The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir

Upon completing "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" in 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald declared it "the funniest story ever written" and "one of my two favorite stories." It's the strange tale of a man who is "born" 70 years old and mysteriously ages in reverse. This stunning graphic novel adaptation illustrates Benjamin Button's many adventures: He falls in love, starts a family, and runs a successful business. In his later years, he goes to war and attends Harvard University. As an old man, he resembles a newborn baby and returns to the care of a nurse. Complete with Fitzgerald's original text, dazzling watercolor illustrations, and an afterword describing the story's origins and critical reception, this edition offers a fresh look at a literary masterpiece.

From Publishers Weekly
The impending release of a movie version starring Brad Pitt has made this humorous tale, formerly among the least known of Fitzgerald's short stories, a hot property. DeFillippis and Weir's adaptation preserves the original's straight-faced tone describing the career of a man who begins life in his 70s and grows progressively younger. If bystanders find this more than curious, they usually are just irritated at Benjamin for not behaving like other people. He himself is surprised as his body morphs, but is always open to new possibilities; his good-natured adaptability gives the social satire a gentle edge. Readers should, of course, look up Fitzgerald's original, but there's much to enjoy in this handsome little hardbound book. Cornell's sepia watercolor panels are especially clever at showing physical and emotional changes as Benjamin moves backward through life while America rolls forward for 70 years. A useful, gracefully written afterword by Donald G. Sheehy, professor of English, completes the volume nicely. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—In antebellum Maryland, the Button family is gifted with a wizened newborn whose physical age seems to grow ever younger over time. The scholarly afterword to this meticulous volume mentions the recent film adaptation of Fitzgerald's Jazz Age story, but it would be a mistake to assume that this volume has been created simply because of the media tie-in. It is a strikingly literal adaptation, re-creating dialogue, narration, and even chapter breaks with an assured and deliberate hand. While Fitzgerald's light tone is well preserved, it is the artwork that is the most striking, despite what could be construed as a dour use of gray and sepia. It is highly evocative, with an excellent use of facial expression to moving and comic effect. As the story obviously must address the particulars of physical age, Cornell depicts not just the transformation of Benjamin's face, but also his changing poise and confidence with well-rendered body language. While a thoroughly fine work, the lightly funny, softly satiric material will not produce peals of laughter, and the subject matter may strike teens as more unusual than engaging. Still, this is a work of quality that should find a small but appreciative audience.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

From Booklist
One of Fitzgerald’s (until recently) lesser-known stories, this satire follows the life of a man born as a septuagenarian who progresses through life backwards, becoming younger and younger each year. Here, the story is reproduced as a graphic novel, with sepia-toned art that lends itself to the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century time period. While this effort is admirable for the fact that it has Fitzgerald’s original text nearly intact (save some abridgement for the sake of dialogue), some of the time-sensitive satirical elements may not resonate with young readers. Still, growing old by growing young holds a certain universal curiosity, and extends the appeal of this to readers other than Fitzgerald fans or those looking for new entry-points into classic literature. Of course, the big-budget movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt will only amplify interest. An afterword provides some context for this work in the whole of Fitzgerald’s oeuvre, and offers a nicely ironic aside to his agent in which he despaired that it was unlikely this story “will ever bring me any movie money.” Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

My curiosity was satisfied with this rather peculiar tale...
By Andrew Ellington
I am not a huge fan of short stories, because it never fails that by the time I find myself invested in them I have reached the last page. Same can be said for `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', a rather delightful little story that is engaging, interesting and very rewarding. Yes, this is a short story, so I'm going to say this straight off; you may not want to invest your money in this version. I actually purchased another version from Amazon that has a few short stories for less money, so try you hand at that collection instead of this singular novel.

But, I wanted to take the time to review the story, because that's what these reviews are all about right, the work itself and not the packaging.

`The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' is a peculiar tale of a man born at the end of his life and has the rare opportunity of growing young, living his life in reverse as it were. F. Scott Fitzgerald states at the beginning of this story that it was inspired by a statement made by Mark Twain, that the best things in life happen at the beginning and the worst at the end. With `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' Fitzgerald plays the cynic, exploring how living life in reverse can be seemingly beneficial yet ultimately devastating.

Benjamin is born a brittle old man with a cane (not literally, but he needs one) and a full mind, and as the year's progress his relationships with those around him shift for various reasons. First he is at odds with his devastated parents who are ashamed of him, but as he grows to meet his father in age they become like brothers. He meets and falls in love with the young Hildegarde, who is attracted to the `older' Benjamin, only to marry her, grow younger than her, and drift apart from her. He takes over his fathers business and prospers because of his newfound energy, yet his youth begins to destroy him as his own son becomes his elder and is thus ashamed of the very sight of his father.

