Kayjo
This series is exciting, energetic and drives me crazy wondering how things are going to turn out. The art is beautiful and the author is really good at getting the reader to feel what in each character feels. There are no boring people in this shojo. Very good series. Very intense. I absolutely cannot figure out how it is going to end which I can usually do.

By Alison L. Mccabe
Click is a story of growing up and letting go of the past. It tells a story of "walking in others shoes" while being lighthearted and funny at times. I really enjoyed this book because it illustrates just how hard it can be to find yourself and stay true to who you are once you do find it.

SERIOUSLY
By wobbitz
This volume has, at the time of writing this review, received unambiguous praise. As it stands, the reviews are all 5-stars. I am writing this to say that these are all correct, and if anyone posts one that says "come on guys, it doesn't deserve THAT much praise" they are wrong and you should ignore them. Really, you should collect Hickman's entire run on Fantastic Four and FF, because this volume is the culmination of all of those. This run made me feel the sort of wonder I felt when I was twelve or thirteen and watched Lord of the Rings in theaters (I'm a twenty-something now) or read Asimov's Foundation series. I very truly got goosebumps writing this review and thinking about the final couple issues here. It's wonderful in the most literal sense of the word.

Hickman's plotlines collide together, for the perfect Fantastic Four Story.
By Mr. Nergal
***THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR READERS**

Jonathan Hickman started his Run on Fantastic Four after an acclaimed run from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. Hickman brought the book back to what makes the four fantastic and fun, with amazing super-science and perfect characterizations through out his run on the book.

We all know about the death of Johnny Storm caused the birth of the Future Fondation, and the book continued on as the threats of the celestials reigned throught out the background. When I purchase FF # 12, and saw the preview for #600, I knew something was up.

Within this amazingly beautiful hardcover collection is Hickman's final main FF story. The story he has been telling for quite some time now. Collecting #600-604. We see the F4 reunited in a way that feels exactly like a summer blockbuster. A solid story and explination of how the F4 and Earths Mightest Heroes stand before a complete attack on their planet. The F4 shine through out the book, but characters that Hickman adds in to the action sequences are characterized great in their brief scenes. Loved his quick reaction for Cap, a brave man who's willing to work with anyone, as long as they are a man of their word.

The story great, the book amazing. If you've been following Hickman's run, then you wouldn't want to miss out on this. For new readers though, you'll have to read the four Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman books and the first two volumes of FF. Volume coexist with "Forever" but it isn't a necessary read.

Certainly my favorite run of FANTASTIC FOUR ever.
By The Blue Thunder Bomb
Now it's important to realize that this review is going to contain some SPOILERS, so tread carefully.

First off, FANTASTIC FOUR #600 is a masterpiece of storytelling from a number of different perspectives, but ultimately it yields not only a great battle on the horizon, but the return of Johnny Storm, and then an explanation of where he's been. Jonathan Hickman is one of the best and most defiantly intelligent writers in comics currently. I use "defiantly" due to his absolute refusal to pander or to give a lowest-common denominator type of comic. He refuses to dumb it down in order to maybe make his stuff sell better (If you need evidence of that, look to The Manhattan Projects Volume 1: Science Bad TP or Ultimate Comics Ultimates By Jonathan Hickman - Volume 1). The issue is pure sci-fi character-enhanced magic.

The remainder of the arc is an exercise in MIND-BLOWING EPIC SCI-FI ACTION/ADVENTURE AWESOMENESS and it needs to be read by all, but there's one thing that I need to say:

In issue 601, when artist supreme Steve Epting alights the Manhattan skyline with the famous "4" flare, it was one of the most rousing and emotional moments I've seen in recent comics history. It was absolute glory.

Crime Victimization: A Comprehensive Overview, by Elizabeth Quinn, Sara Brightman

Crime Victimization: A Comprehensive Overview provides students with a broad picture of the work done to draw attention to crime victims and the overall effects of victimization, including victim needs for recovery from crime. This text explores victimization at the street crime level, but also delves into less commonly discussed types of victimization including state and corporate crime, hate crime, cybercrime, environmental crime, and workplace violence.

This text addresses the full spectrum of victimization from ''victimless'' crimes to repeat victimizations and provides students with an understanding of why victimization occurs, how victims deal with the aftereffects, what services are available to victims, and how professionals in the criminal justice, medical, religious, and therapeutic fields can both help and hinder victims journeys toward recovery. The evolution of the victims' rights movement, along with the development of national victim service organizations, important pieces of legislation, and international victimological associations are presented to provide students with an idea of the work that practitioners, activists, and researchers have done to both improve services to and enhance our understanding of crime victims overall.

