A must read for all Australians, or anyone trying to understand why so many First Peoples around the world hunger for recognition in the formal documents of the land they live in.
It is incredible that the Australian Constitution still doesn't place Aboriginal Australians on an equal footing with the rest of the country.
There are lots thoughts in the book which are eyeopening, like the mainstream neglect of Aboriginal culture and heritage which is literally dying out.
> In 2001, the world watched aghast as the Taliban dynamited and destroyed the 1700-year-old Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan. Treasures of older lineage are in danger of being lost to our nation through blindness and neglect rather than vandalism.
The essay reminded me of Ta-Nehisi Coates case for reparations for American blacks, who still suffer the consequences of slavery and racial discrimination decades after formal integration into American society.
While constitutional equality is in many ways just a symbolic gesture, both Coates and Noel argue that these gestures and the discussions which occur before they are formalized are essential to healing old wounds and moving forward. It is only the powerful who dismiss the importance of all this since they are too privileged to even begin to understand the past and it's ongoing lingering on effects for so many.

Another book - "The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America" actually did a better job of the many many ways settlers suppressed Native Peoples well after formal recognition, and hence the importance of doing the right thing by them now.
Anyways there is a lot in Noel's essay, read it!

Pearson offers an articulate and well-structured treatise explaining why “closing the gap” microeconomic measures are no more than a political expedient to ignore the continuation of cultural destruction. Framing his argument around quotes from Darwin, Dickens and Wells is revelatory. His relentless prosecution of truth about the genocide of full-blooded Tasmanians combines political and legalistic perspectives effectively. He acknowledges the complexity of this history, particularly the debt of three generations of his own family to the care of Lutheran missionaries.
Some of Pearson’s logically laid out points, for example about the nature of conservatism, align directly with his argument. His disinclination to have race as a specific reference in a new Constitution may be unexpected, but he is on the mark. Person has moved beyond superficial and platitudinous reform and, for the most part at least, erred clear of political views or other patronage. His insistence for the complementarity of language and culture is an urgent call to continue the work recording aboriginal languages while we can.
The urgency of recognition of the past and present in order to better shape a just future for all Australians is central to Pearson’s essay, and his structured argument is timely.

Is this a political essay? Is this history? Is this morality? Is this social theory? Is this literature? Is this art? The answer is yes. If you are reading this review then you are thinking about reading this essay. My only advice is to read it twice. I learned more in 2 hours than I have in a long time. I wept. My way of thinking changed.
