KIRKUS REVIEWS "Workers' compensation lawyer Garofalo recounts his life and law practice in Chicago. Born on the North Side of Chicago in 1952, Garofalo grew up in a small, one-bathroom house. His grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all lived on the same small lot in the house in back. After Garofalo's draft number didn't come up during the Vietnam War, he finished school, married his childhood sweetheart, and graduated in 1977 from DePaul University School of Law. Afterward, Garofalo survived a brief stint in real estate law until discovering during a foreclosure that he possessed what few in his profession seem to have: a heart and a soul. He quit his job and found a position as an associate at the Chicago law firm of Gifford, Detuno and Gifford, Ltd., where he represented employers in workers' compensation cases. It was a life changing association in which he found a common bond among the members of a local bar association dominated by Italian-Americans and a field in which he excelled. Recalling his early life, Garofalo remembers his parents' divorce two years after their marriage and how his grandfather became his surrogate father. ... Garofalo uncovered his Italian roots, explored winemaking, traveled to Italy, and purchased a vineyard in California. It is an increasingly common practice to delve into our genealogical history in order to establish the connection between where we came from and who we became. In Chicago Law: A Trial Lawyer's Journey, a thoroughly detailed autobiography, Joe Garofalo, or "Joey Flowers" to those who know him well, tells his life story by intertwining his work experiences with the most influential people he has known in both his family and his law practice. ...
Chicago Law is peppered with anecdotes that have informed Garofalo's approach to life and molded his philosophy. In many ways he is an everyman --- struggling to find happiness and purpose in his work and meaning in his life, overcoming hurdles with a mixture of humor and perseverance. He details career and family milestones, teachable moments, and travel adventures in equal measure.
The central theme of the collection is gratitude; Garofalo's indebtedness to his family, friends, mentors and colleagues, and to the lifestyle his work has afforded him, is heavily emphasized and very endearing. Many may pause to consider the impact those who have touched our lives have had on our paths. ...
The book's format, which intersperses work tales and advice with family history, is unconventional. In some ways it feels like this volume could have been two books: one, a collection of wisdom and advice from a seasoned lawyer to those who may see him as a mentor; and the other a family history, a series of family portraits constructed through narrative essays about each branch of the family tree.
There are indeed touching moments throughout the story; Garofalo's frank relationship with his old boss "T.K.," especially as they help each other work through grief, is particularly poignant, as are his detailing of his most meaningful courtroom victory in the chapter "Defending Abraham" and his grief upon the loss of many important people along the way. ...

About the Author
Joseph A. Garofalo is a graduate of North Park College and DePaul University School of Law and a member of the American, Illinois State, and Chicago Bar Associations. He was admitted to practice law before the US District Court, Northern District of Illinois, including the Federal Trial Bar, and the US Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit. After working as an associate for seven years, he left to cofound his own firm, which is now called Garofalo, Schreiber & Storm, Chartered.
Garofalo’s career focus is workers’ compensation and employers’ liability, and he has extensive litigation experience before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission, the Circuit Court, the Appellate Court, and the Illinois Supreme Court. Additionally, he’s lectured on the topic before the Chicago Bar Association and a variety of business groups and insurance professionals.
Garofalo and his wife reside primarily in Park Ridge, Illinois, and part-time at Garofalo Family Vineyards in Healdsburg, California.

the trek is even more beautifully rendered as a metaphor

Joe Garofalo's autobiography takes the reader on a poignant and introspective journey. Through a series of vignettes, he conveys far more than the story of his life: from his humble roots in a struggling but loving family, to his academic achievements, to his primary profession as a trial lawyer and his avocation as a wine grower. As fascinating as that journey would be standing alone, the trek is even more beautifully rendered as a metaphor, gentle teaching the reader how to derive greater meaning from life. The tone of the book is replete with irony. The young man who did not feel called to the ministry ministers to us all by revealing what is most important to attaining true happiness: love of God and one's neighbor.

Joseph Garofalo's autobiography is a well written detailed account of the trial lawyer In Chicago,Il. Joe shows a side of a trial lawyer that most people cannot begin to understand. Joe, guides us through his successes and failures with great enthusiasm and energy. He takes us on journey from his humble roots to his rise to the top of the legal profession. Garofalo, shines a light on the day to day routine of all of us who are trial an exposes the good, bad, and the beautiful things about it. The average person's perception of what it means to be a lawyer will find that the glamour, power, success, and wealth are an illusion created by Hollywood and not real . Joe is the real deal. Joe puts on display the work ethic and integrity that have driven him to succeed in law, life and family. A TRIAL LAWYER'S JOURNEY should be required reading for everyone who wants to become a lawyer and those who are closely connected to a lawyer. Each will gain a valuable understanding what means to be a trial lawyer. Those of who have had the blessing knowing Joe owe a debt of gratitude , for setting the standard of what means to be a great trial lawyer.

What our society needs today is more people like Joe.

The autobiography of Joe Garofalo is so much more than a book about lawyers and the law career of Joe Garofalo, one the most highly respected workers' compensation attorneys in the State of Illinois. Joe's experiences in the field of law have provided him a platform to examine his own life including the people and experiences that have helped shape him into the person he is today. The book provides a psychological profile of my dear friend, Joe Garofalo. By learning about his family, we learn about Joe. Indeed, we are all shaped by our experiences growing up. Joe is a man of the highest ethics who has had a profound effect on the many people he has interacted with for more than 30 years as an attorney. We are all thankful to Joe for sharing his life experiences and outlook on life with us. What our society needs today is more people like Joe.