There is a moment within `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' where the elderly Benjamin (in mind, not in physicality) is attending kindergarten and is lamenting over the fact that the other children can talk about what they want to be when they grow up, a prospect that Benjamin will never see.

This to me captures the very point of this story.

Yes, this is a short story of a few pages and it moves rather quickly through Benjamin's life, but it is also written with such rich detail that one never feels jaded. I do wish that this had been written as a full length novel, for it surely has the potential to be one of the most refreshing and moving pieces of literature ever written. It is wildly original (although Fitzgerald himself has mentioned that he has read this prose elsewhere) and it is absurdly poignant. Yes, `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' has such a deep-rooted importance, for when you strip away the preposterousness of the prose there is a moral that is so humanly real we can feel it in the very pit of us.

We have all heard the phrase `the grass is greener on the other side' and this novel is the perfect answer back to that statement, for it proves that we shouldn't always be wishing for something we don't quite understand, because once we have it we may realize it is far from desired.

Beautiful book design, but what's inside?
By Stephen L. Powell
Tales of the Jazz Age (Penguin Classics Hardcover) does not contain the original contents of the 1922 book of the same title. This edition contains the following eight stories.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Head and Shoulders
The Cut-Glass Bowl
The Four Fists
May Day
'O Russet Witch!'
Bernice Bobs Her Hair
The Lees of Happiness

Of these stories five are also included in Flappers and Philosophers: The Collected Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald (Penguin Classics Hardcover). If you're buying these books as a book collector (like me) you'll want both titles because they are gorgeous editions. If however you're not intending on buying both I suggest purchasing Flappers and Philosophers instead as it has the majority of these stories plus many more.

AVOID THE "TIMELESS CLASSICS" EDITION
By J. A. I.
Avoid the Timeless Classics edition. It is a mess. Far from being "carefully formatted" it is in fact full of typos and odd formatting choices that distract and detract from the enjoyment of Fitzgerald's stories. If you wish to save money just download the free version which is certainly no worse than the awful Timeless Classic edition.

If you want a better file try one of the more expensive editions.

If anyone at the "publisher" (or at Amazon) cares I would appreciate a refund on this ebook or a free download of a better edition.

Chilling
By Jeffrey Ginther
The title of a book often leads us to look further. The cover photo draws us in a bit more. Certainly if we know the author, we are more inclined to pick it up and read further. The open lines drew me in, as they would any compassionate reader. And then the meat of the story unfolds like a chilling nightmare. As a physician, this story is near and dear. Although never drawn inro a lawsuit, I have had some brushes with some of the experiences explored here. In fact, the story seems almost biographical in nature and I would suspect that the 'research' is based on first hand experience to some degree. The fact that the location of the events are so thinly, but obviously, covered by a facade indicates a real threat out there.

It seems incredible to most folks that regulatory boards and the legal system would treat the honored profession so shabbily, but the truth of the matter, the regulatory boards often have a mission to 'protect' the 'innocent' public from the 'preying' professional to a fault. I do wonder about the individuals who make up various boards, what their backgrounds are. I will not comment about attorneys except to say that I have some very good friends...

After reading this tragic tale, one comes to realize that the physician is in a better place, and that the investigator is somewhat drained. and then one wonders, what profession is going to be targeted next... we all see increasing regulations and punishments...

My hat is off to Mrs. Stahl for this 'expose', and I look forward to her next venture. Jeff Ginther

`Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.'- Friedrich Nietzsche
By Grady Harp
Australian born author Marion A. Stahl, now living near Washington DC, has 30 years of experience in the health care sector as a medical writer: she is also the author of `A Modern Salem Witch Trial', `Anita', `Anita's Piano: A Witness to History' and `Hope and Perseverance'. She has received many honors for her work in the field of medicine. And if committing the words of a modern day WW II survivor of heroic experiences into the form of a memoir about the indomitable core of the human soul can be considered both medical as well as historical novel material, then Stahl has reached a zenith.

As is Marion's bent she has written a new book to investigate the multiple facets of the problematic status of American Medicine. Few writers have the ability to present a case for the need for change as well as Marion's realistic, carefully considered from all angles stance. She brings not only her own history into play but instead of creating tropes to identify as characters she instead refers to well considered life situations. The result: a profoundly moving book that holds a magnifying glass to medicine in this country.

`My husband Paul, known as `Doc Fournier' in town, is busy with a booming family medical practice. He works very long hours and sees up to forty patients a day. His high demand is due to a shortage of general medical practitioners. I am the Editor for the Harvard Health Newsletter.' And so we know our fictional character's background and her personal story of encountering long waits in emergency rooms, similar stories from her friends that opens her investigation of the paucity of providers, and now outright denial of medical treatments. She brings the reader `on a mystery hunt of what I have learned so far. The topic, our present health care will be the subject of this novel. I can think a many great scenes for this endeavor. My intensions are not to create fear of hospitals or doctors. I would like to paint a better understanding by bringing readers to the back room of these offices. Perhaps it could bring some light as to why we have a shortage of physicians and why we have lost so many valuable one.'