Crime Victimization provides a global understanding of victimization to highlight the impact of the crime phenomenon on the overall human condition. Additionally, students are introduced to burgeoning developments in the victim services field along with profiles of victimologists, victims' rights activities, and victim service providers to help them identify the impact they can have on the field of victimology and on individual crime victims in their chosen fields.

Queen of the Dark Things: A Novel, by C. Robert Cargill

Screenwriter and noted film critic C. Robert Cargill continues the story begun in his acclaimed debut Dreams and Shadows in this bold and brilliantly crafted tale involving fairies and humans, magic and monsters—a vivid phantasmagoria that combines the imaginative wonders of Neil Gaiman, the visual inventiveness of Guillermo Del Toro, and the shocking miasma of William S. Burroughs.

Six months have passed since the wizard Colby lost his best friend to an army of fairies from the Limestone Kingdom, a realm of mystery and darkness beyond our own. But in vanquishing these creatures and banning them from Austin, Colby sacrificed the anonymity that protected him. Now, word of his deeds has spread, and powerful enemies from the past—including one Colby considered a friend—have resurfaced to exact their revenge.

As darkness gathers around the city, Colby sifts through his memories desperate to find answers that might save him. With time running out, and few of his old allies and enemies willing to help, he is forced to turn for aid to forces even darker than those he once battled.

Following such masters as Lev Grossman, Erin Morgenstern, Richard Kadrey, and Kim Harrison, C. Robert Cargill takes us deeper into an extraordinary universe of darkness and wonder, despair and hope to reveal the magic and monsters around us . . . and inside us.

From Booklist
Wizard Colby Stevens, young as he is, has enough bad memories to haunt him for several lifetimes. After he simultaneously won and lost his war with the Limestone Kingdom—banishing the fairy folk from Austin, Texas, but losing his best friend in the process and possibly damning himself—he wants only to be left alone. Unfortunately, a wizard as powerful as Colby can’t hide. In this sequel to Dreams & Shadows, a spirit-walker severed from her body, the shades of cursed mutineers, and “Solomon’s Seventy-Two Demons” converge in Austin. Colby must investigate how these forces are linked and create the impossible: a solution in which he punishes evildoers, rescues those in the right, and satisfies his need for redemption. Although too much of the book is devoted to exposition, including more pseudo-academic essays on magic and many (albeit, significant) philosophical digressions, the pacing explodes once all the major players are in place. Clever plotting influenced by trickster lore, a more hopeful ending, and a new cast of complex and likable characters make this sequel a winner. Fans of Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series will especially like this volume. --Krista Hutley

Review
“Powerful…. Brimming with philosophical conundrums… Cargill’s world is abundant in detail and imagery in the service of the story. … Will keep readers entranced.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Hard to put down…this is definitely going to attract readers of contemporary fantasy, particular those who enjoy Neil Gaiman’s adult books or Lev Grossman’s The Magicians.” (Library Journal)

“As a result, Dreams and Shadows is a potent introduction to a world where the wondrous is rarely wonderful, the best intentions are guaranteed to roam farthest astray, and the reader is destined to keep turning the pages until the (somewhat) bitter end.” (BookPage)

“A thoroughly enchanting debut novel” (Starburstmagazine.com)

“In this beautifully written debut.... The universe is richly detailed, and issues of destiny and sacrifice give the story depth…for those that enjoy a rollercoaster ride into the depths of strangeness and despair.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Exceptional worldbuilding, sure-handed plotting and well-rounded characters, even the nasty ones, abound, and the whole impressive enterprise moves smartly along through a fairy culture with a structure and motivations sharply different from that of humans. A mesmerizing and highly original debut.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“Richly imagined...an auspicious debut.” (Booklist)

“Dark, comedic, and unsettling, Dreams and Shadows is everything an urban fantasy sets out to be.” (Tor.com)

“Cargill proves with Dreams and Shadows that he’s not just a writer capable of creating and presenting dense mythology well (Breitbart/ Big Hollywood)

“[T]his is a fantasy about mythmaking, learning the uses of power, and living with the consequences of one’s behavior. Recommended for readers of Lev Grossman’s Magicians series and Neil Gaiman’s adult contemporary fantasies.” (Library Journal on QUEEN OF THE DARK THINGS)

“Cargill’s screenwriting chops bring to life a vivid mix of real and imaged folklore in his fantastical second novel. While the mix of urban fantasy, Guillermo Del Toro-like monsters and academic explanations of this magical world shouldn’t work, it absolutely does.” (No Source on QUEEN OF THE DARK THINGS)

A Gem That Needed More Time to Dust Itself Off
By Fake Name
It's been a little bit over a year since Cargill released his debut novel, "Dreams and Shadows." Pumped out approximately 365 days since the first installment in the purported series, "Queen of the Dark Things" comes off as a jumble of ideas that never really mesh together.

Set in Austin, Texas a few months after the cataclysmic battle that capped off the last book, the sequel finds protagonist and sorcerer extraordinaire Colby Stevens in a depressed rut as he harbors deep-seated guilt over the death of his childhood friend Ewan Thatcher and the implications of Colby's involvement in it. That's just the set-up. The story proper deals with a variety of plot points such as the shadowy kutji, a childhood friend gone rogue, a centuries-old curse, and a host of seventy-two demons bent on revenge. This all sounds cool in theory, but the haste with which these things are thrown together is reminiscent of the manatee tank from South Park: it feels like the author rolled a fistful of eight-sided dye covered in mythological concepts and then just duck-taped the results together to the best of his ability.

Which caps off the primary problem of this book: "Queen of the Dark Things" reeks of a contractual deadline. Like the first book, this second installment feels a bit scatterbrained, constantly switching viewpoints, plots, and failing to coalesce into a satisfying whole. But the feeling is much more pronounced here, to the point that the thing even feels a bit "unprofessional" at times. The book is even filled with a litany of typos that are so obvious they'd make any random editor's head spin.

Cargill's imagination is wild, but it's clear that the reach of his ambition is greater than his grasp will allow. The issue doesn't exactly lie with the writer or even the book itself - this novel largely feels like a first draft that received a brief once-over before being shipped off to the printing press. The prose is noticeably better in some places in others - almost jarringly so - and it seems obvious by the book's end that the author needed more time to tweak the fine edges.

But when "Queen of the Dark Things" works, it does it in spades. Select chunks of dialogue crackle with wit, a few set pieces are astounding, and the story manages to introduce a (almost literal) choir of interesting characters in a short amount of time. But for every victory, a joke falls flat, an important scene fails to make an impact, and a cool character is introduced and then forgotten about ten pages later. While I enjoyed "Dreams and Shadows" immensely, it's very obvious that the original was allowed a much longer gestation time than its sequel.

The author deserves his success, but this book falls short of the standard set by the original. Hopefully Cargill can pull the series out its newfound rut in time to salvage what remains a promising saga and - if the gods permit - his publishers will give him the time to pull it off.

I Was Disappointed In This Book, But You May Not Be
By Shawn Kovacich
Six months after the end of Dreams and Shadows, the wizard Colby is just getting by. Ewan’s death has hit him hard. Then he is charged with finding missing demons. It seems a friend/not so friend from Colby’s past has something to do with the missing demons. Now Colby is trying to survive as many deadly creatures are tracking him down.

So I have to say that I just couldn’t get into this book. The first thing was the chapters where you are reading notes from a book. Argh! These are so annoying. It’s just like I’m back in school. There has to be another way to get information across to the reader.

Then there are all these characters. There are a bunch introduced and none of them really clicked for me. I think part of it was the dialogue seemed forced. The story just didn’t flow. And I did feel for Colby losing his friend but come on all ready. Doing stupid stuff and getting in more trouble is not going to help.

I was disappointed. I couldn’t get into the book and I had a hard time reading it. I think some that read Dreams and Shadows might like Queen of the Dark Things, but I’m not one of them.

Austin has never looked weirder
By kyshakitty
I received this book through the Harper Voyager super reader program.

So this book is way darker than Dreams and Shadows in many ways. The new characters are darker but so is Colby. The situations he finds himself in are also much darker and more dire.

It starts with a story from a distant land in a time long past that really seems to have nothing to do with our journey but we are wrong. Then we pick up Colby's story several months after Dreams and Shadows ended. He is mourning all he lost and not coping all that well. Everything reminds him of the friends he lost and he is somewhat self destructive. That self destruction is what leads him to his latest "adventure". During this "adventure", he/we meet many new, mostly frightening, characters. They include his old friend, Kaycee, and his new friend, Austin. There are several times that Colby questions who the Queen is and we question right along with him. I actually was not surprised when it was revealed, but I has thought it was someone else from the first book. We are taken back to some of Colby's time between part one and two of Dreams and Shadows. The Clever Man who cared for Colby during Yashar's absence is both frustrating and helpful to Colby and us. Once again Colby's arrogance and ignorance lead him into trouble and he has to eliminate many creatures. We find out how the new characters relate to the story in the beginning along the way. In the end he sets many creatures free and both he and Kaycee find their true destinies.