As a well written example she relates the practice and life of one Dr. Helene Quaile whose devotion to the well-being and care and health of her patients gets mired down in the modus operandi of manipulators, the corruption of payers such as insurance companies, the plethora of lawyers and the growing paucity of physicians who have become disenchanted with the concept of healing with the increasing encroachment of technical instrumentation both for treatment of disease and the charging of fees for patients who at times fall into the category of facilitators. `Our reimbursement system rewards those who perform "procedures," but not physician's time taking a good history that might save on cost of tests, In other words; one is paid more for looking in a patient's rectum as in performing sigmoidoscopies and colonoscopies, and almost none for speaking to them, listening to their symptoms and making a wise decision of whether to send them for procedures.' `I was worried about what was happening in the medical field. The news was dominated by stories of problems with physicians and roadblocks in healthcare, but none of them made sense to me. Doctors' fees accounted for less than a fourth of our total health care costs, and yet the media pointed fingers at them as if they were felons who overcharged for their services. How would lower doctors fees solve high healthcare costs, though? Our country appeared more and more legalistic and bureaucratic, and the future of the entire field seemed bleak.'

This book is not simple an exposé (though it is that, too) but a novel of compassion and caring and concern by one very talented writer and humanist. Highly Recommended for those in the healthcare fields and for all beings who may at some point be a patient. Grady Harp, August 15

A bureaucratic legal monstrosity
By Ian J. Miller
This is fiction that presents in a documentary form the case that America's medical system is broken. I do not know how valid the points made in the novel are, and this review is based on the assumption they are valid. The argument is that approximately 100,000 general medical practitioners have had their licenses revoked by court action, mainly following the Clinton period efforts to reduce medical costs, and which have presumably been kept going ever since. The story follows Anna, who happens to know a Doctor Helene Quaile, and Helene stops practicing for health reasons, and to keep pests away, keeps all her correspondence coming through a mail center. Enter a prosecutor, who gets "points" for the number of doctors he can decommission, and Helene is an easy target because when he sends notices to out-of-date addresses, she does not receive them, and hence does not turn up to defend herself against trumped up charges. What eventuates is a corrupt bureaucratic nightmare, with a touch of Kafka, except that Helene is not objecting because she is unaware. This is a specific example, but according to the author, the points made are general.

What follows is an account of the court proceedings, and a note on the economics. Such a doctor accused should roll over, give the prosecutor what he wants, or fight a legal battle that won't be won, but will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. This is a terrible indictment of the American legal system, the insurance system, and the bureaucracy on doctors. The documentary form is done very well, and it feels as if it could be true. The characters, other than Anna, are more caricatures, aimed at painting the plot, but then again, that is a technique that Dickens made his own to show sociological problems. Stahl is not up to Dickens' writing standard, but who is? Apart from some editing issues, well done.

The Speech: The Story Behind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream, by Gary Younge

AudioFile Best Audiobooks―Biography and History, 2014

The night before the March on Washington in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. asked his aides for advice about the next day's speech. "Don't use the lines about 'I have a dream'," Wyatt Walker told him "It's trite, it's cliché. You've used it too many times already."

Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered at least 350 talks in 1963 alone. Countless speeches have been delivered on civil rights and, indeed, many others beside Martin Luther King's were delivered at the March on Washington. So what was it that made that particular speech historical? Why do we remember it? How do we remember it? And what about it have we chosen to forget?

Gary Younge examines what made the speech so timely...and so timeless. Few at that time could imagine the world he was evoking but to achieve its aims, all had to believe it was possible. Fifty years on it is clear that in eliminating segregation―not racism but formal, codified, explicit discrimination―the civil rights movement delivered the last significant moral victory in America for which there is still a consensus. The speech's appeal endures because it remains the most eloquent, poetic, unapologetic, and public articulation of that victory.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, author and Nation columnist Younge (Who Are We-And Should It Matter in the 21st Century?) carefully examines the political and emotional climate of August, 1963. In the weeks preceding, there were 758 related demonstrations in 186 cities all of which added to the "condition that made the March on Washington possible and King's speech so resonant." As Clarence Jones, who helped draft the speech, later reflected, "Text without context, in this case especially, would be quite a loss." Younge takes on this mission in his terse book, which is divided into three parts: "The Moment," "The March," and "The Legacy." He provides just enough context to convey the anticipation and chaos leading up to the speech and adds meaningful layers to the rhetoric. Vivid details instill the emotional importance of the event. Younge balances his account using outside and original commentary from rhetoricians, activists, and scholars, including different interpretations of the speech itself and its relevance in the civil rights movement. A grand blend of history, horrors, and honor.