I liked this book better than the first one once we get past the whining and self-pitying Colby. Kaycee is a welcome addition to the story line. She is the other half of Colby to me. She possesses characteristics that he is lacking and he has come she is lacking. She is more adventurous and less fearful, but she acknowledges that she has limits. Colby feels he is all powerful, but he uses his heart more than she does. Gossomer is a great friend but I feel sad for him because his dog traits make him too eager to please. A golden retriever as a familiar is a terrible idea because they are obedient to a fault. I assume that is why witches use cats, they are obedient to no one. Once again I didn't care for Yashar, but I hated Mandu. I guess being a Clever Man means playing both sides but screwing with kids heads is just wrong.

Austin is pretty much what I would expect the spirit of the city to be. I imagined a female Willie Nelson and that is basically what Cargill gave us. She is country with some hippie and yuppie thrown in. I am sure if you stroll down 6th street any saturday evening you will find at least 10 people that fit her description (yes I said people, "keep Austin weird" is not just a slogan it is a way of life).

This book takes place in Austin and central Texas again but also includes Australia and other more exotic foreign locations. I assume that Cargill did a lot of research on each place to create the settings. I could picture each one easily. I want to comment Cargill on his knowledge of multi-cultural folklore. I am sure some things were made up but I have heard or read about many the creatures, symbols, and rituals he discusses. I am a fan of folklore and legends so I was fairly impressed. The passages by Dr. Thaddeus Ray, PhD add that air of authenticity once again and show how much research Cargill must have done.

There isn't much I disliked about the book. I feel Colby is too whiny and pitiful in the beginning and very self doubting. Yashar is very doubting and just a grouch for a lot of the book. I would have liked more information about Colby's time in Australia and about the kutji, since I have never heard that word before.

I hope that if Cargill feels the need to make this a trilogy that the 3rd book is about Kaycee.

An Compassionate Alternative to Tradition
By Brey A.
One page read aloud and one image shared (the book's cover on an overhead transparency)aroused a thirst for more as I listened to a review of this new collection of fairytales. As I sat in the audience of over eighty other English teachers, gathering notes about new adolescent literature, my ears perked up as the eloquent speaker, a very conventional looking lady, gave accolades to this potentially controversial anthology. Once I bought a copy and read it for myself I admired the author's clever skill at delicately weaving each tale to the next, taking every opportunity to dispell the subtle patriarchal oppressive seeds of thought planted by their traditional ancestors. As a literary instructor, I put much faith in the science and art of bibliotherapy (using books to address emotional and psychological issues). This book is excellant balm for a young lady confronting her emerging sexuality, should it diverge from mass cultural expectations. Furthermore it is a vivid example of how a story can be beautifully retold, keeping the frame of the original but explaining something much deeper than "happily ever-after." I would not limit this book by saying that its only audience is comprised of lesbians, bisexuals, or adolescents. It is a book from which we can all gain lessons of tolerance, peace, and a deeper understanding of human emotion.

The truth of the fairy tale is the power of a woman.
By A Customer
I impulsively picked up this book because of the name & cover design. I had no idea that it was directed at an adolescent audience until I was about to order one as a gift for one on my heroes. I read it through with delight and anticipation for each story to come. I think this is an excellent book for women of any age. It provides our younger siblings with an alternative to all things boys. Its life affirming with out sentimental illusions, and portrays the other side of the story, our side, with humor & accuracy seldom seen. It takes the fairy tale back from the Grimm brothers, and their superstitious fears about women with knowledge, self determination and freedom. I loved it and have a list a mile long of friends I'll be sharing it with.

Wonderful, almost cryptic retellings of classics
By A Customer
I picked up the book on a whim. My friends gave me curious looks as I explained it was a retelling of fairy tales. As I started to read it (I consumed it in one sitting), I realized it was much more. The problem with fairy tales is that they provide this bland, generalistic view of what romance is, what a woman is, what a man is. And the view is incorrect. These tales are wonderful in their change of the old stories. These are not simple retellings. Quite often it took me a lot of the story to realize which fairy tale it was. It is great for any age, either sex, and people who prefer pretty much any genre of story. I loved this book as a writer and a reader.