From Booklist
Fifty years after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington, that refrain has resonated across time and geography, continuing to inspire movements for freedom and equality and giving King’s speech memorable status. Younge, journalist and columnist for the Guardian and the Nation, considers King’s speech in the context of its significance in the U.S. and abroad. Exploring the factors that determine how speeches are remembered and whether they are remembered at all, Younge details the context of the August 1963 speech, in the tumultuous year that started with Alabama governor George Wallace declaring eternal segregation in the South and ended with President Kennedy’s assassination. He details the long, sleepless night of preparation, the dramatic moment when King turned over his prepared speech and delivered remarks from his heart, using the phrase many had advised against, warning that it was trite and overused. Despite its lukewarm reception at the time, the speech has gone on to resound throughout the world—in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe—as an appeal for justice and equality 50 years after it was so famously uttered. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"[In] this slim but powerful book... Younge is adept at both distilling the facts and asking blunt questions."
—Boston Globe

"Unequivocal . . ."
—Financial Times

"[An] often highly entertaining saga of the clashing egos engaged in the drafting... [with] a compelling, beat-by-beat analysis of a myth's creation: King's delivery of 'the Speech' on the day."
—The Independent

"Younge provides new insight into the roles of key civil rights leaders in a captivating story that is eloquently written and punctuated with surprising detail. More importantly, the book sheds new light on Dr. King and paints him in a way that portrays the true grit and determination that stuck with him like the many followers he inspired and led."
—The Grio

"It is refreshing to find an opus like this being published on the 50th anniversary to remind us of the true meaning of Dr. King’s moving remarks. Younge... does a masterful job of not only dissecting Dr. King’s words, but of filling in much of the back story to the events leading up to his taking the podium."
—Kam Williams, Baltimore Afro-American

"Martin Luther King's 1963 'I have a dream' speech was a thrilling milestone in the civil rights movement, so enduring that we tend to attribute its searing power to a kind of magic. But Gary Younge's meditative retrospection on its significance reminds us of all the micro-moments of transformation behind the scenes--the thought and preparation, vision and revision--whose currency fed that magnificent lightning bolt in history."
—Patricia J. Williams

"Younge needs only a few words to get to the root of the matter, doing so with a gut punch as the topic requires... [he] offers an insightful and unvarnished interpretation of the speech [and its] aftermath."

Timely and timeless in its own right
By Lisa (Leigh) Patel
Younge's short but powerful book on Dr. King's legendary speech is nothing less than a primer on the ways that racial identity shape perception and practices. In reading this short book, we understand why the speech is abridged, how it is (mis)understood and why. Reading Younge's analysis of the historical and contemporary contexts of this speech helps a reader to understand how the election of the nation's first African American president is simultaneously celebrated and villified.

Revisiting the speech....
By Vernon
"THE SPEECH" is an important requirement for me personally, as the effect it had on me personally back in 1963 was a cathartic experience that would stay with me through my childhood, and up to now, into my senior years. I was born in the Caribbean and grew up in London, England. When I went to school in the days following the speech, everyone seemed to be galvanised by the elements of MLK' s speech at the Washington Memorial. I hadn't up until this point in my young life taken more than a pass interest in the issues of civil rights. Our "English teacher" changed the lesson plan for that and several other lessons following the speech to search out our collective feelings on the content of the speech. I remember the feeling of taking part in something very, very special as well as something directly relating to me personally, even while the event happened so far away. I also related to MLK and his work as my parents and peer group related to it over and over in the years since. This book brings some new insights and even clearer understanding of the substance as well as the progressive nature of Dr. King and the rest of the civil rights leadership. This book reads like a fly-on-the-wall retelling of a movement, of which, I have no doubt contributed in no small measure to President Obama's election victory and fulfilling in great measure the dreams and aspirations of hundreds of millions of Americans at home, as well as billions of people across the globe. Gary Young's retelling of this version 50 years later is at once: timely, poetic in delivery and fills in some very important issues relating to Dr. King and the issues driving the civil rights leadership. This book is required reading for students of history and others interested in the way that current events are perceived with the passage of time.

A Great Study of this Historical Speech
By mtayl75234
The fact that the author, Gary Younge, is foreign born is truly amazing. He captured the essence of not just the "Speech" but of the most important fact, the "Times" and what was going on when Dr King wrote and delivered this famous speech. It's as if he personally experienced what it was like during this awful time in my history. I was taken back to that period and lived again some of the terrible feelings we had as an African American born in a land where we were not wanted. And, not only that, where we were treated as slaves. What is more are still not given the respect and rights that we were born to have.

Lords of Secrecy: The National Security Elite and America's Stealth Warfare, by Scott Horton

Forty years ago, a majority of Americans were highly engaged in issues of war and peace. Whether to go to war or keep out of conflicts was a vital question at the heart of the country’s vibrant, if fractious, democracy. But American political consciousness has drifted. In the last decade, America has gone to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, while pursuing a new kind of warfare in Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and Pakistan. National security issues have increasingly faded from the political agenda, due in part to the growth of government secrecy.

In lucid and chilling detail, journalist and lawyer Scott Horton shows how secrecy has changed the way America functions. Executive decisions about war and peace are increasingly made by autonomous, self-directing, and unaccountable national security elites. Secrecy is justified as part of a bargain under which the state promises to keep the people safe from its enemies, but in fact allows excesses, mistakes, and crimes to go unchecked. Bureaucracies use secrets to conceal their mistakes and advance their power in government, invariable at the expense of the rights of the people. Never before have the American people had so little information concerning the wars waged in their name, nor has Congress exercised so little oversight over the war effort. American democracy is in deep trouble.

Lords of Secrecy explores the most important national security debates of our time, including the legal and moral issues surrounding the turn to private security contractors, the sweeping surveillance methods of intelligence agencies, and the use of robotic weapons such as drones. Horton looks at the legal edifice upon which these decisions are based and discusses approaches to rolling back the flood of secrets that is engulfing America today.Whistleblowers, but also Congress, the public, and the media, play a vital role in this process.

As the ancient Greeks recognized, too much secrecy changes the nature of the state itself, transforming a democracy into something else. Horton reminds us that dealing with the country’s national security concerns is both a right and a responsibility of a free citizenry, something that has always sat at the heart of any democracy that earns the name.

Review
"[D]etails some remarkable abuses.... It is hard not to extrapolate from these tales a notion of a vast secret state beyond control. Horton does so with some finesse. The book is compelling."—Sam Jones, Financial Times

"Big Brother is watching indeed. This useful book catches him in the act and even offers some thoughts on how to poke his eyes out."—Kirkus Reviews

“A chilling but truthful account of how US national security and intelligence agencies are undermining democracy in the United States while the politicians are conceding space to them. It is virtually an indictment of the US national security elites. Every American who cares about democracy should read this book.”—Washington Book Review

"Scott Horton delivers the goods on many fronts. In covering two points of the stealth triangle upfront, he focuses his sights on how the evolution of the U.S. drone program, from spying on terrorists to targeting and killing them with surgical strikes, has run amok...Anyone in or outside the legal profession who doubts the unfettered growth of the U.S. security apparatus, with ramifications beyond NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s intel dump to the public, should read Lords of Secrecy.”—Law.com

"A clear-eyed, deeply informed analysis that reveals the full extent of the threat posed by a Surveillance State that functions in darkness and secrecy. But far from being merely descriptive, Lords of Secrecy also catalogues and assesses the tools that citizens in a democracy can use to fight back.” —Glenn Greenwald

"Scott Horton’s Lords of Secrecy is a brilliantly devastating exposé of the shadow government that runs US national security policy. No matter who wins the White House, this secretive clique retains control over America’s darkest secrets and will stop at nothing to keep them from the public. Its members' names are largely unknown and its actions unchecked. In an era of an unprecedented war against whistleblowers, and the very existence of a free press, Horton’s book provides an essential playbook for battling this undemocratic beast.”—Jeremy Scahill, author of Blackwater and Dirty Wars

“A government accountable to its citizens is one of the foundations of a democratic society. Horton demonstrates how secrecy corrodes democratic institutions, stifles the freedom of information, and protects the powerful from accountability. Lords of Secrecy makes the case that in order to strengthen the rule of law and keep government power in check, we must demand critical debate, civic participation, and above all, transparency.”—George Soros

“This book will resonate widely, a searing indictment of the national security state that undermines the very values it purports to protect. Scott Horton is a consistent, powerful voice against the abuses of power, an apostle for reason and liberty under the law.” —Philippe Sands, professor of law at the University of London and author of Torture Team: Rumsfeld's Memo and the Betrayal of American Values

“From drone wars to Middle East fiascos to the war on whistleblowers, Scott Horton brilliantly blends original reporting with a reasoned defense of democratic ideals going back to ancient Athens. Lucid, learned, judicious, and hard-hitting, Lords of Secrecy is an indispensable book for any reader interested in public affairs.” —David Luban, professor of law and philosophy at Georgetown University

“Scott Horton has revealed the real secret at the heart of all the exposes about the NSA, torture, the Iraq War, the CIA spying on the Congress: it's the secrecy. And by understanding the secret of secrecy, Horton discloses just how the mysticism surrounding it has created a momentum that threatens what Hannah Arendt once called ‘a crisis of the republic.’”—Sidney Blumenthal

"Lords of Secrecy is one of the most important contributions to the vital debate about democracy in the post-Cold War era yet published. Scott Horton diligently peels away layers of hypocritical rhetoric designed to obscure what has been happening. This is a call to arms: American democracy is under threat and the power of increasingly unaccountable agencies must be brought under control." —Misha Glenny, author of McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld

“In his theoretically sophisticated and eye-opening book, Scott Horton brilliantly traces the many documented follies of the American national security establishment and examines the unjustifiable use of government secrecy. The lethal challenge to the survival of the country’s democratic principles has never been more chillingly diagnosed." —Stephen Holmes, professor of law at New York University and author of The Matador's Cape: America's Reckless Response to Terror

"Scott Horton has written a lucid and captivating opus magnum, spanning a wide range of topics from constitutional law, to espionage, to drone warfare, and from Pericles to Ed Snowden. It is a must-read for the scholars and practitioners of national security. It is permeated with a real love of our country and a burning concern for the future of our democracy. Horton recognizes secrecy as a necessity, but brilliantly delimits it and exposes its abuses and failures, as lords of secrecy failed to adequately assess the Soviet Union, predict its collapse, warn about 9/11, and forecast the recent Arab Uprisings. A gem of a book."—Ariel Cohen, Visiting Fellow, The Heritage Foundation

The Chapter Epigraphs Alone Are Worth the Price of Admission
By Barry Eisler
A superb examination of the ever-ratcheting regime of official secrecy that is inexorably strangling democracy in America. The chapter epigraphs alone are worth the price of admission. I had to resist the urge to live blog my reactions because there’s so much I loved about this book.

At times depicting a bureaucratic world worthy of Joseph Heller or Kafka, the book is a clear and compelling call for citizens to recognize secrecy for what it is: a weakness, not a strength; an addiction, not a choice; a disease of democracy and ultimately democracy’s death. For anyone who wants to arrest the domestic growth of the same kind of sclerosis that enfeebled and ultimately ended the Soviet Union, The Lords of Secrecy is an excellent place to start.

The Fix
By Keith A. Comess
It's a bit difficult to conceive of a book on US government transgressions that can remain both interesting and current in the context of the ongoing Snowden revelations, but "Lords of Secrecy" accomplishes both goals. Not only that, it does so in a compelling, objective, direct and cogent manner. It succeeds by avoiding the taint of more polemical expositions (see, for example, Glenn Greenwald's book) and sticking to the facts as they are known.

Scott Horton is a lawyer by training and practice. To provide necessary context, he carefully yet succinctly summarizes relevant legal proceedings and describes how these have been consistently and practically transgressed by a succession of US Executive Branch office holders. In short, the bureaucratic compulsion to divorce government from the citizenry has not only been a cumulative process, it has obvious underpinnings in the composition of agencies constructed by the governing elites.

Horton pushes on an open door when he notes that bureaucracies tend to be simultaneously self-aggrandizing and self-sustaining: information is classified (to a great extent) to cover-up errors, waste, incompetence and cronyism: it's a recognizable pattern that evidently has both social and structural underpinnings and may be unavoidable. To maintain equilibrium (or control, depending on your perspective), steps taken by one administration are rarely undone by its successor and pressure from all sides conspires to perpetuate the status quo and also to enhance it. In other words, "the fix" is in.

The author details the perfidious and insidious pattern, progression and methods the "lords" employ to accomplish these goals. These include reliance on "experts" who are not only versed in arcana but also beholden to special interests as well as their own careerist goals. Abolition of the military draft further divorced citizens from the consequences of executive actions overseas: otherwise stated, if your own life isn't on the line, who cares? Contrast the current situation with the "at risk" draft-age population of the Vietnam era and reactions then and now.

Most tellingly, Horton is able to elucidate all of this in a calm, balanced and fair fashion. Despite the conspiratorial echoes of the book's title, the author never resorts to this convenient and inane dodge to make his case. The book is as balanced and expert a presentation of these thought-provoking and contentious issues as could be most optimistically expected and optimism for a democratic resolution of these matters, one that would be recognizable to Athenian-era participatory democracy is, in Horton's opinion, not too likely an outcome...and it's likely to get a whole lot worse given the fear of the average voter and the rewards garnered by the elites.

Disappointing
By SK
This was extremely disappointing. What is worse is that Horton advocates for an informed citizenry that is given unmanipulated information. Yet, he manipulates his reader with poor logic, unsupported assertions, and false footnotes.

As a couple quick examples:

Page 98-99 he talks about the rise of the national security state with the National Security Act of 1947. After quoting the Act in regards to the definition of covert action, the need for a written finding, and the Congressional oversight, he asserts: "The national security state that came into existence in 1947 thus reflected deep concern about the unchecked spread of secrecy and a need to reconcile the pervasive secrecy that had existed during World War II with the needs of a democratic society." Except that it doesn't reflect any concern because he is using the amended Act for his quotations. The Sections 501 and 503 didn't exist in 1947.

On page 129 he writes about WikiLeaks (2010) and Snowden (2013). In the paragraph on Snowden he concludes: "The US government first argued that these leaks dangerously undermined national security and placed American service personnel and those supporting them at risk. Under challenge, however, US government officials were forced to step back from many of these claims." But his footnote does not refer to government officials in 2013/2014 but instead to an article by Elisabeth Bummiller, "Gates on Leaks, Wiki and Otherwise," from November 2010. At that time, Gates could not have been responding to the 2013 Snowden leak.

Some other random lines Horton throws in:

He distills the debate around the US use of nuclear weapons against Japan to simply using them in "anger." (Page 110)

On the next page he writes that because drones are armed and in the air they "logically would fall under the primary jurisdiction and control of the Air Force." Though every branch of the military has airborne weapons. So the logic that it is in the air and therefore under the jurisdiction of the Air Force doesn't make sense.

In several places he refers to how other countries' media report on all these issues. But Americans don't get to hear about them because we're shrouded from the truth due to secrecy. Yet, we have access to the news as reported in other countries if we want it.

On page 170 he calls out Congress for failing to have a mature debate on America's decisions to use force in Syria. Then on the following page, simplifies the matter to the use of force being controlled by the secret national security elite and Congress has no power over that.

Horton creates an argument that secrecy has been used to disenfranchise the American people from the decision making of its national security policy. But, almost every example he uses to support his case ends with someone making a "political" decision in one of the three branches of government. Unfortunately, Horton de-legitimizes a legitimate issue by employing similar manipulation of information for which he condemns the unidentified and undefined "national security elites" and "lords of secrecy." He wants you to accept and believe his argument at face value; just like our government asks us to believe in necessary secrets.

Let's have a real conversation on excessive secrecy. We should probably start with Congress having a public debate and maybe we should figure out why secrecy is used to protect the "political" appointees. We do still elect the politicians that make those appointments, right?

Review
"Project Pi is ON, Mr Krishnan". It is with this foreboding Project Piracy plan that Dr Kalyan C. Kankanala, an IP lawyer and the managing partner of Indian Intellectual Property firm BananaIP, begins his third work of  fiction  Pirates of Bollywood. This copyright law fiction has project piracy as its lodestar, and this book indeed has all the makings of (dare I say) a BollywoodMasala movie, albeit with the only difference that the author casts his mojo by interweaving the legal aspects of the copyright law debate within its theatrical setting of Bollywood in Mumbai...The protagonists of this story are Arjun. the famed IP lawyer, and Helen Joseph, the young, energetic and dynamic Assistant Commissioner of Police in Mumbai. The reader's attention would also be caught by the hapless character of Ilahi who is a teen selling pirated DVDs. The author manages to evoke the reader's sympathy for the likes of Ilahi as well as the assassin who commits cold-blooded murder in the story, by justifying their venality: the former is the only bread-winner for the family of six and the latter had a little sister suffering from spastic cerebral palsy, a physical disability due to brain damage...."Reviewed by Shalini, IP KAT: news.euoa.net/monday-miscellany-9-8642.html

A MESMERIZING LEGAL THRILLER ON UNCONVENTIONAL BACKGROUND
By JAYASREE ROY
One lady cop with unmatched power of detection, a young lawyer entirely passionate and dedicated to his profession and a management consultant determined to continue with a dangerous mission –form the plinth of this gripping legal thriller. Themed on multi billion dollar piracy racket of film and music industry of India, virtually a silent killer of the industry;-this wonderfully woven story tells in absorbing way the dirty sides of piracy thriving under the clout of so called freedom for expression and free will!
The assets of the fiction include its sheer unpredictability, twist at every juncture of the story and brilliant pace. No one can really have a guess that is behind the curtain and organizing the puppet show-directing the play of the puppets by the strings, until he or she reaches the last page.
The writer being a practitioner lawyer of intellectual property law himself has put tons of authentic material, which propels this unconventionally themed fiction throughout and in spite of presentation of such huge amount of information, reader can’t simply put it down.
Overall it is a very enjoyable read. However it is felt that the price is slightly in the upper bracket. And the love of coffee of the writer may prove to be infectious! But one thing is sure you simply can’t take a coffee break while enjoying the read-more addictive than caffeine!

very informative
By JK
The author explains a lot of legal concepts well, and I'm reminded of my law subjects back in college. The author sounds exactly like a legal Professor. I do wish it had a more exciting title though, as I do not think the title is interesting enough. I like how the author introduces the reader into the world of Bollywood and the problems of piracy. I agree that I would like to see more action than mere legal dialogues. There were times when I got the feeling that the dialogues were too 'high and formal', although I know this is to be expected from a legal thriller. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading book, it was very informative. (I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a non reciprocal review).

Of limited interest for most readers
By Gabriel Boutros
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal review.
While the author of Pirates of Bollywood is an expert in the field of intellectual property, in this novel he has the unenviable task of trying to make copyright law interesting to the average reader. Although he tries very hard, he does not succeed. In fact, part of the problem is that he maybe tries too hard, giving us reams of details about the problems with movie and music piracy in India, and, in a series of long courtroom scenes, page after page of debate for and against copyright law.
That’s really too bad, because when the author isn’t sounding the alarm against copyright infringement, he actually has a fairly compelling murder mystery somewhere in here. But instead of showing us detectives investigating a series of murders that may be linked to international film piracy, he instead gives us a series of scenes with lawyers, film producers and even a few pirates themselves, discussing how to enforce or avoid copyright law, with only the occasional reference to the murders. Maybe I’m wrong, but I tend to think that the average reader of crime novels would be more interested in cops trying to catch murderers than in lawsuits and injunctions, and this book just puts too much emphasis on the wrong crime.
That doesn’t make this a bad book by any means, but it is far from compelling or gripping , and is too interested in the technical minutiae of copyright law. While I appreciated the author’s knowledge of his subject, and I realize that this kind of piracy results in multi-million dollar losses, after a while I found myself skimming through the scenes where copyright was being discussed until I got to the murder investigation. Those pages put together would make for an average length short story.

The NYPD's First Fifty Years: Politicians, Police Commissioners, and Patrolmen, by Bernard Whalen, Jon Whalen

The New York Police Department is an iconic symbol of one of the world’s most famous cities. The blue uniforms of the men and women who serve on the force have long stood for integrity and heroism in the work to serve and protect the city’s residents. And yet, as in any large public organization, the NYPD has also suffered its share of corruption, political shenanigans, and questionable leadership.

In The NYPD’s First Fifty Years Bernard Whalen, himself a long-serving NYPD lieutenant, and his father, Jon, consider the men and women who have contributed to the department’s past, both positively and less so. Starting with the official formation of the NYPD in 1898, they examine the commissioners, politicians, and patrolmen who during the next fifty years left a lasting mark on history and on one another. In the process, they also explore the backroom dealings, the hidden history, and the relationships that set the scene for the modern NYPD that so proudly serves the city today.

A Scholarly Work
By HAL in NY
It's a decent read, loaded with verifiable factoids, covering the NYPD from the consolidation of the five boroughs in 1898 to 1948. A safe topic because all the players have passed on.

Frankly, this book was a bit of a disappointment. I found the writing to be somewhat stilted. The story is divided into what I will call eras, an era being essentially the tenure of a Police Commissioner. The transition from one era to the next is often non-existent and that is what I did not like. On the other hand, if you are interested in one era, you can pretty much flip to it and find everything in the book about that era in one place. There is very little "weaving" of the story line.

Perhaps I am looking for something that really does not exist. The continuity between succeeding mayoral terms, and hence PCs, frequently lacks continuity. Whatever it is, when switching eras, I often felt I was switching books. One thing that was not made clear is the relationship or lack of relationship between the author and Grover Whelan, a dominant figure in the 1930s and early 1940s.

Bernie Whalen and his father Jon did an awesome job with the history of early NYPD
By Billy
Bernie Whalen and his father Jon did an awesome job with the history of early NYPD. If you are a police 'buff', love NYC history or enjoy old politics this is a must read. The author's chronicle the New York City Police Department and the different mayor's involvement within the department. The rise and fall of Tammany Hall in NYC's politics and more.

"Things" are not better or worse; they are the same.
By JHM019
Lieutenant Bernard. and Jon Whalen did a great job describing the heart and soul of the NYPD during the fifty years after Consolidation. The organization of the story, grounded on the PC's of the period, provided an inside view of the wide variety of accomplishments and issues faced by the PD and the community during times of war, prosperity, and economic depression. Bernie's experience as a patrol officer and long time supervisor is evident in his masterful explanation of the workings of the greatest police department. It is a must read for anyone interested in policing and police supervision. The authors quote of Commissioner Valentine that, "You men will be supported by me.... if what you do is justified." rings as true today as it did in earlier days.
